There was only one thing Ember was afraid of. And that was herself. She was made to be indestructible, unstoppable, and emotionless. And she would have been, had it not been for Star. The two sisters had a very special kind of Connection and because of it, Ember was capable of feeling. Star's Windrunner-like regret at not being able to save someone translated in Ember's heart as a loathing of failure and weakness. She was created to save and protect. If she could not do that, then what was she worth? It was a good thing Tom was able to heal so quickly. Ember would have felt terrible for hurting him. Healing others was not something she was capable of.
