"Yeah," said Leona. "Most of us are either from Seattle or the northwestern U.S. Otherwise we'd've been directed to a different HQ when we bonded our spren."

“Saturday” Rob replied. “As for surges, maybe we can practise in the sparring basement below.”

"Sure, sounds fun." Flid stands up to follow Rob.

"Mind if I join? I need to figure out how to use Cohesion without getting stuck. And Transportation for that matter."

"Finally." said Twinkle.

I return from Doc's office, with a bit of melancholy- he seemed to have his hands full taking care of a house full of Radiants- not much time to train me in the Bondsmith surges.

"Did somebody mention sparring?" I ask.

“It’s in the basement,” replied leona. “I’ll go practice with you. I need to soulcast things besides cake.”

"How about pie?" James asked, jokingly, as he followed Flid down the stairs

Edwin followed, a nervous expression suddenly on his face. Maybe I should think before saying things like these.

Excitedly Mahad followed him.

There, the tree on our left.

He started to fly over, but reduced his speed, as he didn't want to scare the birds away.

"Division."

She replied and got to her feet. She was better with Division. No need to embaress herself completely at the beginning. That could wait for a bit. Ben had been relaxed about her maths skills, but still, she didn't want him to think of her as some kind of looser. Getting to her feet she walked over to him, determined to concentrate and stay focused.

Glint followed. As he cautiously approached the tree, he saw that it was a flock of blue jays. Beautiful creatures. Mean, but still beautiful.

==================

“Ok. If we are doing Division, we should probably have something to practice on...” He thought for a moment, then grabbed one of the dummies from the side of the room. Dragging it into the middle of the room, next to the spheres, he said, “This should work. We can get one of the Elsecallers, Lightweavers, or possibly even Bondsmiths to fix it later.” He paused, making some minor adjustments in the position of the dummy. “I read that control is very important when it comes to Division- it lets you conserve stormlight and do more concentrated damage. Try and destroy a single finger without harming anything else on the dummy.”

Mahad saw the blue birds and whirled around happily. They were beautiful. Maybe he could find a feather for Glint and have Shana pick it up later. Slowly he moved closer, searched for a nest. It was only when one of them shrieked angrily, that he zipped away hastily back to Glint.

They're scary. What are they?

He asked, now wary of the beautiful animals.

======================

Shana listened to his explanation and then stepped over to the dummy. Inhaling stormlight she felt it come alive inside of her. It ran through her veins, urged her onwards, pushed her to run, to train, to move. Taking a deep breath she accepted it and stayed calm, in control. It was a tool, her tool. That much she had learned already.

Mentally she touched the finger of the dummy, tried to understand what it was, a finger. Unconciously she lifted her hand as well, moved and it felt so good to do something to not stand still anymore. She concentrated on the finger again. Wood, wood was easy, it broke easily. Her mind clashed down on the finger, and it felt great to use the storm inhabiting her body, to feel a part of it leave her in a rush. The finger turned it to dust and the whole hand as well.

Grinning sheepishly she turned to Ben.

"Sorry?"

She offered and hoped he wouldn't be mad.

They are called blue jays.

Glint inched a little further away from the birds. Even though they likely couldn’t harm him, he wasn’t taking any chances.

They can be rather mean creatures, although they are very beautiful.

“That’s ok!” Ben replied, grinning back. Watching the hand suddenly turn into dust when Shana lifted hers was awesome. “Let’s try a finger on the other hand. Try holding less stormlight this time.” He positioned the dummy so the other hand was facing Shana.

“Pie? Why pie? I greatly prefer cake. Besides, being able to soulcast fire, water, air, stone, or steel is far more useful.”

Leona followed them downstairs and into the training room.

“Okay. What first?”

Oh. I didn't know that.

Mahad flew a circle and thought about the birds. At least for a second. Maybe it was a second.

We could sneak close, try to see if they lost a feather. I could distract them and you take a look?

===================

Ben grinned at her and he was nothing but beautiful when he did that. His whole face lit up, his eyes shone. Shana felt her smile widen, until she was grinning as well, while he adjusted the dummy again. Less stormlight, she could do that.

Inhaling was easy, and when she reached out for the finger this time, she felt elated as if she was floating. Happily she opened her hand, focused on the finger, prepared to -

She stopped, forced herself to focus. The finger only the finger. A deep steadying breath, her eyes only looking at the finger, not at Ben with his slightly messy hair - focus! Concentrating she prepared herself, tried to contain her surge on the finger and only the finger and then clenched her open hand together, her mind pulverising the finger at the same time.

When she walked over, looked at what she'd done she started to smile again. The finger was gone, and maybe half of the two next to him. But it was good, a lot better than before.

"Almost!"

She told Ben joyfully, only then noticing, that some of the others were stepping into the room as well. But they seemed to be talking to each other, so she simply waved and then kept her attention with Ben.

“Some.” she said. “I prefer a long or crossbow and my knives. Cause of my ankle.”

She grabbed a bow off a rack, and began rapidly firing at targets.

"It was a joke", I respond somewhat bemused, "besides, variety is the spice of life, and I don't see why dessert should be excluded"

Turning towards the weapons rack, James slightly shudders. "I should have mentioned, I'm a pacifist" turning around resolutely to face his colleagues, "but there are other ways to defeat an enemy"

Hmm... are you sure you are ok with them chasing you?

Glint’s glow faded slightly.

I don’t want you to get hurt.

When Shana grinned, Ben could only stare. She was pretty. Really pretty. He couldn’t believe that he hadn’t noticed it before. When she sucked in the stormlight, her faint glow and the pure white smoke rising off her skin made her seem ethereal, like she was some beautiful alien from another world. He certainly had never seen anyone quite like her on Earth. He was so captivated by her that he didn’t realize she had attacked the dummy until she said “Almost!” He turned to look at it, and his eyes widened. “That was amazing!” he said, running to the dummy to inspect Shana’s work. “It’s supposed to take at least a week of constant practice to even come close to this stage.”

Flid looked back over at Ben and Shana.  Why are they looking at each other so weirdly? he thought. Must be some battle thing. Bliss simply sighed at this thought.
