Bat? she asked quietly, sounding agitated and somewhat frightened. Do- do you have anything that might help with panic attacks?

No idea; woods is all I get. But Ruia is there, and my networking may pay off yet.

Woods . . . I can work with that.

Rebel nods. "I'll find power for you, defeat and siphon from Rebus, and we'll do great things. Right now, though, I need to stay alive. Thus, I need to either reach Onyx's Realm or find Nullite."

The scepter approved of this. Yes, let us hide. We shall gather strength in the shadows, and draw in great power.

He nodded and shifted to reach into his bag. He pulled out a bottle of small white pills. "How-- how panicky?"

@Dragonheir

Woods is good, Bat agreed.

"That's good! They'd be distracted..."

"We should wait, I think. They might actually kill each other."

"Good. Can you travel there another way, or at least fake doing so? If we reveal our cards Malevolence counters them. In fact, can you three each give me a vague asset? Know what it is but hide it and don't think about it as you give it to me. I'll do the same."

Rebel nods, lying down to rest as nanomachines plate his cave with gold. His clothes, too, are woven with gold, the lights turning a bright yellow.

He pulled away just enough to hand her two pills. That should be enough.

Bat sighed, voice shuddering.

Bat hesitated. "I... don't really have anything..."

Tam was a little confused.

What sort of asset?

She stepped away for a moment and downed them, then sat on the ground and stared at the hole in the warehouse floor.

Thanks.

Are you okay?

The gold glimmers with a sinister light as Rebus rests.

A massive rabbit rips its way through reality and lands in front of Rebus. Its eyes are pits opening into an endless void of darkness.

I have eaten all that I can eat. Give me more.

Bat turned away. He wasn't going to cry. He wasn't going to...

"I'm fine." His voice broke, though, and he dug around in his bag. There had to be something... debbiemoss with numbing, maybe...

Rebel notices, but doesn't particularly care.

Rebus blinks, wondering if he should have thought the rabbit plan through. "I will give you something more, but first you must do something for me. Otherwise you will eat and eat until there is nothing left." Then his Author goes to sleep, freezing him - and hopefully the rabbit - in time.

Bat stared at it, then started laughing. This was all so absurd. A box--- a bunny--- a hole in a warehouse in the middle of nowhere--- Cricket gone, captured, dead.

Ridiculous.

He began to cry through his laughter. The box dropped to the floor--- Bat needed both his arms to hug himself tightly, standing and staring down at the stars through the hole. His chest shuddered, and everything blurred together.

"He's fine," he whispered to himself, but the words felt so empty and small and... and... useless.

Tam ignored it for the moment.

Bat, she said gently, come over here.

The stars were so empty, so so so so empty. How could he have ever thought they were beautiful? No, no, they were heartless and unconcerned.

Or maybe the problem was with him. Maybe they were all just meaningless bugs hopping from place to place and doing random stuff and killing each other and hugging each other and WHO REALLY CARED ANYWAY?

He blinked.

Did you say something?

She was even more concerned now, as was evident from her expression.

Standing and taking his hand, she led him to a more secluded part of the warehouse and sat him down on the floor, then sat down across from him.

Bat, she said, taking up his hands in her own once they'd been situated, can you tell me what you're thinking about? What's going through your head right now?

I... I don't know.

He didn't know. What had he been thinking about?

Bugs, he remembered. Cute little bugs with six legs and long antennae....... or maybe crickets.......................

Something twisted painfully inside her.

Okay . . . what else? Can you think of anything?

He stared at the window up above her head, the dusty opaque window.

It's so empty out there.

Blue eyes, shoulder-length light blonde hair (ik that looks kinda like me but I needed her to look similar to Shoe, okay? 😂), white shirt, those tan pants that I can never remember how to spell, and a thin black jacket that's usually open.

She looked at him sadly.

Can you tell me if there's anything else going through your head right now?

He felt very blank at the moment, actually.

Blank and alone and spinning, for some reason. He felt spinning.

This was somebody's fault, wasn't it? He knew that dimly, in the back of his mind, but he couldn't quite recall whose. Something  about seeing Tam in front of him warned him not to try.

Oh well. It was probably his fault anyway. It usually was.

Spinning... in the stars... he wanted to go back out of the warehouse and drift away and fill up the stars with his consciousness. Make them understand. Maybe then they could cry, too.

Another single tear slid down his cheek. He stood, pulling Tam to her feet. "I wanna fill up the stars."

"Come on." He tugged her toward the doors. "We have to make them see."

If he wasn't with them--- if THEY weren't with them--- the stars wouldn't understand. They'd just be stars, background, chatting, lonely, together and apart so so far apart but if he could just make them understand how important it was and how much it was maybe they'd be real and talk to him or cry or help or bring Cricket back, maybe. Maybe they'd bring Cricket back, and then Tam wouldn't have to know if he was dead or not because he was dead and he didn't know how he knew that but a deep certainty inside him wouldn't let him forget but he didn't want Tam to know she already had enough to worry about but he forgot what, just knew that it was very very important and shaking and hard and she needed Cricket back and he needed Cricket back too because Cricket was his friend and if he couldn't help Cricket what good was he anyway?

holy crap, haly

He sounded . . . broken. Not in an emotional kind of way, but in a literal, mental kind of way. Something was very, very wrong, and Tam didn't know what it was.

"Where are we going?" she whispered dismally as she followed him. She wasn't really sure what else to do.

He stopped, staring at the doorway.

"I don't know."

And with those words, everything he'd been thinking clunked like rocks in his skull. He was being stupid.

He sat down on the ground, right where they were, and stared at the dirt.

"Why did I let him take Cricket?"
