Ghanderflaffle she/her Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 This is mostly meant for people in, like, a school band, but honestly it doesn’t matter. If you play an instrument hop on in. I’ll talk about marching, pep, and wind ensamble all day. I’m a good ol' clarinet.
Mat he/him Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I play piano, but... it's not really a mobile instrument. I played recorder in 4th grade...
FriarFritz Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I play tuba in...well now a college band. I think I'm first chair seeing as I'm the only tubist
Lunamor she/her Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 *former orchestra childz breaks down the door* In middle school I was first chair in cello. Spoiler There were only two of us, but still. 1
dannnex male Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 (edited) Oh, are we flexing chair positions? I got 1st chair bass for regionals and I was sightreading the music. we were supposed to have been practicing it for the last 6 months. Granted, it was bass, usually a small section, but there were still like 12 of us, biggest bass section I’ve been in since. moral of the story: never practice, ever. Things will generally just work out. #CoastingOnNaturalTalentNeverComesBackToBiteYouEver Edited September 7, 2020 by Danex 4
Bearer of all agonies he/him Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Well my chair was. . . Sixth chair. . . Oh. Well whatever. I play the trumpet.
Koloss17 She/They Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I’m an oboe, so there isn’t much competition for chairs. I feel like oboes are the outliers of band. We rarely get new people and we are special advanced instruments with tough double reeds that only bassoons can relate to. We also get mostly rests in pieces. It’s like we are hated by all composers everywhere. And when we do get to play, we just play the flute part but without the high notes. It’s frustrating, really. the only good stuff is that all the oboists I have met are insanely proud of their instrument, myself included. I wonder if there are any members of the oboe cult on the shard.
Mat he/him Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 In piano, there's only one chair. I get first chair every time I play. I totally know what first chair is.
Ghanderflaffle she/her Posted September 7, 2020 Author Posted September 7, 2020 I’m first chair, but the clarinet section is only kinda competitive this year.
Zephrun’s Imperium they/he Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 (edited) Whooo, I can be part of this. Hi guys, hi. I play clarinet and I really like band. That's basically it. I'm not the greatest, but I'm not bad by any means. I just really, really like to play and I think band is magical. Anybody have any funny band stories? Edited September 7, 2020 by Shard of Thought
Jaywalk he/him Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I’m a trumpet player! Yes, ego is most definitely a problem in our section.

Ironwill2112 he/him Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I play the TUBA!!! am I the only one?
Bearer of all agonies he/him Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 Yay! @Jaywalk! We trumpets definitely have egos. It gets really annoying. People are always bragging about who’s better. 1

dannnex male Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Just heard a great band joke. How do you get 2 piccolos to play in tune? Spoiler Shoot one.

Our trumpet section did have an ego problem though. Also if we are comparing I was first trombone. (But only because no one practiced)
Ghanderflaffle she/her Posted September 23, 2020 Author Posted September 23, 2020 I kinda forgot about this, but now that I remember it, let's talk marching band as it's the season for it! Our show is called A Pirate's Adventure. I like it, but we don’t get a lot of drill this year because we have to stay at 4 step intervals.
thebubblesarealie he/him Posted September 26, 2020 Posted September 26, 2020 I’m a (very bad) 3rd chair trombone in a Jazz Big Band. Never been a big fan of the classical stuff, and I want to play the stuff I listen to (which, to be fair, is now mostly funk and jazz-pop, not straight jazz). 1
Bearer of all agonies he/him Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 I played the trumpet today! It was fun. It was also online, so, yeah. It was difficult. But still fun.
MusicalReader he/him Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Jazz Band, anyone? Big band or small groups? 2
Bearer of all agonies he/him Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 I couldn’t join Jazz band last year because of Hockey. . . and this year it is shut down.
Ghanderflaffle she/her Posted October 18, 2020 Author Posted October 18, 2020 I always wanted to join jazz band, but clarinets aren’t jazz instruments.
Shard of Reading he/him Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 Not according to my band teacher they weren't.
