"Fine." He grabbed a blanket and tossed it on the floor, then grabbed some pillows and made a kind if nest out of them, with the blanket on the floor. Then he scooped up Eepy, gently plopped her I to the nest, folded the extra portion of blanket over her, and stepped back. "How's that?"

“She reached out her talons for him. “No leaving,” she commanded.

"What is it?"

". . . I'm sorry. That must be hard."

It was weird to be petting a chair.

The chair became a regular chair again.

"Hmm. Very well. Your Author is the person who dictates who you are- your personality, looks, skills, background; as well as your actions. They wrote you, as their name implies."

"Not scared, just cautious."

-

"Well, we can go find someone, then."

Fly regarded her uncertainly. “I… what do you want with us?”

-

“Ah, it’s nothing. He did love me.”

"Nothing bad. I don't want to hurt anyone, I just want to help Bat."

-

"Did? Oh . . . I'm sorry. When did he pass?"

Fly messed with the sash of her dress nervously.

“Promise?”

Bat knelt down and put his hands on her shoulders. “She’s not gonna hurt anyone. She’s not like the Narrators in the stories— she’s just like us, but with Narration abilities. I promise it’ll be fine.”

Fox looked up at him, searching for confirmation in his eyes. She must have found it, because her expression lightened and she hugged him.

-

“Quite a while ago. Shortly after I met my wife.”

Tam smiled at the both of them.

"I promise I won't hurt anyone," she said.

She conjured a little pink bracelet and offered it to Fly.

"I'm so sorry. That must have been hard."

"Yep."

They were about halfway down, now.

"Well, who would you like to scare?"

"Look, I can do everything I need in here. So if you want to sleep, go ahead. I'll stay in this room. Ok?"

“Okay,” she chirped, and burrowed happily into the nest.

She shrugged.

"I lost my parents when I was little. I barely remember them."

He set down his machine and met her eyes, gaze soft.

“I’m sorry.”

"Thank you. It's alright though- my neighbors took care of me after, and then my older brother, once he was old enough to."
