That was a weird question.

"Uh . . . yeah. Why?"

“Well… you’re a Drus, aren’t you? So you’re… not human. I just wondered if you had some different characteristics.” She tilted her head.

"Oh. Uh . . . not really. We basically look the same. And I mean my dad was a human, so . . ."

He shrugged.

“So… you’re, like, half and half?”

". . . Not exactly? The Dryad- Drus- whatever- those traits are always dominant."

“Oh.” She frowned, fascinated.

Holt hoped it wasn't dangerous.

"Do you know what that is?"

“I… I don’t know… I can try to see.”

". . . If you're sure."

She was a Goddess, after all. She could probably kill whatever it was if she really wanted to.

She reached out her hand, tilting her head. At her command, the tree branches moved and parted, but there was nothing. She frowned. She didn't like this.

that sounds so wrong 😭😂

Utility pretended not to notice and attempted to crush the first Rebus once more.

Rebus raised a eyebrow, disappearing just before he was crushed. The copy behind Utility attempted to hit his core with the Plotblade.

Neither did hold.

He hopped around to a few different trees, looking for the thing.

On the fourth tree, he came face to face with a giant panther. It bared its teeth at him, hissing.

Too fast? Utility asked before they continued.

He yelped and went back to the last tree.

"Panther," he said quickly. "Big one."

It prowled forward, leaping between branches with practiced ease.

"Where??"

“Oh, just some of our servants might rebel.”

She hugged Bat tighter.

There's . . . there's gotta be something . . . please . . . she begged, feeling hopeless.

Exactly. There’s got to be something. I just haven’t found it yet. Please don’t freak out. I love Bat, and I really don’t want to do anything drastic. But…

You alright? If you need anything, feel free to ask.

The echoing footsteps sped up faster and faster, blending together into a roaring sound.

You're right - I should get on with it. Rebus's teleporter activated, opening a gate to his moon. "You'll be safe there - there's going to be some collateral damage!" He ensured all the hostages were untied, throwing a few more utility fog spears to stall.

She swore and started running.

-

They all ran away through the portal.

Rebus shot him with a railgun round which appeared and exited through portals. Whatever do you mean?

Ah, nevermind.

It hit him, but he attempted to score Rebus with high-intensity lasers.

Okay, okay . . .

She tried to calm herself down a little.

But what?

They all ran away through the portal.

Rose quite quickly ran into a flat, cold surface. The noises stopped, leaving dead silence. And she saw herself, staring back at her.

Rebus was fairly relieved, and closed the portal. On the other side was a gorgeous city, soaring skyscrapers as sleekly designed as one would expect from Rebus. Fountains, greenery, laughing people, the smell of food all contributed to an inviting, rather than intimidating atmosphere.

The utility fog in front of Rebus opened a portal to protect him. Incidentally, it was a portal to a star, with heat and pressure shielding but the full brightness directed towards Utility.

She made more branches move aside, and suddenly, there it was. She gasped, color draining from her face. It hissed and growled, then leapt. She smacked it out of the air with a large tree limb, and it fell a few yards away.

okay so

she still has her abilities but she's able to die and get wounded

Holt's eyes went wide, and he grabbed the tree he was currently in, making it flower.

He did the same to another nearby tree and grabbed some of them off.

It was Rebus, of course. He'd gladly make people suffer for their Authors.

Rebus's lab coat was smoldering, and he had mirrored sunglasses on, but otherwise looked no worse for wear.
