Shardcast: New Shard? MisCon and BookCon Words of Brandon

This week on Shardcast, we discuss Words of Brandon from last month (and early this month) from MisCon and BookCon, and oh boy there's some exciting stuff. Do we have a new Shard? Is Ingenuity a Shard? Oh, we discuss it immensely, but do feel free to put your comments below. . We also talk about cuddling seons, Gavilar's spheres, spheres in general, and, despite not actually having a question prompting it, we discuss the mists on Scadrial a lot. Oh, and lastly, we make of Jebus for not having videos.

Next week we'll be back with a very exciting topic: this whole "Unity" thing. Get hyped.

Today we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), David (Mr. Croakasaurus, I mean, Windrunner), Ben (Overlord Jebus), and Grace (thegatorgirl). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected] Subscribe to Shardcast at: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:102123174/sounds.rss

You're finally talking about Ingenuity? Because I was just gonna post about that! Other than that, new Shardcast, yay!

*gasp*

I'm more or less famous now. My name was mentioned in Shardcast. Yay!

*edits WTCC thread*

For the record, I was kinda planning for the thread to just die after a couple pages. Didn't happen, so oh well.

Your Shadesmar v Cognitive Realm argument was just incredibly pedantic. Shadesmar is just a better name for every day use than Cognitive Realm. Wolf is better than Canis Lupis.

In world; maybe Willshapers and Elsecallers were prominent early world hoppers who had sway over the early exploration of Shadesmar. Most languages use some form of the word pepper to destcribe spicy, bush growing, bright colored, fruits because Columbus just happened to have promised Ferdinand & Isabela he’d bring back pepper but couldn’t find any and these fruits he found were also spicy.

To the point about fire behaving oddly on Roshar, I don't think that's the reason spheres are used. I originally thought of the vision Dalinar has with the Midnight Essences, where he calls out an oil lantern as primitive. But searching for lantern in both Way of Kings and Words of Radiance shows multiple mentions of oil lanterns in "modern" times.

My theory on spheres is that they evolved from gemstones/Stormlight. i.e. Stormlight was/is obviously important to Roshar. Gemstones can hold Stormlight, therefore gemstones become important. Very small gemstones become impractical (hard to count, easy to lose), but by encasing them in a bit of glass they are a bit easier to manage (because they are a bit larger). It could also be that encasing them in glass is the equivalent of "minting" money, in that lose gems have varying value, but a gem encased in glass has a specific constant value (depending on type and size of gem).

For about the lack of shardworlds both the dark one and the rithamist were originally shard worlds, but were taken out of the Cosmere.

On the topic of Reshek moving Scadrial to the sun in order to burn away the mist. I assumed that he attempted to move the planet, realized it didn't work, then due to his mind expanding from the power realized what the actual problem was and fixed that. The mist clearly could exist during the day on Scadrial, so it seemed reasonable that Rashek was actively keeping the mist in check. I don't see why Ruin would wait for Rashek's death before pushing the mist attempt again.

I proposed a shard called "Artifice" a while back. It doesn't quite capture cleverness the way Ingenuity does, but it gets the creativity angle.

I think Ingenuity is an awesome name for a shard and fits with the theme of the other shards. I am excited to explore the world where Ingenuity resides! I really don't mind the name Shadesmar. I think it's not a super big deal. Cognitive Realm is just to wordy for everyday people to use. I think that's just being nitpicky. I also thought that fire behaving oddly on Roshar was due to the high oxygen environment. Is it possible that fire reacts strongly with stormlight? Does stormlight have combustion properties?  Maybe that's why stormlight was used instead of oil or maybe stormlight was easier /safer to "tame" than fire was, so they went with stormlight as their source of light? Interesting thoughts on Scadrian mists. I always thought of the mists to be a benevolent force that became perverted when Ruin was released from the Well. Guys, interesting podcast, loved it. As always, thanks for your effort into making them. I always look forward to them!

Also, on this week's Shardcast, Cosmere fans get pedantic (gasp, plot twist s/), and the cosmere-wide ramifications of cuddling seons are discussed. (and now I kinda want a seon plush)

A seon tsum tsum. That would be adorable. I'd buy an Ashe plush. Brandon! That would be sweet!

Hey guys :) Great work on the Shardcast!

Popping in because I was actually the interviewer who asked about Brandon's preferred Shard and got "Ingeniuity" back in Bulgaria, so I've been excited to learn about whether it will be cannoized ever since. So it's cool that Brandon keeps not rejecting it outright :D I'm sad to say that at the time I was only half familiar with the Cosmere so I didn't push on him to clarify whether it's an in-world Shard or just a concept he likes, thus giving ground for all this speculation now...

I'm very amused by the discussion of Ingenuity and possible synonyms, because I've been claiming for a long time (long enough for this to have been valid terminology) that Brandon is the Shardholder of Creativity. Awesome to hear it more-or-less officially confirmed!

@Jorr That's ok, I still.get overwhelmed by the Cosmere! I also have a terrible habit of trying to read and figure out everything before/while finishing a story!

@thegatorgirl00@thegatorgirl00 suggested that perhaps Ingenuity resides in silver light. Given Khriss's reaction to kelsier when she found out that he'd directly interacted with Leras, I don't think that's likely. She seemed awed that he'd spoken directly with a shard.

There's a debate in this one about "cognitive realm" vs "shadesmar" as the cosmere standard. I'm actually not at all surprised - regardless of the origins (yeah, maybe elantrians accessed it earlier than rosharans, idk), it's a fitting name. Literally "sea of shades", so maybe once everyone heard that it just stuck because it was simple and evocative.

That is so funny, I listen to ALL of the shardcasts, you guys do an awesome job, but sometimes I listen to them when I'm going to bed and I think I might have fallen asleep before the WTCC (that's the acronym)

Totally missed that you did my Human one on Who's That Cosmere Character, a friend of mine told me that they heard you doing it. IT WAS SO GOOD.

I'm glad you had to have the fifth clue, there was a point where Windrunner said "This character is Human" that I thought for sure was going to be the moment when the proverbial jig was up, but oh man, that was some five star listening.

It was amazing to hear you guys working on that one, I'll have to think of some more good ones, this is fun stuff.
