. . . Okay, she said softly. Thank you.

Was . . . it just her, or was it getting colder?

A violent shiver ran through her body, and she continued to shake after that.

Why . . .

Just now, Ookla the Irreplaceable said:

He sighed, throwing back his head and swallowing it.

Alright.

Then, a moment later. Tam? Are you... shaking?

Bat was getting really scared now. He pulled out an entire handful of worms. “Tam?”

F-fine. Just c-cold again.

HAH 😂

"No, no more of- of those," she held up her hands, "please. I'm o-okay."

Tam! Something's wrong. You've taking way too many.. worms already. Do you want to see Mother Entreri? She's a skilled healer.

I know something's wrong! I'm j-just cold though. It's ok-kay.

She kneeled on the ground and started setting up her little makeshift bed with trembling hands.

He stood up to pace. “No. No, this isn’t normal.” Stop hyperventilating, Bat told himself sternly. Stop right now. “Something is seriously wrong.”

And he couldn’t fix it.

The first real friend hed ever had in the world was PROBABLY DYING, and he couldn’t fix it.

“There’s gotta be a connection,” he decided aloud. “Something’s happening. You get cold every time you… you…”

I don’t know.

What could possibly even BE wrong? She was a Narrator, akin to a god. And yet here she was, freezing, unable to unnarrate her ailments…

But her blood was normal…

Think harder, you idiot. You’re a medic. There’s an answer here.

“It’s not… it couldn’t be something mental,” he checked.

She shrugged and laid down. "I have no id-dea."

He nodded, and sat against the wall, trying to get into a comfortable position. "Look, let's just rest. We can deal with everything tomorrow."

“What else could it be?” Bat realized. “If it were anything else, you would have been able to Narrate it away— or there would be traces of Nullite or other substance in your blood— especially if it was affecting you much.”

Great. He was NOT a therapist.

He pulled out a notebook and pencil anyway and sat down in front of her. “Cricket, come here. Tan, sit down.”

”I am NOT waiting until the problem gets worse. I’m not letting her die.”

He closed his eyes. "Neither am I. Trust me, if they were people I would be willing to trade my soul for just to let them live, they're in this room. But sometimes, all we can do is wait. Just cause I'm not dealing with the poison that's killing me right now doesn't mean I won't later."

“She just keeps getting worse! What in the world would make you think waiting is a solution at all?”

He took a breath. “I’m sorry. I… didn’t mean to get heated. Can we please just try for a minute?”

"I don't know!" she cried desperately.

Yes stirred on the other side of the barn.

"I was fine yesterday . . ." she said more quietly.

“I know. But that was yesterday. Okay— first, tell me what happened with Stone as you see it. You can be vague, if you want.”

"Um . . . well . . . Stone showed up back in the ocean and threatened to kill you, which had me really worried . . . a-and then when we all went to the forest and fought it was really chaotic and I panicked when he Nullified me both times and I felt really sick and dizzy and then I was panicking when he shot you and stabbed Cricket and- and . . . and then I woke up and Cricket was sitting next to me . . ."
