Shardcast: The Knights Radiant #1

This week on Shardcast, we're going to start a multi-week adventure in discussing all the Orders of Knights Radiant, starting with the Windrunners, Skybreakers, and Dustbringers. You should not be surprised we'll talk about this for three episodes. We go into their oaths, their Surges, and more. Also, space whales and MMO jokes.

This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), Grace (thegatorgirl), and David (Windrunner).

So theory on the resonance is that it is opposite of the surges. The windrunners surges deal with nature and their resonance people. I think the Skybreakers surges deal with people and their resonance will be with nature. Dustbringers nature and their resonance will deal with people and so on around the ring.

Regarding the lead up to Kaladin's Oath to protect even those he hates, I think the issue here was that he had given his word to both Moash and to Dalinar, and these oaths were contradictory. This was why Kaladin in particular had to progress--he had to resolve this conflict within himself. I think that another Windrunner could have stayed at the Second Ideal perfectly happily, without that internal conflict, and not have the same need to progress.

I actually wonder if Kaladin could have sworn a different Third Oath than he did, and killed Elhokar rather than protecting him, if he was in the right state of mind. After all, killing Elhokar was construed by Graves and crew as protecting Alethkar.

Yay, an episode where one of my who’s that Cosmere character submissions was played! I don’t even remember when I sent that one in.

In hindsight, you were probably right, @Chaos. I definitely should’ve led with my normal clue of “this character is [gender].”

@Argent I’m so thinking about doing a submission where the character is one of the Khal’s....

@Windrunner My little brother can’t believe you managed to guess his character with just the first clue! We were both dying from laughter when that happened.

Anyway, I’m definitely the most hyped to learn about the Willshapers. Partially because I really like Venli and partially because I can’t wait to see a Willshaper in action. I’m imagining that they can use Cohesion from a distance, and I’ve envisioned a scene where a Willshaper is riding a wave of rippling stone while destroying enemies.

This episode definitely increased my hype for the Dustbringers though. I forgot how little we really know about them, so it’ll be cool to finally get to learn more about them. I’m excited to see who the new Dustbringer for book 4 is. I hope they get a POV chapter at least once, but I doubt it.

On the topic of how Skybreakers tend to be less powerful/precise in the area of gravitation/flying, I’ve always imagined it as the difference between Lurchers and Coinshots. Additionally, with the whole the fifth ideal making the bond permanent thing, it got me thinking that it might be what allows Radiants to worldhop without killing their spren.
