The sphere managed not to Ennull the hand, but it still has an immense positive charge and is continually absorbing electrons. It would have acted like a strong acid if touched by someone mundane, but perhaps Ennullers can avoid such things. 

“You can detect your soul? I really have been doing this with one hand tied behind my back, haven’t I?” Rebus furrowed his brow. “The sphere is shut down completely, then. I’m still not sure how that’s possible, but I want to try something with it and I can’t risk accidentally altering the entire sample. How likely would chipping a piece off of it be to destroy it, do you think?” 

The ennuller was fortunately able to project a field that protected him from the Ennulling 'radiation'.

Subversion sighed deeply. "I... don't want to. It feels wrong, but... that's all just irrational, right? No reason to care, and all that." She pressed a hand to one side of her face. "It's just... I should've given the traveler my entire conscience, huh?" She looked up at the ennuller. "Go ahead. But... could you maybe save her memories? In case it turns out that this is all some plot where people are erased from existence in a temporary fashion?"

Irie sighed. She'd have to do something about this when they got there.

She was quiet for a moment.

Because everything is always out of my control, that's why. I have all this power, and yet . . . it's so useless all the time. So many people now can just negate whatever I do, or aren't affected but it . . . and it just . . . it felt . . . good to have control over something I didn't have control over before. REALLY good.

Rose had left after arguing with Tam. 

She ran for several minutes before she realized that if Tam really wanted to hurt her, distance wouldn’t make a difference. She stopped by a tree and leaned against it, closing her eyes and desperately trying to stop trembling. Bat wouldn’t let anything happen to her. Cricket probably wouldn’t either— though she didn’t understand him as well yet.

Maybe it was cruel. Maybe she shouldn't have done that, but . . . it'd felt so good.

She'd never felt like that before. After a lifetime of being slapped around by everyone else . . . she'd actually felt powerful. Like she had control over something.

She didn't respond.
