[OB] Szeth and division

If Szeth trained with all 10 surges, why didn't he react when Nalan said that he will come and train him in division? Shouldn't he already know how to use division?

LOL. But yeah, actually belonging to the order seems a little bit different that just wielding the Honorblade, as we learned between Szeth and Kaladin. The Herald himself, who had division before Skybreakers were even a thing, probably has some good tricks up his sleeve.

True, but I think I remember a WoB saying the heralds didn't get the resonances for some reason.  Plus I think it's generally accepted that the Skybreaker resonance is the ability determine someone's guilt or innocence.  Regardless, I definitely think Nale would have some useful for tips for Szeth as he would only have been able to practice division using Chana's honorblade since Nale had his.  There are probably some useful techniques when combining division with gravitation that he wouldn't have been able to practice.

Good question! The unique abilities have more to do with the powers interacting, same as how twinborn will often manifest some odd side effects of the powers interacting. But there are limitations. For example, Jezrien didn't actually have any squires, as none of the Heralds did.

It's got to do with the interaction of the powers, not the method of obtaining them. Theoretically, I could get the Stoneward Resonance by becoming a Stoneward, by using Taln's Honorblade, or by granting myself Tension and Cohesion via Hemalurgic Spikes.

Nale had gotten his Honorblade presumably before Szeth's time. This means Szeth likely trained with all Honorblades except the Skybreaker and Stoneward one. Meaning, some help on figuring out division for the Skybreakers will likely be nice for him. Szeth is probably familiar with Division via the Dustbringer Honorblade, which may be different from the Skybreaker use.

In this particular case it wouldn't matter since Nale was both Herald and Member of the order.

I don't think this is the case. I don't have the reference now, but I seem to remember Szeth somewhere in TWoK or WoR musing on the 8 other honor blades back in Shinovar. Then it becomes news at some point that one of them had been stolen. I think this is when Nale got his back.

Now, I may very well be imagining ALL of that, it's happened before, so...Anyone who has a better memory than me...

No honorblade was ever stolen from the Shin, it was a lie T made up on the spot so Szeth wouldn't kill him by realizing he wasn't Truthless. In that interlude Szeth actually asks about "one of the other seven", implying the Shin already had just 7 Honorblades.
