"Oh." Season paused. "Really?".

“Yeah! Sorry if I broke anything, by the way… Ma throws hard.”

Ugh, she hated being able to read these again.

So . . . you don't know . . . ?

Not completely. I’m afraid it may be partially linked to my own mental state, which is obviously unfair. But at least it feels like a natural progression for him.

Bat pulled away and scowled at both. “I’m right here.”

"Your... mom did this? Are you okay?"

She sat against a tree and stared at the ground, feeling . . . not sad, just a strange sort of detachment.

. . . But . . . why?

Rose paused.

The scientist watched the fight with interest.

The echoing footsteps continued to sound.

Rebus's bearing had changed, when he brought the Narration back into himself. He was more purposeful, confident, almost assured that he would win. Though he had Narrated a teleporter to the corner of the cavern, so maybe he wasn't completely confident.

The stone encased Rebus and sucked him down into it.

Rebus, deciding it was probably the ground and not the rock he'd destroyed, met the liquid rock with a wall of utility fog and leapt into the air. He had a short staff in his hand, having drawn it from his belt and pointed it at Utility in the blink of an eye. It was humming with energy, clearly capable of firing some form of projectile from the way Rebus held it.

"Your mom didn't want to worry you?" she said. Even as she said this, her golden-blonde hair faded to auburn, and her tan darkened. "I'm Season, by the way. Well, now Autumn."

. . . Yeah?

Because it feels as though there’s nothing else to do. Bat is dying, and I am dying as well. Metaphorically, of course, to both.

He shrugged. “Something about rebels and stuff. Hi, Autumn! You’re pretty.”

Utility summoned a rather strong, enormous shield and held it over him.

How much longer do you plan for this to go on?

. . . What?! What- wait, no . . . I'm confused . . . what do you mean?

She got up and hugged Bat again, anxious.

I don’t know how much longer either of us will be consistently around. What is there to do in the Thread? Invent and fix catastrophies?

There's . . . there's gotta be something . . . please . . . she begged, feeling hopeless.

You alright? If you need anything, feel free to ask.

The echoing footsteps sped up faster and faster, blending together into a roaring sound.

You're right - I should get on with it. Rebus's teleporter activated, opening a gate to his moon. "You'll be safe there - there's going to be some collateral damage!" He ensured all the hostages were untied, throwing a few more utility fog spears to stall.

Utility blocked these and reached to close the portal.

Utility pretended not to notice and attempted to crush the first Rebus once more.

"And now I can go anywhere I want in this grove, which is definitely nice."

“That sounds really nice. Just… being one with nature.” She paused. “Do you… look human?”
