Oh. Thanks.

She deflated further.

. . . No. I didn't make the copy functional, though . . . it's only a husk. What do you think Malan will do with it?

She hugged him back, feeling . . . lost.

Bat pulled away… mostly. He grabbed her hand, needing something to hold onto.

“So what do we do?” He whispered. “We… we don’t even know where to go.”

DONT TELL HER. DONT.

Bat scowled at him.

Rebus shakes his head. “Later, perhaps. We have bigger problems.”

Rebus sighs. “Of course not. I believe Malan will do the same thing I did with the robot Ennuller, except with more direction and control. Do you have enough of a link to contaminate the Narration with ash?”

Rebel smiles. “I do like wonders… What sort of power do we need?”

Oh? came Malan's voice, directly into his head. So it was a ruse? We will see, my friend, we will see. Bring him to my location. He sent him a thought of a place. Then, we will see if you have truly achieved such a feat. I must admit, if you managed this, then you played them masterfully.

Very well. Malevolence grabbed the Narration container, then looked at the floor in front of him with an evil grin. There lay Cricket's body, burned and charred until it was barely recognizable. I will come. He entered the proper coordinates in his teleporter, then brought himself, Cricket's corpse, and the Narration to Malan.

Narration... it is good. Any power will do. But Plotblades... they are best of all. I can link to them. Draw on their power. Seek out the wielders of Plotblades. Defeat them. Then you will see wonders.

She tried.

"I don't think so . . . do you know where Malevolence went?"

"He . . . didn't come back when I . . . he's gotta be somewhere, right?" Her voice shook.

“He is. He is.” He took a deep breath and squeezed his eyes shut. “We gotta… we gotta… ROSE!” His eyes snapped open. “ROSE, YOU HEAL PEOPLE NOW, RIGHT?”

She blinked. “Not if he’s dead.”

They appeared in a large grassy clearing, littered with stones, surrounded by thick trees on all sides.

Malan stood on the outskirts of the trees, arms crossed, studying Malevolence, and Cricket's corpse. "Do you know why I bothered to create such a weapon as Cricket?" he asked him conversationally.

"He was an experiment. I sought to make myself an ideal being, and have gone quite far in that pursuit of power. I, then, decided to make myself an Enuller, by merging my soul with another. Having performed several experiments, Cricket, and only Cricket, survived. Interested to see how his powers would interact, I foolishly let him live. When I realized my error, and tried to recover him, I failed to find him. However, I, using what I had learned, repeated that experiment on myself, subjecting and merging six Enullers to my soul, made myself an Enuller, beyond even the most powerful."

Malevolence's eyes widened slightly. "I... see. Incredible. Could you... repeat this process?" He looked down at Cricket's body. "If a weakling like him could survive, I am certain I would be able to."

A sound like falling sand began, softly crescendoing louder and louder. Ruia appeared in a burst of fine ash, but she wore black hair, a youthful face, and an elegant gown.

“In light of this, I have a proposal.”

"Perhaps.  I question, however, your loyalty." he said softly, and everything turned shades of gray, as all powers were stripped away. "Let us see the true fighter you are, Love." he sneered. "Come at me."

Her powers faded as she arrived. Malan turned, pulling out a handgun. "Who are you?"

Malevolence frowned at the nickname, but didn't react in too much fear. "Very well. I suspect my technology will not work here?" He drew a Nullite sword. "I have come prepared for such a scenario. If you wish to test me, then I will pass that test." He dashed forward, sword swinging for Malan's throat.

Malan moved suddenly, blurring as he moved several times faster than a human should be able to. He appeared behind Malevolence, throwing him down, and pointing the handgun at his head.
