Haly hugged him back.

-

“I won’t, chill.”

She scooped him up like a baby and sprang into the air.

-

She was somewhat pleased to be recognized.

Bat smiled. “I… I appreciate that.”

She frowned. “That hardly seems a fitting Plotblade for such a task.”

Rose stared at Meat.

"Okay..." he hugged her suddenly.

Indeed it did.

It made an assortment of chittering/screeching noises and sped towards them.

Yeah. I'm sorry. I'll try not to do that from now on.

Nameless remained gone, although a paper did fall slowly to the ground where he had been standing.

If Rebus bothered to read it, the paper showed a list of ways Nameless could have vanished without Rebus deactivating the teleportation field.

  Reveal hidden contents

1: Using the Narration Rebus had given him to impersonate Rebus and hack the system.

2: Turning invisible and exiting at his leisure.

3: Using superspeed to exit faster than Rebus could percieve

4: Using Narration skills unknown to Rebus to teleport himself out in a way that bypassed the anti-teleport field

5: Instead of moving himself, simply turning incorporeal and moving the entire substance of the Thread in such a  way that he phased to his intended destination

6: Stepping into the fourth dimension

7: Time travel

8: Some kind of combination of the above.

Omen gestured to Rose. "You'll be giving her a trial today. Do you need a description of her character?"

"Think it has something to do with those artifacts the boss wants?" Jacob slowly moved along the rooftops, stepping carefully to avoid making any noise. "Headed your way now."

Omen nodded, an ominous look in his eyes. "Very well. Whenever the two of you are ready, we can begin."

"What, the protagonist shouldn't be the one to save the Thread from itself?" Nameless grinned. "I suppose Antagonist could work, but antagonists have an unfortunate tendency to lose, so... yeah."

"Worry not. Meat the Minstrel is a highly qualified trial-giver under select circumstances. His trial run went exceedingly well, and I hear the brave adventurer has recovered exceedingly well from his temporary bout of insanity."

"Maybe." Lane winced. His contact with Simon remained radio silent.

"I am." he nodded.

"A . . . poltergeist? How did he do that? What's a tether?"

@echo74

She sighed, then held up the police badge. "This is a tether. It Connects his spirit to the physical world, making him a poltergeist. A ghost that can move objects. If someone like me touches the tether, he loses his power and becomes a regular ghost. It's... complicated." Enrik scuttled back up onto her shoulder.

"Can I know what it is?" she asked, shoving the badge in her pocket. She bent down to pick up the Bachelor's degree.

Things started to be put back into their normal places around the room.

"I'd rather keep that to myself, if you don't mind . . ."

Nameless appeared next to Tam and Bat, whistling a merry tune.

Meat put his hand out, then remembered he was already being paid.
Rebus idly began to do some math involving matter-antimatter annihilation. This should alarm nobody, and certainly was not wishful thoughts of revenge.
He also turned to Balitan, who was probably still there. “I apologized for losing your orb, though we did get more out of it than he appears to think.”

"Any people around?"

Jacob stepped up behind Lane, holding a medpack. "Broken ribs?"

Balitan shrugged. "It's fine. I got my answer at least. And I assume you still want me as an assistant, so I'll be able to continue my research."

"Very well. I believe they are both ready." Omen touched Meat and he vanished into the world of dreams, where he could prepare his trial. Then he turned to face Cricket and Rose. "Are you prepared? Take my hands, and your trial will begin."

"Yeah." he groaned. "I just need bandages and some stanea."

He took Omen's hand, trying to ignore the wave of nausea that hit him.

It flew, very reluctantly.

The GPS beeped, telling him to go north. Eepy hung onto his neck.

He leaned forward over the Griffin's neck. "Come on, great stead. Can you work with me here?" He tried to steer it north and speed it up.

"That's alright," she said. "Is there something I could call you? A nickname, maybe?" She picked up some pencils and set them on the desk.

The shelf was propped upright, and books started to float back onto the shelves.

"You could call me Nick, I suppose," the voice said, amused.

"Is it because you're... invisible? Oh! Because you found the book in the Nick of time," She giggled, then shrugged. "I don't get it. Explain it to me."

"Thank you," she said. "It gets lonely, just me and Enrik."

Enrik was sniffing around for Haly's character.
