Was it really much of a war though? If your enemy can essentially hijack you into extinction which is what I think happened. Jason probably released Cytonics, the aliens monitored for critical mass and then hijacked key figures to cause max damage. Eventually humans found some defense but evidently not good enough as seen with the Defiant.

We don't how long it's been, 200 years maybe, although I forget exactly when defending Elysium happens so probably not enough time has passed for ethnicities to disappear

@equinoxI didn't think of that but Jorgen and Spensa are more than likely an item by now and heroes, that might also lead to some tension in books 2&3. If highborn pilots are reenlisting over the objections of their families, those families are probably less than thrilled as they see their topheavy system collapsing. I'd look for a rebellion in book 3 since I don't see Ironsides as an Eisenhower who could keep everyone pointed at the enemy, despite eachother.

Spensa did the FTL jump once under stress, subconsciously she probably remembers how but can't bring it to the surface yet.

As to pilots, my guess is Spensa gave them a huge recruiting boost which could also explain her solo flight. If she were stuck on the ground for a while, she might want to kill something, anything. Also Spensa has probably been told be Everyone, or at least ordinary people, that she's the greatest thing since sliced bread so she'll need something or someone(Jorgen or Rig) to scare the crap out of her and/or remind her she's not as immortal as she thinks she is.

I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would and I can't wait for book 2. My guess is chaser is somewhere out there since it seems obvious he was mindswapped like Denise in Defending Elysium. For now Spin is the only cytonic who can fly since my favorite character is able to block mindswap. He's a tad annoying on rare occasions but as a malfuctioning AI, I understand. I do wonder if Starsight will be one big romance novel, with Spin and Jorgen and possibly Rig and FM. I hope FM is given a role in politics but she'll need a practical person to balance her idealism. It will be interesting to see if Ironsides can go back to her pre first battle of Alta personality or if she's lived with hate for too long. Final thought, Spensa and Vin need to meet, they'd either get on really well or be too similar and try to kill each other.

The Shin could also be very good warriors that only send those out who are too obvious but just waiting for a prophecy or something to try a massive invasion again.

I wonder if the Unmade was also affecting shallan's mother because I seriously doubt a completely sane mother would casually kill one of her children, even under direct orders.
