I've long held the opinion that one character you're all likely fans of is "basically a Jewish superhero."

Civil war reactions thread (Spoilers)

He had been deleting them as he went through the movie. It was like a countdown. He intended to die at the end. From what I've read (warning: dumb comic lore ahead), there's a plant in Wakanda that grants these powers. It's poisonous to anyone else, but T'Challa's family line have an inherited immunity to the poison.- 117 replies

As it's typically used, the phrase means "What you just said you have no right to say," or "You're only saying that because of the framework of life experience granted to you by being in this or that dominant power group." It's not quite a thought-terminating cliche, but it's generally intended to mean the discussion is over. Sometimes this glosses over actual substance that doesn't correspond with the speaker's paradigm. If they want to focus on a feminist or LGBT lens (which they usually do), "check your privilege" shuts down discussion along, say, socialist lines. What happens next mostly depends on what faction is dominant in that forum or comment section. It usually gets less substantive and more name-calling very quickly.

Civil war reactions thread (Spoilers)

I went into it expecting to be Team Cap, but... both sides are terrible. The Avengers should have some sort of oversight - that's what SHIELD was for. The movies make out like SHIELD was completely disbanded, but Agents of SHIELD is ongoing, isn't it? The agency still exists in some capacity. The precise oversight the Sokovia Accords suggest is the worst kind of slow-moving bureaucracy to manage an emergency response team. And yet, the Avengers being an absolute law unto themselves is obviously despotic and makes any kind of law they come into contact with pointless. When Hawkeye complains that "criminals" didn't used to mean him, it just means he's lost that special go-anywhere, destroy-anything privilege he had. Of the 13 MCU movies so far (granted, the events of Guardians are not known to those on Earth), 7 have plots where the Avengers or allied "good guys" either created the villain or their actions enabled the villain's plot to be enacted(4 Tony, 1 Black Widow, 1 SHIELD, 1 US military). There should be some supervision.- 117 replies

Immediately - quick, without anything to mediate it. Mediate - Latin middle, media. Use any haphazard combination of mnemonics, associations, jokes, etc. that works for you.

Surprise! It's both a thriller and a comprehensive satire of Japanese culture, especially the kawaii parts. The Japanese legal system is very different from ours (guilty until proven innocent, almost all cases are plea-bargained before going to court), but the game series does specify that this is a future where the legal system has become even more strict (3 day limit, various blatantly unfair rules just to make it hard on the player).

Delightful got it. It's Spider-Man. Wow, we are zipping through these.

Microwaves have important phases to their action, though. If you open the door before the cycle is finished, you're dosing yourself with a bit of radiation. I heard a story anecdotally about a restaurant that added microwaves as quickie food warmers. This was when they were new and not very well-understood. The restaurant took the door off each microwave so waitresses could quickly pop food in and out. All the waitresses got cancer.- 1963 replies
