  1. Many of them like to claim it's this, but I find it's always accompanied by other opinions that show their true colors.
  2. Ohhhhh yeah. Network. People thought it was ridiculous and outlandish in the 70s. Now it seems to be describing the 2000s very well.
  3. Nope. The UK just did a duuuuuumb thing. Edit: I mean yes. I am also watching it.
  4. And assumes their viewpoint to be a monolithic truth that you will reach upon adulthood or you're wrong.
  5. X-Men: Apocalypse?
  6. Derek Jarman's "Blue" in 3D!
  7. Leon/The Professional?
  8. Yeahhhh, pretty universal complaint about Zootopia. Oddly, if it was Pixar, they would have come up with a brilliant way of handling it. I see a similar problem with superhero or fantasy stories where some characters innately have immense powers, but it's treated as though they're regular humans who need/don't need to be regulated. Sorry, everyone, Magneto is right. If there are superhumans, human society can't contain them. Try giving Dr. Manhattan clear guidelines on when his powers are and are not to be used. He'll probably look ahead into the future and see the benefit of letting you feel better about it, but you have no more authority over him than a cat does over a human. That would probably have been the best way to approach the issue - not framed as a parallel for race at all. Fantastical rules can't handle detail in allegory.
  9. He's had a run of three revenge movies in a row where, basically, all is permitted because the villain is considered subhuman. Spoilers for violence? I guess? A discussion of Tarantino is kinda way outside what we're used to here. And curse words don't kill and subjugate people en masse. That's the difference.
  10. Tarantino's fascination with racial slurs is annoying, and lately his films have gotten bizarrely fascistic. Reservoir Dogs is solid. Pulp Fiction's worth a watch, but meh. I haven't seen Jackie Brown, but the occasional film nut has told me it's his best. Kill Bill hasn't aged well, but if you haven't seen much kung fu, wuxia, or Shaw Brothers films, it's a good intro. Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, and Django Unchained are all garbage. Haven't bothered with Hateful Eight.
  11. A couple that I recommend: Markiplier, especially his Let's Plays of the Five Nights at Freddy's series. Video Games Awesome, especially their playthroughs of the Phoenix Wright games. If you have a particular game you want to see, there's also lparchive.org, which has Let's Plays from forums.
  12. Escape Goat! Such challenge! So action-puzzle!
  13. I highly recommend his magician drama The Prestige.
  14. Metal Gear Solid?
  15. Yes! I've been waiting for something like this since I saw the movie!
  16. If they're willing to learn, that's fantastic. The ones who are proudly ignorant ("I don't mess with that stuff, huh-huh.") are the ones I do not have sympathy for. They've had 30 years, give or take, to get remotely acquainted with some form of computer somewhere.
  17. I got distracted by something else and the dream sort of wandered off and did other stuff. Sorry, no payoff.
  18. I had a high school dream recently. Another of the students was Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I tried to get her interested in watching Buffy on DVD. I think my subconscious has a meta sense of humor.
  19. It's totally subjective memory. They want the good parts, forgetting the problems and limitations they had. Oh, you were a kid and didn't have to know about the adult world or have responsibilities? You also had no choices and were essentially property.
  20. I never looked this one up, but in ye olde times, there were short knives called dirks - maybe it's a corruption of that?
  21. Not quite the same thing, but you might want to check out this movie.
  22. I love love love Revolutionary Girl Utena. One of the best anime of all time. Not at all a fan of the dub (very 90s in its standards), but yeah. The Student Council Arc - Would have been a fun show all on its own, but not a classic. The Black Rose Arc - Oh hai depth. The Akio Arc - Wow, this is not for kids! The (spoiler) Arc - You might be ready to write a thesis on this show by the time it's done. The movie - Totally optional, ignores the canon of the show (except in some fanon theories where it's "what happened after" the show), gorgeous to look at but pretentious gibberish.
