1. Vasher was described as intuitively gifted at fighting. Hes never deacribed as an allstar swprdsmen but he always makes the right move to win. Kind of like a crafty vet vs a prodigy who only knows bookforms. Hence how he is able to beat "better duelists". When training Kaladin it is not his strength or speed but his descisions that make him deadly. Also Zahel mentions and is cut off before completing a thought about Dalinar. He says " he is the most powerful human on the Planet" so hes here to influnce events through kholins most likely
2. When Kaladin gets Syl back “Shouting. Kaladin heard it now, as if it were closer. He is mine! a feminine voice said. I claim him" Something about that really resonated with me. Also the scene where Kaladin and Shallan return and Dalinar asks him "Is it you i have been searching for all along?" Then Kal replies "No, maybe once but noy anymore
3. I just finished Tigana and am moving on to Promise of Blood myself. Tigana is pretty shallow in its explanation of magics and such but it was a cool story. I enjoyed the Dianora storyline in a bizarre way. Saw an interview with Promise of Blood author Brian McClellan and Brandon on youtube so deciding to give it a shot.
4. Parshmen? Kalads phantoms?
5. When Vin is learning from the individual crew members about the Allomantic powers Spooks tip to her is that tin is about what you don't focus on more than what you do. Even when using one supersense you have to block out 80% of the background noise to focus on what you actually want to hear.
6. +1 sir On another note I would really like to see Mat's medallion art... I actually came up with a tattoo design before I even read the WoT about a fox with YinYang eyes (hence the name FormlessFox) coming from Taoism/TheArtofWar (formlessness) and foxes in zen culture (being crafty and what not). So when I saw it in WoT it blew my mind
7. The prologue scene where they view the scene of the battle with the burning rocks or the recreance flashback scene. Also the throne room in Uriteau with the 10 thrones for the ten kingdoms (not sure if there is enough detail)
8. I was wondering is there any rules regarding formatting when writing that a true amateur should know/follow? I feel like the way my writing looks is off. How do I represent dialogue etc etc? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
9. There is a Brandon Sanderson lecture series on youtube and there is this pdf http://www.writeaboutdragons.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/sanderson-intro-scifi-fantasy-2012.pdf which has the notes from previous lectures. I just found this info myself so not an expert at all but you need to put aside 10-20 minutes each day and just write. Brandon wrote like 5 books that he said were horrible before writing one good one. The reason was he was not a good enough writer yet to tell the stories. Read books that engage you... whatever floats your boat. Some of my suggestions: 1. Mistborn - amazing characters and worldbuilding 2. Wheel of Time - the most epic of epic fantasies (very long) 3. Anythign else by Brandon (Elantris, Warbreaker, stormlight etc) 4. Death Gate Cycle - pretty long but really cool world building. Think Lord of the Rings meets Interstellar 5. Tigana - almost done with it now really good standalone work 6. Shadow Campaign series - Flintlock fantasy by Django Wexler 7. Name of the Wind - universal favorite by readers and authors alike 8. Blood song - fun and entertaining trilogy 9. Promise of Blood - have not read this one but Brandon recommended it You do not need to read all of these or any of them but try to read the synopsis and see which ones fit your style. I would highly recommend Mistborn because it is only three books and it has a lot of worldbuilding and strong characters. I have never written a novel but personally I get bogged down in the planning/outlining stage. You need to put words on paper. Put aside time every day and just write write write. Write the story you want to read. Maybe begin with a Novella or short story? Good luck and don't convince yourself you have to do this or that before writing... just write and go from there. There is a lot of info from Brandon's own mouth about building characters but if you don't right it isn't worth a thing.
10. At what point does Brandon say the "man who calls himself Taln"? Is it simply that it was a RAFO that the man who calls himself Taln is a herald and that fact had not been revealed yet? We could easily refer to Hoid as the man who calls himself Hoid. Hoid is not his real name as we know but that doesn't change who he is. We just know him as Hoid... hence the man who calls himself Hoid. Maybe reading too much into it?
11. It could also have to do with the murder Wayne committed in his past and how it tears him up.
12. It exists... In my dreams. Make it happen pleaseeee
13. Csuischtch the protector? Sorry on spelling lol
14. Right, i was thinking rotspren into gloryspren like Syl is wind to honor connection i mentioned that in an earlier post sorry for not reposting. As far as it being diagramesque i guess i didn't define the parameters well enough. I meant more along the lines of evil in its destructive forms whereas skybreakers enforce social mores that men have created. I feel like there has to be some sort of check/balance of granting a radiant the power of death and decay. Just as kaladin must protect no matter how weak or how much he disagrees with the person maybe a dustbringer has to fight evil no matter how powerful. Bravery brings hope and they are a beacon in the night Just my hopeful take on the order.
15. I wonder if there is a situation where a sliver of Odium can be used as a hemulargic spike
16. Was thinking on the possible spren and since the second surge for Releasors is death/decay perhaps it is a rot spren. I am not sure if it is confirmed if rotspren cause rot or are just attracted to it. I am going to go with the attraction theory. If that is the case it would be a nice match for someone who had a very destructive power. Rotspren can detect corruption and foulness (evil) making it easier for the Releasor to identify people that deserve to be released from existence. Maybe it is a corrupt king or a simple thief but it would be very cool if there was a vindictive spren guiding the bad boys of destruction. This may be similar to the functions of skybreaker's justicespren but the difference may be that justice is connected to the pride of the person enforcing the justice. Skybreakers were known to have a near divine skill for separating the good from the evil but as we know that is a matter of who does the deciding. Whereas the rotspren is just simply identifying a condition because its necessary of keeping order tying in with the Dustbringer second trait of being obedient. The difference being a justicespren may say "Amaran has done wrong and deserves to be killed" as opposed to a rotspren's conclusion of "Amaran is bad for Roshar. He has to go". That could be a big personality distinction between skybreakers and releasors. I am kind of trying to steer Dustbringers to the character arc I want but will probably be so far off and glad Brandon came up with a better idea.
17. Horneater Peaks? Shadesmar?
18. Was watching an interview with Brandon and he recommended Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. Standalone fantasy novel. I am a little more than halfway through and it is great!
19. I thought Kaladin lashed himself to a shardbearer when he helped Adolin in the duel but when I looked back he only lashed in the direction of the person. Every other instance I thought ofand looked up was the same thing. Otherwise you would be able to lock on to opponents and it would be a bit overpowered as a stormlight seeking windrunner missile
20. That we have seen yes but we have seen very little of the original radiants in action or true living spren shardblades. Syl conformed to Kaladins thoughts of what he wanted shield, spear etc. and she never mentions it feels new so I am assuming it can be done but there isnt enough info to be sure. Pattern also naturally shortens his blade for Shallan so I am assuming they all can with a living spren blade.
21. The spren were imitating the honorblades like pulse said and when they died they were swords so thats how they stayed. Also in one of Talns ramblings he talks about how the heralds taught humans to soulcast and make weapons of bronze. If the heralds had swords the humans did their best to emulate them.
22. damnation gloryspren around my head gave it away! edit: I cannot write d.a.m.n.? it autocorrects to damnation lol?
23. Well I wonder if Sazed's newcomer status as a shardholder is important to the overall cosmere resolution. Sazed is such an interesting perspective because we have seen so much character development from him. I like having a "friend" sitting at the shardholder table it makes me feel more invested in the cosmere because Sazed is the legacy of a story I'm very attached to. Then again maybe Brandon turns that on its head and all the trust I have for Sazed will be for naught.
24. Interesting. Harmony can be defined as orderly so maybe it does not have to be altruistic. Maybe Sazeds final conclusion is that there is no harmony in the cosmere and conflict is the only natural harmony.
