"Even still."

He started zipping around the cellar, looking for anything interesting.

"How do you handle it? The loneliness?"

Other than the dead rat?

The walls and floor were completely made of stone, and it looked untouched from the ash that marred the front of the museum. Overhead, the ceiling exposed wooden rafters, also miraculously untouched by the fire. There were a few dead rats up there, caught in traps. A knife. And a blank photograph.

". . . Dunno. Being in nature helps."

He inspected the knife and the photograph.

"Yeah, nature's nice. It's so... peaceful."

The knife was short and dull, like it hadn't been sharpened in a long time.

The photograph was still blank, but if Nick looked closely, he could see small traces of ink that hadn't been wiped from the photo. A hand here, an eye there. Traces of color.

"Yeah . . ." he muttered as he inspected the picture closer.

Huh.

He set them down and went back over to Lillian.

"So, how'd you and Enric meet?"

"Oh, that's a funny story actually. Enrik used to be a tether."

"That makes sense." he nodded.

"Yeah." Moni sighed. "I'd be going on a traumatic quest one way or another. At least in Ragnorok, not too many Narrators are willing to get involved. They don't want to be trapped here."

"That's because they're all idiots." Nameless strolled into view, waving at Moni and Perseus happily. "It's easy enough to make a clone of yourself, then send that clone into Ragnorok. No trapping of self involved. Hello again Moni. I see you're upset. Funny, how you call me a monster when the real Nameless is the one who hurt you so badly."

Lane looked at Jacob unsure. What do you think? he sent to him.

I think we've completed our mission, so we should get out of this cursed place before we all die.

1 hour ago, TwinStorm said:

"Oh. You. You and your bloody trials. Is Rose with you yet?"

"Do you see her?" The Dreamsmith laughed softly. "I think you may not understand your position. The trial was not what you think. Omen put you in an impossible position on purpose."

She tilted her head. "You're so multifaced."

"Huh. I thought I was being fairly one-dimensional, but I suppose everyone has their own opinions."

"He was? For who?"

"Oh, some old lady. Her name was Cora. Her children no longer kept in touch with her, and Enrik was her only companion. She was the only poltergeist who didn't try to hurt me. I think she wanted to die. When I tried to take the memories from Enrik, instead of disintegrating him, it moved the Connection from her to me."

"Are you being sarcastic?"

"Nope! I'm being genuine," he laughed.

"So what, if Enrik dies, do you?"

She laughed. "Other way around. I don't die if Enrik dies, but if I die, he dies also. I don't get it either. Normally, tethers can never be living things. I don't know how he came to be."

"How are you feeling, now?"

"Whenever you're ready to go."

"Right..." she said, pushing herself out of the chair. She only felt a little dizzy now. She could definitely walk places and do things. Definitely. "So... tell me about yourself, Nick. I hardly know a thing about you."

She shrugged. "Anything you're comfortable sharing. What's your favorite color? What makes you happy? What do you want in the future? Stuff like that."

"That's okay. I'm still figuring stuff out as well. Why blue?"
