Shoe smiled and nodded to him gratefully.

How's it going, Bat?

"Not much," Tam replied to Beosta. "Just came to see how you guys were doing."

He blinked. Oh, right--- they had kind of made up. He still felt bad, though. Good. Hard, but good. Do you know anything about Ruia?

"Aw, thanks," she said, looking around. "I know we left the spirits around here somewhere... didn't we, Shoe?"

“Yeah. The agreement for groups like ours. Like a contract.”

He shrugged.

“I guess we should probably check on your brother, though.”

“Oh. I guess that makes sense. I also wanted to ask, have you ever hacked into something like this before? I don’t wanna get killed by something inside my body”

He shrugged and looked at Beosta.

. . . I don't think so. And yeah, they're around here somewhere . . .

"Not exactly like it," he admitted. "But very similar things."

Beosta yawned, then wrapped her arms around Shoe and rested her chin on his shoulder. Bat blushed.

"Why?" She asked. "Who's Ruia?"

Shoe smiled at her, and Tam gave Bat a weird look.

"This lady who took over Bat's homeland. We're not sure why, but . . . we're trying to free them."

His homeland? You mean those people who told Bat to steal Gaioh's soul?

Bat bit his cheek and nodded. Gaioh. How could he have forgotten about Gaioh?

"How is he, by the way?" Beosta asked.

"--He's good," Bat said quickly. "He... stayed to work in a restaurant owned by Cricket's friend."

Tam just smiled and nodded, a little surprised.

Bat! What are you doing?!

I don't wanna tell her, he whispered, looking off toward the sea and trying to keep his expression neutral. She... I don't want her to know... I should have at least been with him.

But we shouldn't just hide it from- well, either of them!

"Yes. I'll see you."

He looked down at his feet. I know... I just... I don't want to. He hugged himself.

Beosta frowned. "Bat... what happened?"

"One second," she said, tugging Bat a short distance away.

Look, we can't keep it from them. Do you want me to tell them, or do you want to tell them?

They entered a dark room with lights flashing everywhere. There were panels and machines and screens and other cool stuff.

"Sit down here," Aden said, pointing to a chair. He himself plopped into a rolly chair in front of a large monitor.

Cadewyn started climbing back up the cliff.

"Eepy, why did you bring me to see this dragon?"

"I just brought you to these dragons. I don't know," she said.

Ferron passed them and made it to the top before Cadewyn did.

"Ok." He kept climbing after Ferron, scrambling between the rocks.

He stopped about 15 feet from the top and found a ledge to stand in and lean back against the cliff wall.

"I'm bitter, Eepy. That's why I can't be a hero. I'm bitter with a lot of things. People, peoples, and humanity." He tipped his head back, looking at the sky far above him. "I can't let go. I say I don't like fighting people, and I don't. But at the same time, I love the thrill of a fight. And I always finish the fight I get in." he sighed, shoulders slumping. "A real hero would have compassion. Hell, even normal simply 'good' people have that."

“Not all the heroes,” she pointed out.

Yeah, I can. It's okay.

Shoe raised an eyebrow at Bat as they walked back over, but said nothing.

So . . . a bit-

She cleared her throat.

"A bit of bad news . . . you know how Gaioh had to go and get his soul stitched back on? Well . . ."

She twiddled with her fingers.

"It didn't exactly . . . last. I'm sorry."

He smiled at her, and set off towards the north, hiking through the bramble till they arrived at a small village. In the center was a massive house, that was clearly the inn. Cricket walked in, sitting down at the bar. The bartender smiled at them. "Whatwouldyalike?" he asked in one breath.

“O-Okay. Yeah.”

"Well, regardless, I'm practically invincible, so I wouldn't recommend fighting me."

Beosta stared at her. “It… what do you mean? He’s… he’s not… dead?”

Bat stared at his feet. “…he’s dead,” he whispered. “I… I’m so sorry.”

She stared at him instead.

Aden typed a couple things in the computer. Several small metal plates descended to hover around Starlight.

”Caramel brichotte, please,” Rose said. “If you have that.”

Ana turned away, too, toward the window.

Peter, however, approached Achilles. “You lay one finger on her, I’ll kill you,” he informed him quietly. It didn’t sound antagonizing, necessarily, but it was far from friendly.
