I think that the Melody tied to the tree is an illusion, but Melody is at the scene somewhere.

Okay! Also, I think Melody is gagged.

Melody looked around as if to ascertain the direction from which the voice came. She seemed scared, and she pulled farther back against the tree. She tried to speak, but couldn't and soon gave up on talking.

Should 'Melody' know about and tell you about the ambush, if there is an ambush? Is there an ambush? I think there's an ambush, but 'Melody' will pretend not to know.

"Oh, thank goodness you guys are here! I don't know what she was planning to do to me, but it would have been nasty! Just, don't do anything stupid to get me back. She wants your powers, X!"

"Is this true?" he asked quietly.

"Got that straight," snarked Y. "Can't stand another moment on this jumbled mess of a world."

X's avatar sighed.

"Very well," he said. "Release the girl. I will let you take whatever power from me you desire."

Then she runs over to X and yells back at Y, "Ha! You're not getting X's powers today!"

Melody stopped teleporting and found herself back next to Y. "What?" she yelled, then ran over to stand by X's avatar again.

"The deal is accepted," hisses Y in triumph. "Let the price be paid."

X's avatar nods once, solemnly.

He takes Melody's hand in his and gives her a confident smile. His hand tingles, and Melody can feel the power flowing into her.

"Hold onto it for me," he murmurs, and goes to face Y.
