[OB] Full Book Reactions / Full Spoilers Thread
CaptainRyan replied to Chaos's topic in Stormlight Archive
This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules. (jk) -
I'm about to head out so I don't have time to hunt it down (my wife just literally said "You ready?") but I believe there is a WoB saying that 99 is grossly exaggerated. I was trying to confirm/deny a theory @Steeldancer was working on and that I liked. Edit: She went to the bathroom. Here is the link to the WoB: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/97-idaho-falls-signing/#e2728

I think the "threw" is saying they "activated" or "moved" the switch. They did not pass through a switch, which is what your version would mean. She is slipping a hook between two stones and "activating" a hidden switch.

Karen Ahlstrom has. We have this chronology on the coppermind. We also have a timeline complied by @Oversleep here. Unfortunately, I was unable to find anything that covers the minutiae you are looking for. Perhaps you could make it?

How long will release signings be sustainable?
CaptainRyan replied to SOM1else's topic in Events and Signings
This is a possibility but I still don't think they will do this for a number of reasons. 1. Team Sanderson keeps developing smart tricks to handle larger crowds; e.g. pre-signing/numbering books so that those who aren't keen on asking questions can just leave. 2. Sanderson loves his fans and will probably refuse to cancel the signings. Another thing to remember is that the Wheel of Time probably had larger events but Brandon still handled those. I doubt we have reached "critical capacity" yet. -

Interesting theory but I think, barring further evidence, that I disagree. None of the evidence listed (Uruthiru having a ton of fabrial-tech, the gem pillar being big enough to contain a large Splinter, etc.) specifically points to the Nightwatcher. I think we would jump to that conclusion because she is the only other super spren we know. There is, however, a possibility, of at least one more (the Sibling).

Nice catch! I'm not sure why they did that.

[OB] Full Book Reactions / Full Spoilers Thread
CaptainRyan replied to Chaos's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, it was worth the wait and lived up to the hype for sure. So much to cover, both in reactions and in this thread already. I have read everyone's responses btw. First, reaction: Fantastic book. Tons of new info that should keep up theorizing for a long, long time. So many amazing moments, scenes, and events. I literally read non-stop from 12:30am Tuesday to 8:30pm Tuesday. I ate one, small, meal during that time and read while I ate haha. Out of everything that happened I have to admit that the thing that stuck most with me, initially, is Jasnah Kholin being an unstoppable force of destruction. She was amazing in the battle of Thaylen City. Just amazing. I was shocked but not shocked at Elhokar's death. Someone had to really die this book and while my money was on Dalinar, Elhokar makes sense. Brandon pushed all the right buttons in making Elhokar more likable before delivering the final blow. I was truly shocked that Eshonai was dead. I assumed she survived the fall (she did) but then drowning in the chasm... so storming sad. I am not 100% sold on Venli as a good enough replacement story-wise for Eshonai but I am willing to let that part play out before I render final judgement. I wanted more from the "Adolin killed Sadeas" storyline. A lot more. That was such an unexpected, and powerful, moment in Words of Radiance and it felt super ignored in this book. Alas. Ugh, so much more. I cannot even put it into words. I will be for sure joining many of the threads that I can feel coming haha Second, thread responses: I've seen a lot of people saying that what caused the Recreance is learning that human's are the real "Voidbringers". I thought it was more focused on the fact that Surgebinding is what destroyed the first homeworld of the/these humans combined with the fact that humans were historical aggressors. For Radiants fighting a Desolation that fact (destroy world) might be a bit less relevant but for the Radiants who lived during an era where they assumed the Desolations were over... well, they might have thought "Sheesh, if we keep Surgebinding we are going to destroy the world" and decide to give up their powers in such a way as to dissuade the spren from making them again. I completely agree with @yulerule that we are missing a scene where everyone says "What is the storming Assassin in White doing here"? I also agree with @Steeldancer that there are going to be some big set backs in book 4. Book 5 is going to need some decent set-up haha. The loss of Kholinar surprised me though. Pretty unexpected. @Kk- you said "I assume that Uli Da was the shard Rayse had killed who we didn't know." earlier in the thread. I assumed that Uli Da was the name of Ambition's Vessel. You also said "Has Fortune been mentioned before? I vaguely remember it as something I wondered about after reading a previous book, but cannot place which." and I think you are thinking of [Mistborn spoilers ahead]... @Bridge Boy you mentioned "I'd hate the storyline where one of them saves her from her personal issues. Those are her issues, they cannot have them; she needs to save herself." earlier. I think people can help someone with these kind of issues. While the individual (Shallan) needs to be working towards a resolution in order to "get better", she can also, in my opinion, realistically receive a lot of help from other people. Having someone to confide in and support you (see Navani helping Dalinar when he had his breakdown) can be super helpful. Now, of course, Brandon would have to handle Adolin helping Shallan in a good way but I don't think Shallan needs to solo these issues. @Pattern, you said "If Dalinar indeed ascended, he is Unity now. Odium seems to recognize him as Honor "We have killed you", but I think Dalinars Intent differs from Honor." and I don't quite agree. The Intents of the Shards, as far as I am aware, are set. Now, if Dalinar is a powerful splinter of Honor (which I think is what he has become) then Dalinar can do quite a bit more in terms of "Intent".- 807 replies

I recorded these WoBs in my Google doc during the VIP Q&A. I know more were asked but these are the ones I wrote down: I also asked three questions during the main signing. I confirmed that there have not been nine (9) Desolations. @Steeldancer, you might find that interesting. I also learned that Odium's main focus is on killing the other Shards but he does have a secondary interest in mortals. Finally, I learned that a Shard cannot "cut off" a magic user from their magic but could interfere in other ways. Pics below.

You're welcome! Glad you found a wristband! My understanding, which may be flawed, is that the BYU bookstore will have some # of books available for purchase but without a pre-order it is a gamble. I would suggest calling the BYU bookstore today and asking them if you can pick one up today and then take it over to the release party. Otherwise, I'm not sure what your options are.
-
I have an extra wristband from standing in line for the low numbers. I'm going to the VIP event so I don't need it. Do you want mine? Unfortunately, I only have 1.

You can ask for a "personalization" for your book if you go through the line. This can be a question that he writes the answer to in your book, it can be a doodle, or, really, almost anything that is quick to do. As for how many questions you can ask him directly, it depends. If you ask yes/no questions, you can usually ask a 2-3. If you ask an open ended question that he takes time to answer then it might only be 1. I'd say have 3-4 prepared but order them by "most important" in case you can't ask all of them.

[OB] A Theory on Odium's champion
CaptainRyan replied to Staphylococcus's topic in Stormlight Archive
I guess we might just see Odium's goals/motivations a bit differently. I don't think Odium cares one bit about the people of Roshar. I wonder if he even notices "mortals" anymore. My thought is not that Odium is sympathetic to humanoids but that he a] does not care about them and b] is 100% focused on taking down the other Shards and is not going to waste a single moment attacking mortals when he needs to be focused on taking out the new big, bad double Shard.- 34 replies

A few questions about Allomantic Metals. Spoilers: All
CaptainRyan replied to WalterWhiteVevo's topic in Mistborn
Hi WalterWhiteVevo, welcome! Great questions! I will do my best to answer them. This is a good question! Bravo to you for noticing the discrepancy here. Brandon has said that Preservation intentionally modified the Metallic Arts to include Atium and Malatium and to remove two other metals. See this link to Arcanum, the new repository for all of our collective knowledge: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/35-arcanum-unbounded-hoboken-signing/#e2524 Note, I searched "preservation+atium" to find this. It used to be possible to have a malatium misting but it no longer seems to be. Here is the Arcanum link where I searched "malatium+misting": https://wob.coppermind.net/events/165-steelheart-san-francisco-signing/#e3000 Indeed it is! Here is a WoB (word of Brandon) from Arcanum. I searched "lerasium+alloy" to find this one: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/9-calamity-philadelphia-signing/#e7624 There ya go! I think that covers it, eh? Be sure to check out Arcanum. It has a ton of info. Just be careful as it also has spoilers for all of the Cosmere books so if you have not read all of them yet tread carefully. -
Gah! Of course I didn't try "shallan+bi" but I tried myriad combinations of bisexual, bi-sexual, and gay. Ugh. I need to level up my Arcanum-fu.

I disagree with this statement. Brandon has explicitly said that the MAG is not canon and that the people who make the game are the ones who decide what the powers do. It is not a guide any more than if I wrote up a bunch of rules for how Chromium works. See this section in Arcanum: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/179-mistborn-secret-history-explanation/#e3734

It might be worth considering scenarios as opposed to using a general term like "combat". Gold/gold is very, very good at 1v1 fighting but gets increasingly less useful as the odds are stacked against you. A gold compounder is only marginally better at 1v100 than a normal person but a Steel or Atium compounder still has a huge advantage. A Steel compounder in a nuts/bolts factory is very different than a Steel compounder in a forest and that is very different than fighting on top of a thinly frozen lake. Speaking of a frozen lake, a brass twinborn fighting an atium twinborn on a glacier can probably just run away and stay warm and let the atium twinborn die of exposure haha! Also, out of curiosity, what do you expect from a Chromium twinborn?
-
If an unexpected attack that happens so quickly you cannot react to it is what you are worried about then is not Steel compounding the most powerful? An atium compounder would need to be continually burning Allomantic atium to avoid the ambush (assuming a normal speed individual, even with the foresight granted by atium, could not be "checkmated" by a Steel compounder). As far as I am aware, we are unsure of how Feruchemical Chromium works so I would hesitate to put any sort of weight behind descriptions of its use. Honestly, Steel compounding in particular, and feruchemical compounding via allomancy in general, is one of my least favorite additions to the Mistborn trilogy. It is, in my tiny opinion, far too powerful and breaks an otherwise beautiful magic system (feruchemy).

Anyone care to explain the magic or "Investiture" here?
CaptainRyan replied to Quickbronze's question in Cosmere Q&A
There is a long running joke (and I use joke loosely here) on the forums to offer new members a hemalurgically spiked cookie because... reasons I guess. There is no actual connection between this overly repeated joke and anything in the Cosmere. -
How to contact Brandon - form failed
CaptainRyan replied to ai83's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Did you try re-sending (filling out the form again)? -
Came here to say this but saw Calderis already did. Elsecallers could, as best we know, have FMA-esque (to an extent) fights with the proper amount of Stormlight. I mean, check out the cover of Oathbringer for goodness sake! Jasnah is building a friggin' wall haha
