"What?"

“Try. Be a hero now. That’s a good purpose.”

He frowned at her. "Just thinking. What did you ever do with that Plotblade, anyway?" he said, changing the subject quickly.

She sighed. “Fed it to a dumb rabbit to keep him from eating me.”

"How? What is a hero Eepy? They are just the men history lauds for winning, or doing what the winners saw as right." He tipped his head back, looking through the leaves at the purple sunset sky. "Uffern, there are people who think I'm a hero. There are those who think I am a monster, the demon king himself." He looked down again, and whispered, "And some who think me ruined. A good person they once knew twisted and crushed by the world."

I… I don’t know if I should be asking this… it’s probably not fair. But… I was wondering if you could maybe…

Actually, maybe not.

How do I help her?

"No, it's absolutely fair," said a voice right next to his ear.

Atlas looked at the scribe. “Hey Drin, is there other planets… ARE THERE ALIENS? CAN I MEET THEM?” @SpiritOfWrath

“Well… maybe your purpose could be being a real hero. Trying.” She hopped off his head and wrapped around his shoulders.

He jumped. Oh, gosh, she’d actually answered.

“R- uh… well,  I… I just wanna know how to help her.”

Cadewyn sat in silence for a minute. "...Maybe. We'll see." H

He shook himself out of his reverie. "Anyway. Let's sleep, and tomorrow we'll find a stream or pond or something. I need to wash my clothes and myself." He curled up in the crown of the tree. "...Thank you, Eepy. For staying."

"Oh, calm down," the voice said.

There was a sound like folding paper, and a figure suddenly stood in front of him. It was in the shape of a person, but looked as if it had been folded out of a piece of notebook paper, with blue lines along the body and clothing, and a punched-out hole where the right eye should be. Other than that, there were no defining features on the face.

"If your Author can show herself to you as a dragon, I certainly want a turn to be dramatic," she said, amused.

"As for Tam . . . it's complicated."

“Yes. I am the Ghost, and I lead it.”

"Oh, lovely!" Sequence glanced around the ruined castle with a slight frown, looking for some sort of intact furniture. Unable to find any, she waved her hand and four chairs along with a small coffee table were fashioned from the rubble. Sequence placed her tea basket on the table and sat, gesturing for the Ghost to do the same.

"Wonderful to meet you, Ghost. Will the other members of your Machination be joining us?"

“Like you,” she chirped, curling up as well.

" Huh. Ok. Maybe not the best choice, but ok." He closed his eyes and drifted to sleep, Eepy curled up on top of him.

And he slept into a landscape of nightmares.

So! You can do the nightmares if you want, if you want me to I will, if we want to gloss over them that's fine too, just let me know.

She snorted.

"I'm not you to help her, you are. This is not something I can -or rather something I shouldn't- intervene in. I can certainly help you, however."

“Perhaps. What do you need?” The standing shadowy figure ignores the furniture, as the Ghost is actually sitting down.

Sure, I can!

He found himself in a beautiful town under a perfect blue sky.

"You can help her. And you already are, actually. Well, today you already are."

She created a little table and sat them both down on opposite sides.

"What do you want to know?"

He swallowed, suddenly feeling really nervous.

"I... I just wanna know how to help her."

"What?" He looked around. "No. No I've never been here. What is this!?"

A woman passing by smiled at him. "Welcome. Come inside."

She nodded.

"I suppose the best advice I can give you is just . . . to be there for her. She's had a rough few months- everything's just been building up, and she's not really sure how to deal with it. Try to find a way to make her feel safe- that's something that she's lacked for a while now, and it's going to be hard for her to get over all this if she doesn't feel secure. Oh, and don't try to make her talk about it. She'll open up about it when she feels ready. Trying to force her will just make her want to talk about it less."

"Yes?"

An image flashed of someone he cared about in a headlock, a knife to their throat.

She smiled wider. "I said come inside."

He dropped his head into his hands, squeezing his eyes shut.

"Okay," he whispered.

He felt heavy, for some reason.
