  1. Who wants to delete who? I have you as a friend twice on my profile :D, presumably because we both added each other as friends

  2. While the phrase is powerful evidence, the fact that this is written is not proof that Honor is in the west, only that they percieve Honor to be in the west. The place where Urithiru is might be where the Heralds recieved their powers from Honor/Almighty, or where they were revealed to mankind, or even simply a really high place if they think he's in the sky. It is not necessarily physically close to Honor. Also, is it true that all Shards have a physical location for their power? The only ones I know of are Aona's (I haven't actually read Elantris, but its on the way) "Lake"(?) and the Well of Ascension. Aona is dead and Leras had used his power to trap Ruin. If Shardpools are not standard (Endowment doesn't have one we know of) and only form under special circumstances (i.e. death) then Honor did not necessarily have one when Urithiru is built. Since it seems the KR control it (from another epigraph) and BS has stated (I think) that Honor is alive at the time of the Oathpact's betrayal and the prologue clearly shows KR as existing then, I think it can fairly safely be assumed that Urithiru existed before (unless it's built afterwards and/or the KR take control afterwards). If both of the above statements are true then they would not build Urithiru on or near Honor's shardpool as it wouldn't exist. Not to mention the fact that knowledge of a God's power in such a form would surely raise questions considering the way he was apparently worshipped. Honor's Shardpool most probably exists, but I don't think it's where Urithiru is (unless the reason it can't be found is because his death was there and it wiped it off the map, but I think people would have noticed that) I really have to learn to stop sabotaging my own theories .
  3. I think BS has stated that Honor is still alive when the Oathpact is shattered, and Knights Radiant are already around before then. In the epilogue when we see this happening Kalak specifically mentions shardblades when he compares Honorblades to them. If BS has stated Honor is still alive then I don't think this can be true.
  4. Or he could give the Plate and Blade to Rock (Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor is an awesome name and a great password ) who goes back to his home and becomes King and a major ally (although I'm not sure whether or not Rock would actually take it and/or use it - he did after all refuse to fight before, do we know what happens to his master?) Also, can anyone tell me what page its mentioned that Kaladin has told Sigzil he's now a Worldsinger? I really can't remember it.
  5. I can't wait for the next book, so many burning questions . I really want to know if this theory is true. On another note, I wonder what the Ardentry's reaction will be if they find out (they will eventually) considering they consider Soulcasting to be holy and a thing only for Ardents. They can't force Elhokar into the Ardentry, he's a king and would likely react badly. Besides who would own him? . Also, I think you upvoted the wrong person OS, Featherwriter has it not Turos (not that I object to Featherwriter having it... perhaps I'll give her one just to avoid death ) EDIT: Looks like you got ninja'd too
  6. I may be a little confused but I thought Splinters were only formed when a Shard is Shattered, which presumably requires another Shard to do. If the Shard on the Silence Divine was Shattered there then how did the Splinter get to Roshar? If the Shard for some reason was shattered on Roshar then where are all the other Splinters? I like the theory though, you have to think outside the box when dealing with Brandon Sanderson .
  7. You know, if you're exiting a black hole I think its very appropiate that your age is unknown. Very mysterious :D.

  8. That still doesn't explain why her Memories didn't capture them before but do now. Also, what would trigger the nahel bond, assuming truthspren are from Honor whose power works through oaths and bonds then when did she vow anything? She went to Kharbranth to decieve Jasnah too. I think we just don't have enough information to decide yet. Speculation is good though .
  9. I sort of have a pet theory regarding Shardplate and Shardblades, when a potential Knight Radiant vows the Fifth Ideal of his order his Shardplate and Blade are formed from Stormlight and when they die it disappears. This accounts for the glow of the KR and the fact that their Shardplate didn't interfere with their Stormlight abilities as they do now. There was a link between each Knight Radiant and their Shardplate and Blade. However when the Radiants broke their Oaths and turned their back on mankind on the Day of Recreance this bond was broken, hence the loss of the glyphs and the glow. Its also possible Blades were able to change their form and this function was lost too. Problem: Why don't Plate and Blades disappear now? Possible Solution: They are no longer bonded to anyone and so are not destroyed when their bearer's die. If this little theory is true (even partially), I can't wait for Kaladin to say the Fifth Ideal .
  10. I like it. Does anyone know how long Shallan has been able to use her Memory ability? She seems to be used to it so it can't have been that recent. However, if truthspren are responsible then surely she would have noticed them before in one of her Memories and wouldn't be so shocked in WoK. I'm not sure what to think on this one .
  11. Peter's post now has 7 reputation points
  12. I was a Robert Jordan fan first, I randomly picked up The Eye of the World from my library and was hooked, this was when I was in secondary school (I'm not sure what that equates to in the US). I got my Librarian (non-orangutan) into it and we both started reading through them. Unfortunately the books just got too all-over-the-place for me and I was getting annoyed reading so many PoV that weren't particularly relevant (IMO). I also randomly picked up Mistborn: Final Empire in my library a few years later, which got me into Brandon Sanderson. To be honest it was only as I read through the first Mistborn trilogy that I slowly became aware of Brandon Sanderson, i tend to pay more attention to a book's name than its author . Also, my vote puts it at 64 votes RJ : 32 votes BS
  13. More of a saying than a one-liner (I assume you don't require them to be jokes?) but I quite like it. "Your words are like the thousand doves, easy to release, hard to keep."
  14. Hello Scattered! You deserve an upvote for that - you bookstore-lurking ninja!
  15. Thats the problem with reuniting all the Shards, Sazed was lucky in that two Shards became available at the same time that were exact opposites and therefore cancelled each others effect on his mind. He is still a free agent. If he added another Shard somehow it would upset the balance, I think it might require all Shards to be available at the same time for anyone to reunite them. On another note, I wonder if Sazed could take on Odium?
  16. Maybe Amaram will want to fight Kaladin so he can be sure the only person (other than his own advisors) who knows what he did dead - although I have a feeling his words will be as the thousand doves (I love that phrase ). We know he is subordinate to Sadeas, so perhaps when Dalinar enforces the Alethi Codes of War (which forbid duelling during times of war), Sadeas will maneuver somehow to get Amaram to duel Kaladin and force Dalinar to accept it, undermining Dalinar's position and emboldening his enemies. The fate of the Alethi Codes will literally lie in their hands... Also, I would like Kaladin to finally remember to tell Sigzil that Hoid has graduated him and he is now a full WorldSinger - although admittedly he did have a lot on his mind, what with almost dying and all . EDIT: Also, Kaladin may not go to help Elhokar, in fact he might not even know the significance of The Assassin in White and his link to Elhokar. On the other hand, he may by that time have become friends with Elhokar (it's possible) even if he isn't now, he will after all be in the Royal Guard - their purpose is to protect the King. Dalinar may also order him to do so, he certaintly wouldn't think Szeth was there for him.
  17. The strange flashes of light and the spire they come from (in the triangular city) that Kaladin sees when he rides the storm. EDIT: Never mind, a closer read shows that it is actually Szeth killing someone, the flashes are his Lashings presumably.
  18. Going back to Dalinar's (indirect) mention of inflation, I think Dalinar is not actually talking about the here and now. Emphasis mine, page 409 People have been talking about how the influx of gemhearts has been cancelled out by the fact of the highprinces' armies, and they are probably right, but to me he isn't talking about that. He's talking about after the armies have left, as he says its now a de facto Alethi province, so what happens after the Veangance Pact is won (or given up)? With the parshendi beaten or peaceful it will be a lot easier to get to the chasmfiends, and there will be no armies to cancel out the effects. It may take a while, but this after all is only Book 1 in 10, there's plenty of time left (although the upcoming Desolation may upset a few plans) Now I've said this, I really have no idea why .
  19. In the Second Interlude we see Axies the Collector record information about a giant spren called Cusicesh the Protector(whose name is annoyingly hard to remember). A short while after that... This made me think, what if he isn't the only member of his spren-type? Somewhere in WoK (I can't remember where) Syl says that all spren are part of the same thing (or words to that effect). What if all the members of Cusicesh's spren-type are in fact making up "Cusicesh"? They've just merged into one super-spren and this is what makes him so large. They could also be the origin of the different faces Axies sees, Syl after all has her own facial features. What does Axies feel afterwards then? In my opinion, spren need energy to maintain sentience - this could even be the origin of the nahel bond. This seems to be the case with Syl at least, Kaladin provides the energy for her to remain sentient and in return she provides access to the abilities of a Knight Radiant. Acting honorably allows the bond to form and remain, vowing the Ideals of a Knight Radiant widen the bind and allow more energy to pass each way. Maybe Cusicesh is draining people of energy to try and maintain the sentience of the collective mind. Since we don't know what type of spren he is we don't know what characteristics to look for, but "common" doesn't imply universality - not everyone who sees Cusicesh feel drained. Maybe it's curiosity? Since they aren't committed to the trait he can't drain much, and there are so many spren he can barely maintain sentience at all. As to why he's looking at the Origin, it depends on what exactly the Origin is. I toyed with the idea that it was Honor's power - similar to the Well of Ascension for Preservation - but then why wouldn't Odium Splinter Honor considering he showed no compunction about doing so with Aona and Skai? Maybe it's the place where Odium killed Honor - I don't know. I know this is all speculation, I just wanted to get my ideas out there before I burst . EDIT: I found the quote I was looking for . On page 808, Syl says: "I'm... taking something from you. and giving something in return.". this supports my view on the nahel bond I think.
  20. While I would like to see Kaladin fight and win against Amaram, I'm not sure that it will happen. For oen thing assuming Dalinar's plan succeeds and he enforces the Alethi Codes of War on the entire army then it will actually be against the codes for them to duel. Also I feel it would be detrimental to Kaladin as he would be giving in to his hate for Amaran, unless they somehow fight and Kaladin has him at his mercy and spares him I suppose. I also have the sneaking suspicion that Amaram isn't really as bad as Kaladin thinks he is, or maybe he's the best of a bad lot. He does after all seem to feel uncomfortable when Tien is nominated to go to war, and I don't think he was comfortable with what he did to Kaladin either - he sounded like he was trying to convince himself that it was right. It's entirely possible he's been feeling guilty since he betrayed kaladin. Then again, it's entirely possible he hasn't . Also, I hope Elhokar isn't there when Szeth appears to kill Dalinar (whenever that is) as it's quite likely everyone will rush to protect Elhokar (including Kaladin probably) as they assume that's who he's after - leaving Dalinar open.
  21. This seems to be the place for Keteks, so i thought I'd post my feeble attempts here On the Knights Radiant: Knights Radiant - brightly shine - Honor - shines brighter - radiant Knight On Shallan: Nature changes - truth binds - Shallan - binds truth - changing Nature This is what comes of being unable to get to sleep .
  22. From what I've read of this (very long) thread Oaths can't be the focus as if they were Kaladin would have to make an oath every time he used his Windrunning abilities. Not the enhanced speed and strength as this just seems to be an effect of having stormlight inside him. The other Windrunning abilities however, the Basic, Full and Reverse lashings would require this. Yet it is quite evident in the book that he doesn't need to. This is my understanding of the term "focus" anyway - it's quite possible I'm wrong . EDIT: Also, if focii determine what power is used then how exactly would Oaths perform this function? Why would a specific oath activate a certain power?
  23. Is it Wisdom to know that you are not wise? On reflection that actually seems like a fairly deep philosophical question, although I could be mistaken - it would not be the first time. This, obviously, will not do - I cannot call myself Wisdom if I actually am wise. Then again I suppose it would have been wise to refrain from callling myself Wisdom and avoid this whole problem, so Wisdom is the only possible name I can have. Right? As to why I actually called myself Wisdom, it's partly because I am eagerly hoping for a Shard called Wisdom and partly because it's a trait I seek to emulate - without much succes admittedly. Also, thank you for the cookie
  24. I don't think there were any more Desolations after breaking of the Oathpact. If you look at this it lists the Last Desolation as the defeat of the Voidbringers (although I'm not sure what Aharietiam refers to). It also lists the Day of Recreance and The Heirocracy, so it has to have happened afterwards. If there were more Desolations, why then would they still list it as the Last Desolation?
  25. I know this topic may be fairly old but I thought I might point out something that I believe supports the idea that The Stormlight Archive is in some sense a historical document - in short, the annotations to the sketches included in the book (which can also be found here) These annotations (on the spearman's map of Sadeas' warcamp, Navani's Battle of the Tower sketch, Vandonas' map of the Alethi warcamps and the map of Alethkar) make them seem like historical sources included with the actual text for completeness, especially the dates. My idea of the Stormlight Archive is not as a historical document itself (as in it is written in the future about the events we read about) but more of a collection of contemporary documents (or near contemporary) detailing the events surrounding the True Desolation (as I believe it is referred to). People from the future have copies of all the books and have grouped them together and called them The Stormlight Archive as well as including relevant documents they have found (i.e. the pictures). The books are more historical sources, in the same way that anyone studying the end of the Roman Republic might read Cicero's Philippics or the Res Gestae Divi Augusti (Deed's of the Divine Augustus). I may, of course, be reading too much into it. I shall just have to wait for more books to come along. Oh well EDIT: I'd also like to tentatively suggest Kalami, Teleb's wife as the author - taking into account that this is only the first book of ten and a better candidate may come up in the later ones. It says on page 370 that she's a historian "of note" and plans to write a history of the war which is why she is sitting in on meetings. Assuming my theory is true of course . EDIT^2: Or, as Odium Shard suggested, it could be the group Jasnah is part of - although I can't remember their name I can remember that they are supposedly dedicated to a true and unbiased account of history. On the other hand, they might be focusing on their history rather than contemporary events. Also I haven't heard of anyone who belongs to the same order/organisation asking questions. As for the Ghostbloods, I somehow think they wouldn't give a balanced account - then again we don't really know who or what they are so its possible. Wow this has gotten long.
