Beosta, he complained, don't do that to yourself!

She paused. “I mean… been through worse. You know.”

She reached up and ran her fingers through her hair.

He smiled. You said you were looking for someone? What is their name?

“…Ciara, I think?”

Snapa-rapa

Shoe let go of her. What do you mean, you've done worse? His mind flashed to the note in his pocket.

“I said I’d been through worse! That’s what I meant!” She twisted her hair hard enough that several strands broke and came away with her fingers.

What purpose do you have with her? You are not her family, surely?

Shoe narrowed his eyes. I don't think so. He pointed to her hand, You keep doing that thing with your hair when you're nervous, Beosta. I'm not exactly inclined to trust you when you keep doing it. He looked her dead in the eyes, Is there something you should talk about?

Tull looked to the guide, frowning at her. “Can you take us?”

Ista stared at her, dumbfounded at the strange speech, the absence of sound. “Wow. What’s that not noise you are making?”

am I understanding correctly ennuller speech? (Also, the guide was ennuller, right?)

You must find your own way. It will be difficult; time has made this land only harsher. The peace of dreams will not be easy to find.

I find that difficult to believe, considering that she is dead.

It's been interesting to see how my emotional state affects the tone of my writing.

Shoe, frustrated and angry because she was clearly nervous, started to pull the note out of his pocket as proof.

But then he looked up and saw her crying, and all the fight went out of him. He stared at her face for a moment before looking down at the crumpled note in his fist.

What was he doing? This was everything he hated about how other people treated him; they never took time to consider how he was feeling, they never seemed to care how their questions affected him. He hated it when they asked why he couldn't talk, the way they spoke when they asked about his past. His family. People didn't tell you you raw, personal, emotional things when you angrily confronted them, they told you those things when they trusted you. He should know that better than anyone, especially considering how the events of the past few days had gone for him.

Idiot. Hypocrite.

Why was he even doing this?

Skies, what is WRONG with me?

The note fell from his hand and bounced along the ground. His eyes shifted to Beosta's with a pleading, apologetic look. I'm so sorry, he thought, though she couldn't hear him.

I'll get to your response in a bit, Xino. 😋

Ista pulled out a pad and a pen, and made notes on it, then looked up at the Ennuller. “Can you explain this process? Are you forming the Silence with anything like a windpipe, or are you using any magical influence to create it? And if so, is the influence on our minds, or is it actually affecting the world around us? And what from would this not-energy take? Usually the opposite of energy is just the same as the actual energy, only the negative vector.” Ista looked up expectantly, ready to write.

Tull groaned as the guide answered. “Do you have any tips? Sequence here described you as a guide.”

Lol. My guy, I thought way too hard about that same thing the other day.

Like LITERALLY THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ANTI-SOUND YOU CAN'T MANIPULATE SILENCE IT IS THE ABSENCE OF VIBRATIONS IN THE AIR

*sigh*

Okay I'm done with that. For now.

That paper… was that her—

It didn’t matter. Not a bit. It didn’t matter.

Still, she felt panic rising in her throat, and she rubbed the ends of her hair again. It’s not like that. You’re not like that. See?

She looked up to meet his eyes, feeling absolutely cornered. But she couldn’t… she couldn’t…

Chasms, they really did look similar. Her stomach twisted with nausea, which she did her best to swallow down.

Maybe Roth was right. Maybe some deep corner of her mind wanted to prove that she wasn’t………

mine influences my writing too and it’s crazy sometimes

Honestly tho

Shoe should . . . he . . . oh SCUD.

He had no idea what to do.

Oh, he was such a terrible friend! All day he'd only been thinking about himself. So selfish.

He . . . he should apologize. Yeah, that seemed like a good place to start.

He shakily got the pad out and started to write, I'm sorry.

But . . . no, that wasn't nearly good enough. He scratched it out, angry at himself.

I am so, so sorry, he wrote instead. I don't know what's wrong with me. I shouldn't have done that; shouldn't have said those things . . .

Your past -whatever happened- is yours to know, not mine. I've been so selfish all day, I should have listened to you better and actually thought about what I was doing, and how it would affect you before I went ahead and did it. I've been so thoughtless; you have your own battles you're fighting, and I need to be more considerate of that. I've only known you for a few days, but I don't want to lose this relationship that we have with each other.

I'm sorry.

He read through what he'd written five times before he finally turned it around for Beosta to see.

I would be happy to explain, said the guide, seeming to perk up slightly. You see...

She froze.

You clearly have not read Terry Pratchett :P

Ista nodded. “And how would you describe this forgetfulness? Is it a gap in your memory, a fact at the tip of the tongue… etc. Alternatively, are you just stepping lightly around Erif and Nogard like most people seem to do?”

Tull threw up his arms. “Where might we find one? Would you stop me if I just… Narrate one into existence?”

Spoiler

hot bloody dang they sure are

Beosta started crying.

She didn't want to--- she hated crying. It made her eyes sting and get all red and puffy, and it made her look weak or guilty and she didn't want people to see her that way. She fought it as much as she could--- turned away, swallowed, rubbed her eyes so hard she felt sure her eyelids would come off--- but she couldn't stop bawling like a little kid.

"No, it's my fault." She took a shuddering breath--- stupid tears; they made it hard to breathe and talk. "I've been... selfisher."

And she really had, hadn't she? Had she only gotten close to him to make herself feel good?

And if so, was it because of his eyes or his hair?

Or...

Oh, chasms, was it both?

Her sobs redoubled. The shaking hurt and her face hurt and her scudding soul hurt.

"I think--- he said something," she managed, pointing to the man at the desk, then redegenerated back into desperately trying to make herself stop sobbing.

I- I-

The ends of her hair began to fuzz into static.

My name, she said, her voice bewildered. Where is my name? Her voice gained an edge of panic. WHERE IS MY NAME?

Just now, SpiritOfWrath said:

The guide shuddered, head twitching towards Tull in an instant. No- You must- I could not stop-

Then she was staring away from them, off into the distance.

The Dark One, she said, her voice flat. He has taken my name.

Many things happened at once.

A birdlike creature with tattered wings and no eyes swooped down on the party, letting out a screech that carried with it a weariness.

Black tendrils rose up from the ground and attached themselves to Tull, draining away his Narrative power.

The guide flickered out of existence, then reappeared.

Greetings, newcomers... she began, then frowned. Wait.
