Bat set a tree on fire.

“So there. Don’t correct my… my… not proper talking.”

-

Spren tapped her neck with a leg. It felt light and slightly tickly. “Well, take it from someone who knows. It’ll all turn out fine. It’s not like we’re looking at a possible extinction event,” she consoled.

. . . It's still grammar-

No, wait-

GAH!

Just ignore me . . .

I can't-

*sigh*

Nevermind.

-

She kept staring at her hand.

. . . But we could be, I guess.

“Thanks,” he said flatly, “I won’t. Also, I don’t like you. Also, tell my Author to shut up!”

-

“Not—“ Spren stopped abruptly. “Yes. Of course. But don’t worry, I’m sure everything will be fine.”

Ok but like—

“Shut up, dummy.”

Symbol grinned. “That’s very true. And a very interesting thing to say. Credit to your Author, then.”

Rebus would like to note that Malevolence ruling the world qualifies as an extinction event, as does the release of the Witherlord. Rebus himself might even cause an apocalypse of some sort.

The reflection imitated her, still influenced by her motions. You shut up!

"I do try to be insightful and interesting." Rebus smiled. "It's one of the best ways to stay alive, I've found."

She eyed the panther really really suspiciously.

Holt cuddled the panther to his chest and laid back on a branch.

Corysande eyed Holt, too, wondering who exactly she was hanging with. Was he… dangerous?

Nothing's ever fine, she muttered. Everything always goes wrong.

“If that were true, wouldn’t you be dead?”

“Feel better?”

She nodded. “We’ll have to land soon.”

Spren was acutely aware of this.

She snorted. “You’re such an idiot, you know that?”

-

Symbol agreed.

“If my Author would ever do anything with me…” she muttered.

She shrugged.

Maybe me being alive was the the thing that went wrong.

Holt played with the cub a little before noticing her look.

". . . What? He's really not dangerous, I swear. You wanna pet him?"

Spren knocked her on the head.

“That’s a bad way to think and very false!”

-

“I WANNA PET HIM I WANNA PET HIM!”

Elliot abandoned his drum set, ran over, pet the cub and cooed at him, and then went back to his drums and promptly faded away.

Tam kinda wished Cricket had left her in the snowbank. Then, at least, she wouldn't have had a chance to mess everything up so badly.

Why not? No one really cares. Bat probably hates me now.

-

Holt yelped, confused, but then shrugged and chose to ignore it.

“He’s just mad…” she sounded uncertain.

And since I’ve already waited too long anyway, Bat came out of the forest and waved sheepishly at Tam.

-

He chose well.

And he has every right to be, she said bitterly. I'd hate me too, if I was where he was.

She didn't care enough to look up when she heard him approach.

-

Indeed.

Bat dropped down to sit next to her and wrapped his arms around her tightly.

“I’m sorry for yelling at you,” he murmured into her hair.

. . . It's okay, she mumbled after a second. I understand why you're so angry.

He squeezed her. “Yeah, well, I’m sorry.”

He felt really bad now, so he was just gonna hug her until she felt better.

No, I'm sorry. It's my fault you're angry. I shouldn't have done that.

“It’s okay. You were just trying to— it’s fine. Really, it’s okay. I really shouldn’t have lost it like that.” He kissed her hair.

She started to contradict him again, but then felt like it wasn't worth the effort and gave up.

Okay. Thank you.

She leaned into him.

She still felt awful, but maybe he didn't hate her as much as she'd thought he did . . .

That made him happy. He still felt kind of panicked inside, and nervous, and kind of like a worm, but he got to hug her and make her be less sad.

I really do love her.
