They didn't have to walk very far before-

"Oh, thank heavens! There you are!"

A figure stumbled out of the trees.

Tw: blood/gore

Spoiler

It was definitely a person, from the way it walked, but . . . it's entire upper body and some of it's right leg were covered in red crystals. They seemed to be growing from the person, in fact, especially since many of them were covered with dried bits of meat or viscera, and coated in blood.

"Please! You gotta help us!" it begged, hobbling towards and kneeling on the ground in front of them.

Tam put a hand over her mouth, sickened and horrified.

Bat stared. His heart started thudding— this was bad.

“Okay. Uh, wh- what happened?”

The landing area was coming up beneath them.

"I-I don't know!" the figure cried, distressed. "D-don't know . . . anyone who might've known is g-gone now . . ."

“How about you? Are you feeling okay? I should change your bandages too.”

". . . True. Alright."

He handed her the supplies.

She unwound his bandages and applied the antiseptic. That same soothing feeling happened again whenever she touched him.

"It's just- we're all just . . ."

It held out its crystal-enveloped arms helplessly.

"I-I saw you get rid of the crystals earlier . . . please help us . . ."

“How did this happen? What do you remember?”

Bat was beginning to get frustrated.

That seemed to be happening lost lately.

Tam squeezed his hand.

"It- it just started spreading . . ." the figure said. "Growing out of the ground, on walls, our clothing, even . . . we didn't think much of it at first, but by the time we realized it was dangerous-" he shrugged.

"And then people started dying because of it- I just-" He stopped.

Goodness . . .

Tam got rid of the crystals on the figure -it was a young boy- and healed him of his wounds immediately.

He gaped at his arms for a moment, clearly shocked.

"Wha- oh, oh thank you! Thank you!"

Then, realizing now was not the time to celebrate, he got up and started running back the way he'd come.

"Hurry! Hurry, everyone else is this way! Oh, thank you!"

mmmmmm poorly written but whatever lol you get the point

She snorted. “You’re such an idiot, you know that?”

Symbol agreed.

“If my Author would ever do anything with me…” she muttered.

“Says the one talking to a mirror in a dream in a vision made by an insane ghost of a Narrator who isn’t even real. I at least understand what’s real and what isn’t.” The reflection sneered at her, but she knew from her own personality that hurt lay behind those angry eyes.
Rebus smiled. “Actually, I can help with that. We should go on a quest, or even just a walk - it’ll get you more screen time, which will get you more attachment and character development. And it lets me wait for Cricket to come back.”

The boy led them back to- not the town, exactly, but a little homestead near the town.

"Hurry!" he called again, running through the back door and vanishing from view.

Just now, Kajsa said:

“Mhm.” She finished up.

He rolled his shoulders back and make sure the bandages were tight.

"Much better. Thank you."

Then he picked up the panther cub again and cuddled it to his chest.

"What should name him?"

Rose scowled. “Well, you’re not even real. So there.”

“That would be nice.”

The inside of the house was dark- far darker than it probably should have been, considering the morning sun should have been shining directly through the windows. A staircase led down into some sort of basement to their right, and was even darker.

"Down here!" called the boy from the cellar.

There was a log by the air strip.

Bat hesitated. “Can I have a flashlight?” He asked Tam. “Or preferably something brighter?”

She summoned two extra-bright lanterns for the both of them.
