The cavern, other than that, was dead silent. Even the footsteps were unsettling, though it wasn’t immediately obvious what was off about them.
Rebus, freed from his bonds, hurried over and cut hers by hand, the glasses at worryingly low power. “I did try to tell you I was prepared for this. Let’s recuse these people, and then get out of here!”

Actually, she’d still be paralyzed. That could be a problem.

Utility appeared in the air ten-or-so feet away.

"I think you'll find rescuing them to be quite a bit harder than expected."

"That has to do with something I wanted to ask you." Malevolence sifted through the tea basket, taking a few bags out. "I understand you were once bonded to a withergeist. I must admit some curiosity about the process. How did you do it?"

Sequence stiffened slightly, the light in her eyes noticeably dimming. Aelinor looked surprised for a moment, then looked at Sequence with an indecipherable expression. "I... If I answer your questions, you'll answer mine, yes?"

Rebus began to pace. "We should still do it, of course. Perhaps if Malevolence finally activates the teleporter, we can speak with the rabbits. But for now, my Author has created a magic system concept, which would assist in discovering new creatures."

"Oh?" Balitan looked up. "What is it?"

Rebel pretended to search around in his bag, which created a laser weapon for him. He pointed it at something unimportant, which combusted. "If your technology is useless, it sound like you might be interested in my better technology."

The captain snorted. "The power of our king is far greater than any technology you could give us."

Fair. Regardless.

Moni came to a stop, reaching into her map. "I think we're far enough away that they won't be able to track us. Let's figure out where we are."

The student let out a yelp as her body jumped into the air without her permission and proceeded to go sprawling across the floor.

Subversion suppressed a grin. "I suppose that's a fail." She turned to the teacher. "Should I continue, or let someone else have a turn?"

"I... I'd rather die. I am free." Simon whispered.

Lane, however, could not take it and stood up. "Malevolence! He sent us!"

The king turned his gaze onto Lane, leaving Simon to slump to the ground. "Malevolence? Who is this Malevolence, and what does he want with my kingdom?"

15 hours ago, TwinStorm said:

"What invitation? Also, what is going on? You don't wanna fight me, Love. Set these people free."

Even as he voiced his confusion, Cricket felt the answers entering into his mind. Phantom memories filled his mind. Malevolence had taken over a kingdom with the aid of his rabbits, claiming an artifact of great power and using it to establish domination over a wide area of the Thread. Several groups had attempted to defeat him, and all who did so failed. Cricket had been part of one such attempt, leading a rebellion against Malevolence, but Malevolence had caught him and his followers in a trap, killing some, capturing others, and scattering the rest. Shortly after, Malevolence had issued an ultimatum. Every day that went by without Cricket turning himself in, he would execute one hundred innocent people.

Malevolence laughed at Cricket. "You're right. I don't want to fight you. Accept your death or accept the deaths of these poor innocent people." He snapped his fingers, and a dozen combat drones popped up, taking aim at the gathered prisoners. "Well?"

11 hours ago, Halcyon The Only said:

"I'll take my chances, thanks," she said dryly, then poofed into a cloud of crystalline flakes.

She reappeared. "Do you really expect them to?" She scoffed. "You can either have a Thread that bends to the needs of the new generation, or you can have a dead Thread passed up by TLPW, whatever that is."

"No, the primary purpose of a Narrator is to entertain the Author behind them." She shrugged. "Ask any of the Authors around the Thread today, and refer to my earlier comment."

"Narrators entertain their Authors by telling stories. They shouldn't act like normal characters. At least not all the time. It demeans them."

Assuming that Nameless was done talking to her, Tam went back to fine Bat.

@Halcyon The Only

Bat had been thinking.

Or trying not to, more accurately. He knew somewhere deep inside that bad things would happen if he thought. Something about him was faltering. Something was unsure.

Or maybe he was, as his Author had promised, finally going insane.

He stared at the bark of a tree, imagining he saw shapes in it. Happy shapes. No dangerous shapes.

“$&@%#!” Rebus said, showing off his ability to pronounce symbols. He set his face, briefly turning to the scientist (@Halcyon The Only). “Listen - I’m sorry, but I lied to you. I think you will understand why. Narration is too much power for any person, but sometimes that’s needed. I understand that you fear these powers - and I do too, frankly - but I think I have no choice but to take them up again. If you do not trust me after this, I’ll leave, and do my best to keep anyone from bothering you again.”

“A power well-aligned with myself, my task, and the Thread: emergence. It is a powerful force, and the ability to manipulate it is well worth sacrificing the redundant portions of Narration for.”

“That can be true without being a reason to forgo it. Magic and technology together are more options than only magic - every bit counts.”

Rebus wondered where he fit into the projection - he could see himself taking many paths in such a future.

'Nother Narrator. One of the older ones. He . . . tested me and asked why I hadn't made any characters.
