She cocked her head. What do you mean?

He shrugged. "I thought you'd been stuck here for months. Talk about cabin fever."

She nodded.

So why are you two trying to get home? Where were you before?

"We were trying to get out of Ad'Leid.--The school for heroes. Went to a friend's place for a while, but they've got three kids, and we were in the way. Ana didn't want to leave, and... well, we had a fight. Kaboom. Stranded out in the woods. We were lucky to have found you; the last time we got stranded in the woods, a panther almost killed her and her lousy boyfriend."

Tam looked a little alarmed.

Oh my.

She kinda liked this story. It was interesting.

“I’m gonna be fine.”

Aden shook his head. “Not a bit.”

“Tam.”

Well…

”…being helpless,” she whispered.

"I... feel that. In a different way, though. Sometimes our best is simply not good enough." he said, hugging her. "Do you want protection? I am an Enuller, after all."

'Bout two days, give or take. Originally it was just Bat, Cricket, Rose, and myself, but then Elliot what's-his-face showed up- she jabbed her thumb at the teenager playing the drums in the background, -you two are here, now, and the other new girl by the front door. Oh, and Val, I suppose. Not really sure where he came from.

39 minutes ago, Kajsa said:

"Thanks," Ana said half-heartedly, glancing toward the window before forcing herself to sit down. "How long have you been here?"

"I met Cricket and Rose while they were fighting a monster." Val said cheerfully. "I decided to stick around because you guys seem like good adventurers. Also because I haven't ever met a Narrator before."

“Typically I’d agree, and I do have some precautions in place. But Ennullers can go rogue, or people can be less threatening than anticipated.” Rebus’s core is pulled from his body, touching the sphere, as the other copy of Rebus watches from behind the force field with Balitan.

Rebus's core and the sphere met with a flash of light, and in the next instant a man stood inside the forcefield. Well, part of a man. His lower jaw and and half of his face was missing, as was one of his legs and half of his torso. Despite this he stood easily on one leg, and no blood poured out from the exposed internals where his flesh ended. The man's blue eyes locked onto the copy of Rebus standing outside the force field, and a harsh, ragged voice forced its way into his mind.

Huh. Okay- you've really never met a Narrator before?

"Well, not really. It's kind of weird. I have two sets of memories. One of them is normal, being born, going to school, getting a job, burning alive in an orphanage. The other one is... weird. It's all fuzzy, and even what I can remember sort-of clearly feels like a dream. But in those memories, the earliest ones that are clear at least, I met a guy who called himself Nameless. He said he was a Narrator, and I think he might've made me. That me at least, not sure about the other one."

Rebus nodded, and that copy did the same as the previous, a new copy coming in through another door and setting up another force field. I will warn you, this power can be revoked if you attack me. I’ve learned from my rabbit-related mistakes.

Burning- actually, nevermind.

She sighed.

Look,Val . . . Narrators . . . don't make people. Or at least, they usually don't. You were probably created directly by an Author, not one of us.

A man on a flying whale passes overhead in a shower of snow, and shouts to them through the cabin. “The old ones did be a’create’n characters! Just you new Narrate-lubbers don’t do that kind of thing!”

This core was absorbed into the figure's chest in another flash of light. This time, the figure was complete, although his body was slightly transparent in parts.

You are much more careful than she was. the voice was calmer now, but still. Giving me only these small portions of your power. In the spirit of fairness, I should give you a warning: give me too much more power and I'll be able to incorporate all of it forcibly.

Val blinked. "Oh, you're a new Narrator? That... would explain a lot." He facepalmed. "So when I was asking if you'd made any characters earlier, you had no idea what I was talking about?"

She grinned and blushed ever so slightly. Guess not. To be fair, from what I've heard, the Thread has deviated a lot from what it used to be over the past thousand pages or so.

"Yeah, I guess so." Val shrugged. "I take it you don't really want to make characters?"

"It was... well, it was inhumane. Unethical, if you will. They put us through a bunch of staged situations, except we didn't actually know any of them were staged, and people always got hurt. Example: Chan, Reanne, and Ana all got kidnapped when they were visiting Seoul, dragged to some dungeon in the middle of nowhere, and tortured for several days. I rescued them when a different rescue attempt failed," he boasted. "Nasty stuff."

Yikes. No wonder you left.

He nodded solemnly. "That was one of the worse tests, but a lot of them were violent and all of them were dangerous."

"Interesting. That's not at all what the Narrators I've heard about do." Val shrugged. "I guess you shouldn't trust the stories."

Rebus nods to the figure. “Ah. I’d suspected this would happen, though I admit I forgot about the duel. I’m a fan of your work, as I mentioned to Balitan here.” He smiled, then winked. “As for caution, I learned my lesson after feeding that rabbit Plotblades. Though I don’t have access to any Prismite not tied to me, so I have little choice.”
