The Splintercast Reads Shadows of Self, Episode 1: Prologue, and Chapters 1-3

In a shocking twist, a lowly moderator has hijacked the news feed from the treacherous admins to bring you all this: the return of Splintercast!

And this time, I, your intrepid hero FeatherWriter (also occasionally known as Alyx), am here to take on Shadows of Self! Perhaps a bit delayed... but well, hacking my way into the 17th Shard news feed is no small task. I thank you for you patience, dear listeners, and now we can get to the fun!

For those new to Splintercast, I record my reactions in real time as I read new cosmere books for the first time, then edit them down to one cohesive, crazy listening experience. All in all, you can expect a good deal of running theories, in-the-moment commentary, shipping, crying, celebrating, and yelling at characters when they're dumb. And Steris appreciation. Someone has to appreciate Steris Harms and I am just the fangirl for the job. It's its own brand of craziness, but also a lot of fun.

This first episode not only includes an introduction to Splintercast, and also covers the prologue and chapters 1-3. The current schedule will have episodes posted weekly and will run all the way through both Shadows of Self and The Bands of Mourning in a two-book extravaganza! (Consider this my way of apologizing for the lateness!)

Be warned, there are spoilers for the chapters being read, of course, but since it's my first time through each of these chapters, I obviously can't spoil you for anything that happens later in the book!

Please enjoy and remember that I subsist upon comments and responses, so, if you feel so inclined, drop me a note about what you thought below!

Yay! Splintercast is back!  I missed listening to these.

A couple notes (I don't know if you actually looked this stuff up after or not but you know me...):

Marsh did not write the book Wax is reading.  I do not believe Brandon has explicitly confirmed who did, but I think we're pretty sure it was Spook...  Good going Spook.

Stuff is either all the way in, or all the way out of a time bubble.  If a person intersects with the boundary at all they are automatically "inside".  (At least I'm pretty sure that's the way it works.  Kurkistan would know for sure though).

Also, Steris is seriously the best.

Why? Has he had a conversation with Brandon about it?

EDIT: Anyway, Feather, I look forward to listening to it. I intend to as soon as I get home.

Because Time Bubbles are one of Kurk's pet things. Also being either in or out is how I remember it too.

Also,

MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE BOOK IN THE BOX, SERIOUSLY DON'T READ FOR THE LOVE OF BRANDON AND ALL THAT IS COSMERELY (Unless you've already read it).

That feel when she says she really likes Lessie and she's sad she's not in this book.

There were so many moments like that.

I'm very much going to enjoy listening to her reading this. Bahahahaha!

'Cause he is the expert in all things time bubbly. (And I'm pretty sure he has actually asked Brandon about this in fact)

This is the first Shardcast that will start right at home on Soundcloud. You are of course free to download these as you want. I hope you enjoy Soundcloud's player; it's a really great service.

Wait, so you've finished the whole book already? Wicked.

It's not the recording that takes the time, it's the editing on these. Feather's also been insanely busy, as have I.

Re: Speed bubble occupancy

In general, objects are either all-in or all-out of time bubbles. For people in particular, anything living that even touches the bubble is included in it. Note that this "inclusion" doesn't meant that the bubble glorps out and swallows them or the like: rather, the bubble's border stays in place, but the bits of people that are outside of it are still going "fast".

At the Shadows of Self release, I told Alyx that she was crazy for liking Steris. Later, halfway through the book I stopped and said to myself, "Rust. She was right all along. Steris is awesome."

So Feather, I guess I owe you an apology!

In your defense... I'd already finished the book by the time we got to the Midnight release, so I might have had a bit more Steris awesomeness to know of than you had!

BUT YES STERIS IS AMAZING.

I figured that. I've tangled with recording before. I just wanted to be sure she was done before I risked discussing spoilers with her.

I'd hate to be the guy that ruined SoS Shardcast by spoiling stuff for Feather before she'd finished it, so I'm being extra careful.

I also learned to love Steris so much more in this book.

You're a good man, dude.

All attempts to keep Feather spoiler-free are greatly appreciated. Which is why I can never forgive fbstj for spoiling that there is no Renarin POV in Bands. WHY AM I READING IT THEN? (Oh right, for Steris)

Steris is worth it. And Wayne, when he's not being a jerk. And also the crazy fSpiritual shenanigans promised in the blurb.

Great job, Feather, and nice to have you back! :D

Are these going to be a weekly thing? What's the schedule?

I like tragic, horrible things happening to people who don't deserve them.

...unless they're Renarin!

Also, with the way you talk about Lessie in the intro, I'm already looking forward to seeing your reaction to the Big Reveal. :D

Well, I mean, I don't like when Brandon does it to Renarin! But I in my days have written some pretty terrible and horrible things happening to even my darlingest of darlings. (Sorry Ren, I still love you. But I'm always meanest in fiction to the ones I love the most.)

Oh, are you one of those fanfic writers who does horrible things to a character so that you can then have a reason to comfort them? :P
