He led them down the hall to a wide, open room. The floor was one giant map, and more flanked the walls. 

He fished in his bag for a Nullite pebble, then dropped it, willing it toward the wall. It clattered against the wall before sliding down to the floor. 

She looked up and raised an eyebrow. 

“Excuse me?”

"Why do you tolerate me? When have I ever done anything mildly good for you?"

"I do, it's just... I mean, I try to be nice to everyone, but you're the only one who I feel like really returns the favor. Yeah, Tam and Bat are nice, but they're always leaving me alone and running off, but you... it's just nice to have somebody around for me."

He nodded, still playing his guitar, and began to sing. Not lyrics he had heard before, or even a tune, just words that came to him.

Aden looked at her like she was crazy. 

He sighed, finally stopping, still strumming the guitar before ultimately ending the song. He breathed heavily. Something had been different about that song. It was not like any he had ever sung before. It had seemed alive. He glanced at Rose, and smiled.

She jumped to her feet and tried to look utterly unconcerned. 

“There you are,” he said, giving Cricket a once-over, though the words were directed at Rose.

Her hands clenched and unclenched. 

The man raised his eyebrows in clear disapproval. “What do I want with my daughter?”

Daughter. Cricket sighed. This was Rose's father. He stepped back at first, but then everything Rose had ever told him about her parents came to him, and simmering rage poured through him. How dare he do what he had done to his own daughter?

"Why," he said quietly. "are you here?" Cricket closed his eyes, trying to control his rage.
