If you were a surgebinder with 2 spren...
WhiteLeeopard replied to Watchcry's topic in Stormlight Archive
Edgedancers, Remembering the forgotten: not logical, why focus on the small when the big is in play Windrunners, protect: sometimes there are bigger goals than protecting the minor people Skybreakers, the law: laws are not always logical, specially in Roshar Stonewards, standing your ground: ehhh, definitely not logical, if retreat is the best option, then retreat Lightweavers, honest and truths: probably the easiest one to accept for Elsecallers, although not sure they will have the disposition to cheer up others' morale Bondsmiths, uniting: probably too honest, assasins and hidden deals may not be doable for Bondsmiths Don't really know enough about the others to say. Skybreakers may be compatible with Bondsmiths, Stonewards and Lightweavers. Granted, not easily, but combining 2 orders is never going to be a walk in the park. -
What is Darkness Doing Now?

The saddest thing is that I can't really blame the Heralds for that choice. Duty can lead people to do impressive sacrifices. But hope is the last thing that is lost, and without hope or any sense of achievement sacrifice is ultimately too unpalatable to keep doing it. Hope is the first thing the Heralds lost, and the only thing they gained after each Desolation was time. There was no end, there was no win, just delay after delay. As we briefly saw in the Wheel of Time, there comes a time when no reward and no sense of achievement, means either giving up or turning to the Dark Side. If anything, the fact that the Heralds just walked away instead of just turning to Odium out of resentment for Honor shows they were truly impressive men and women. (Of course this last is not certain). I suspect even Dalinar will be a bit overawed by the Heralds at first. And I can still see some Heralds refusing to fight no matter what. But maybe some can be brought back partly into the fold. -

I'm not 100% sure on it, maybe Calderis or Extensian can find the WoB. Far as I remember Era 2 happens between SA 1 and SA 2. I don't think time will go "backwards" as its one of the things Brandon said he wouldn't do.- 51 replies

What is Darkness Doing Now?
WhiteLeeopard replied to Faceless Mist-Wraith's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thats...quite likely. But between running around doing their heraldic duties (which has a high probability of death) and lounging in a bar (low probability of death) why go with option one if they do not under any circumstances want to return to Braize? -
Off the top of my head, the only disaster in our world that totally killed everyone in a city is Pompei. Even then some escaped in boats, but since there is no sea here lets ignore that. Which disaster could we put on par of a fiery volcano to destroy the plains and kill absolutely everyone alive while simultaneusly not breaking the buildings?

Although I will admit we don't know what a full Herald could do, I'm not convinced they were the absolute powers on the Cosmere. (Other than Shards obviously). Close to it certainly, but not necesarily ultimate.- 51 replies

I know there was a city there once and the ruins remain. But its strange that the door to the SP was left open, that whichever nation lived there was wiped out/completely relocated, and that the old city wasn't built over as happened everywhere else. Of course your point that maybe the plains were shattered before the KR disbanded is an option. Thing is, people tend to build on top of what was once there. When archeologists found Troy, they discovered there had been 7 cities there on top of each other, when one fell or was destroyed they built the new one on top. This is partly because its easier to build where there is already something, which is the reason why I assume all the other oathgate cities are still thriving metropolis. But why leave a good and large city so abruptly, its very very hard for people to completely leave the place where they live. Although something shattered the plains, why not return afterwards to rebuild (even if they now need to put a lot of bridges everywhere ).

There is another option I haven't seen mentioned, although I've been a bit out of touch What if the copycat killing is part of the protection itself? No Shard is innately good, and we often tend to assume Honor: good, Odium: bad. Therefore anything bad must be from Odium, anything good from Honor or Cultivation. In the oldest texts in our world there is the saying, a hand for a hand, an eye for an eye. In a twisted way this is considered the ultimate honorable way to act. What if Urithiru was made so that the ultimate crime (murder) was punished with an identical crime? This would mean that anyone in Urithiru would scrupulously follow the law (no murder) as for any killing you do you yourself could end up dead. And if anyone broke the law it would make the Skybreakers hunt down the culprit very assidiously knowing there would soon be another death.

I suspect that won't be achieved anytime soon. 1. Spren are wary of trusting the Radiants, specially those more of Honor. The few spren a bit more organized in the bonding are from Cultivation (or so it seems). 2. Superstition everywhere, often making not very good candidates 3. Proto-radiants have no clue what to do, what is going on, or where to go for guidance. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if spren start eventually mass bonding only for 90% of the proto-radiants to get stuck at oath 1 or 2. 4. Secret societies everywhere muddying the waters Darn, I really love lists don't I .

Wonder what there was on the Shattered Plains to deserve an Oathgate. Everywhere else there are remains of the old cities, even if they built entirely on top of them, the other Oathgates are on currently important cities. Yet not only was the SP completely barren and empty, but it was the only door left open. Makes one consider if what shattered the plains is related to the Recreance. Herdaz and the Horneater peaks are suspiciously empty of nearby Oathgates. Maybe the Herdazian and Horneaters only "came to be" after the last Desolation. The island may not seem a logical spot, but its very reasonable for an entire seafaring group. Reshi is mainly made of islands and people more at home on the sea than at land. An island, maybe their capital at the time would be the perfect spot for them to reach easily. I also see a lot of people saying it makes no sense the Reshi have 2 Oathgates. While honestly, what I thought when I saw it is that it is a wonder the current kingdoms are so similar to the 10 Silver Kingdoms and don't have even more shifted borders. Its been thousands of years, all that time ago for us we had Egypt and Babylon in their full glory, or even their predecesors . Since then maps have changed...a lot.

At this point in SA Wax should still be in the Roughs, or maybe still at home as a teenager. Unless Brandon gave a new WoB on the timeline between SA and Era 2 Mistborn.- 51 replies

From what we have seen so far I suspect Edgedancers are some of the most compatible with other orders (based purely on feasibility of oaths). While Elsecaller probably the hardest. I do wonder if we will see a KR with 2 spren at some point. In any case, if this happens it will likely not be on first SA half. -
What is Darkness Doing Now?

I agree Nale is at the top of my list of Heralds that I see doing something sort of Heraldic, albeit not at the scale as before. Followed by Shallash. But I really don't expect that to happen among all the Heralds. I also kind of feel Shinovar is Szeth's area, and Szeth may need some alone time with Nightblood to figure out how to bond him and to advance with Nightblood. I think we all are curious as to how that will happen . But I guess Nale could go with Szeth part of the way. -

Hope you don't mind me commenting on a 10 day old post, haven't been much on Shard for a couple of weeks. As much as I'd love to see Kelsier be Tezim it has two very large issues. Kelsier has a way of taking over things, and as large as his character might become it would challange SA standalone status. Secondly, Secret History- 51 replies

What is Darkness Doing Now?
WhiteLeeopard replied to Faceless Mist-Wraith's topic in Stormlight Archive
I am not convinced whenever people give the theory that the Heralds will return to do their duty. Why should they? 1. They are bonkers 2. They walked away knowing perfectly well what their actions entailed 3. They spent millenia fighting an endless war until they were too broken to keep fighting. They are at least as broken now as they were then. 4. If they take up their Honorblades again there may be a chance of reviving the Oathpact, and having to endure again the eternal fight, die, torture, fight cycle again. Which is what they walked away from in the first place. Once again, why should they Granted, it does seem some Heralds will reappear in some form or another. But I really do not believe that they will return to perform the same role as they once did. Even if a few do play a bastardized role of their original purpose I somehow doubt they all will. The heralds just have too much baggage. Both realmatic and psychological. You take the most honorable people you can find on our world and try to make them go through a cycle like the heralds and you'd likely be lucky if they didn't all become psycopaths. Add in whatever Cosmere related thing is going on with them and Roshar is screwed when it comes to Heralds been useful. -
On the very mid, right on top of the Valley. The dot in the middle of the mountains on top of Marat, right of Emul and left of Tu Fallia.
-
If they can make physical contact that would lead to the two of them fighting for a year or three.
-
I'm not entirely certain that T even knows himself the endgame of his own Diagram. I wouldn't be surprised if part of what they are still deciphering is what to do once T is king of Roshar. I also wouldn't be surprised if they have another sucessor after T in case he dies. After all the possibility of Szeth returning after him for revenge was included in the Diagram. But I can't say with certainty, the Diagram is very confusing to try to grasp. I think its a cultural thing. The Thrill was mainly in Alethkar, but I think we might have seen that there was also a bit on Jah Keved. Don't quote me on that though, as I'm not certain . Its quite likely the Unmade which causes the Thrill resided in Alethkar, this made the Alethi more bloodthirsty warriors, which started legends of how the Thrill was a gift from the Almighty (irony hello).

Technically Hate cannot exist without living beings to hate each other, . So yielding to Odium might create a society of hate, lack of trust, lack of law etc but I do not believe it would completely wipe out humanity. Odium isn't Ruin.
-
For all we know T wants to unite the world to then unilaterally yield to Odium. I'm not saying I believe this, but we really have no idea on the Diagram's endgame.
-
Ok, that was the best part...but then it ended!!! I'm worried he will now start forgetting Navani, as for some reason the idea that stormlight healed him doesn't really click. As it would imply the Nightwatcher "injures" you.

Not having read the comments yet: Dalinar's chapter was the most boring. Still going nowhere, probably will promise Adolin's plate next time. The best part of it was that at least he defined his own position with the church. And used his surgebinding for the real first time. Adhesion? I'm hoping that his sparring while having the chat with the Iri is a sign that he will realize that whatever he has to do, he is not a politician and will never be. Politicking really bores me at this point. Kaladin. Fun, but predictable. Voidspren, feeling sorry for the parshmen, and starts taking over the group/gaining their confidence. Most interesting tidbit was the knowledge that he couldn't see the Voidspren, I had expected KR to be able to do so. Shallan. Best chapter of the week. Shallan making mistakes and getting drunk was adorable. Unfortunately I got the impression she is unravelling fast. I think from what we've seen of our Radiants, they are so broken that if it weren't for their spren to act as their confidantes they would be staring hollow-eyed at a wall all day. Even Kaladin who is quite balanced at the moment, and he still panicked when he thought Syl had regressed again. Although maybe this perspective is just colored by Kaladin and Shallan been our main Radiants, and they both have huge issues. I see the Ghostbloods are as big a power as expected among the underworld. And the double murders...Maybe there is merit to the suggestion floated somewhere that there is a spren or Unmade in Urithiru making identical follow-up murders. Oh, and Pattern is also disturbed a bit by the personas Shallan crafts, so maybe Lightweavers did not do it the same way.

I wonder what Brandon would say if he found out those were the conclusions the insane people at the asylum, I mean the 17th Shard!, had reached.

You wouldn't know that from the discussions here ^^.
