"Alright . . . then, I don't know. Is there anywhere I really need to go? I barely know who I am."

Lillian shrugged. "Um... usually it takes my informant a little to get in contact with me. It's really whenever he finds jobs, so I just wait around in a town until he does. Sometimes it's hours. Sometimes it's weeks."

-

Tam was no fun.

Eleanor existed elsewhere.

By herself.

She also fixed the roof.

"How are you, Fox?"

-

"Like . . . like a recorder?"

He smiled at Orchid.

"You're welcome to as many as you like."

"Great!"

Fox grinned. “Good! I’m very good! Hehe.”

“No, no. We have plenty of that technology.”

“Thanks!”

“Case in point.” Rebus said to the Author. “I do understand your technical issues, but I need to act.”

A copy of him appeared near a new or idle character played by whatever Author happened to be watching.

Rose cowered. “N- no, I didn’t… I didn’t! I haven’t! I care about him too!”

-

Symbol nodded. “If only I were more important.”

She paused. “Do you think Sequence will have another party in a hundred pages or so?”

Tam flinched, as if she’d been struck. Exactly. He cared about you, and now he’s captured and hurt and Cricket’s dead and- and- and it’s all your fault!
I think real Tam would react differently to this scenario, though she might have a second breaking point after all.

“I can help with that - I wasn’t supposed to really be anything but a messenger, and look where I am now. The first part is making your Author excited about you.”

“I’m unsure - I do hope there will be a party, though Sequence may not be the one to host it. I considered hosting one myself, but it would be hard to pull off without damaging my threat value.”
