"Oh, Shadow," Star said gently. "I knew there was something in that heart of yours. It's going to be all right. You'll make it out."

“The problem is that there is nothing in my heart,” She whispered.

Star pulled away and put her hand under Shadow's chin, looking her in the eyes. "You might not see it," she said, "but I do. And that has to be enough until you can find it." She smiled and pushed Shadow's hair out of her eyes. "It's there. Waiting for you."

I’ve never seen ‘hafta’ spelled out, and it looks…odd.

Her bloodshot eyes went wide. “How…?”

I like colloquialisms like that. Also, I was listening to the song Lost Cause by Imagine Dragons and it fits Shadow to a tee. 

"How do I know? Well... that's awfully complicated. But it doesn't really matter, I don't think."

BoS eyed her, but didn’t press further. She wiped the tears, taking a deep breath. “What now?”

Star turned toward Xino and Pheonix, blushing when her eyes fell upon Pheo. "Now," she said, "we get out of here. Do you think you can find the lenses we used to get here in the first place, Xino?"

Xino summoned his weapons. "I've got enough juice, yeah. Straight back to the boat?"

Xino nodded and swung his sword, leaving a fiery trail in the air behind it.

"Through here," he said, and stepped through.

Star's expression brightened. "Off we go, then," she said, following him through.

The group materialized on a hill just below the Cloud Nine.

"Here we are," said Xino, waiting for the last person to get through and then sealing the portal behind them.

Star breathed in deeply. "Ah," she said. "It's nice to be back.

Ember flinched as Star's presence suddenly loudened in her mind. "She is back," she said excitedly. "Star is no longer in Silence's Realm!"

“Finally!” Heather exclaimed. “Do you know where they are?”

Ember shook her head. "No. But she is safe." Ember grinned, actually managing to make her smile look natural. "I told you she would be!"

Heather laughed. It was still cold, but it was enough.

"I hope they come back soon," Ember said. "It has been... longer than it has been." 

Tamika looked between the two other people in her room. "Uh, girls?" she said, a tad annoyed. "I did come here to be alone." I don't even know Star, she thought to herself. But I do know that she's the reason AJ died. Storm the fact that I came back, he would have lived had it not been for her!

But Tom... a part of her thought quietly. 

Storm him too. 

Her anger flashed on her face, a gleam of purple in her brown eyes.

Heather glared at her. “Fine, we will leave.” She turned her heel and left the room towards the deck.

[Zephrun’s Imperium they/he]

Ember was a little slower to follow suite. She looked at Tamika thoughtfully. "Your emotion is powerful," she said.

Tamika looked away for a moment. "Yes, well. That happens when you're a Sliver." 

"Oh." Ember closed her mouth and stared at Tami for a moment more before following Heather. 

Tamika flopped backwards onto her bed. What a terrible day.

The boat drifted to the ground, extending a ramp of glowing light to the feet of the returning travelers.

Tom appeared at the top of the bridge, grinning. "You made it! Good job. You didn't have too much trouble, I hope?"

Star started up the ramp, shaking her head and smiling. "You have no idea. But it was definitely worth the trouble."
