Argel he/him Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 This has probably come up before but it's not easy to search on.... Adolin said with a nod. “Stick to women your own age.” Wit grinned. “Well, that might be a little harder. I think there’s only one of those around these parts, and she and I never did get along.” Sanderson, Brandon (2014-03-04). Words of Radiance (The Stormlight Archive, Book 2) (p. 641). Tom Doherty Associates. Kindle Edition. So what is the concensus on who Wit is referring to? Cultivation? Nightwatcher? Khriss? One of the Ghostbloods? Jasnah? I'm guessing Cultivation, though do we have any idea why they may not get a long (well, beyond his charming personality)? If the Nightwatcher is of the Old Magic, then she could fit as well.

Argel he/him Posted April 10, 2016 Author Posted April 10, 2016 Isn't Khriss close to the same age (in the grand scheme of things)? And the Old Magic could predate the shattering, so do we have any idea how long Nightwatcher has been around? Likely more recent, but are we just assuming that?
hoidhunter he/him Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 I assume Cultivation...but...that's just an assumption. I'm sorry that I don't have anything else to add. But I also don't think there is any other relevant info that could be used to determine exactly who he is referring to. 1

Khriss is not even close to preshattering, not by thousands of years. The Nightwatcher, who is the only source of the old magic, is related to cultivation which is the result of the shattering, so it wasn't around when hoid was born. 2
Argel he/him Posted April 10, 2016 Author Posted April 10, 2016 Oh, I always thought the Old Magic was pre-shattering, natural magic on Roshar. Anyway, considering how little we have seen of Cultivation, maybe she doesn't get along well with anyone.... Anyway, thanks! I was re-reading that section, and that quote stood out to me more this time, so thought I would ask.
Yata he/him Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 It have to be Cultivation. She is as old as Hoid, and if more than one being may be the target of that sentence. Hoid would not use "there only one..." 3
kenod Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Aren't there other female shards? According to the coppermind Edgli (Endowment) and Aona (Devotion) were both female. Although, Aona is dead and Edgli's status is unknown.

Although, Aona is dead and Edgli's status is unknown. Yes, but they aren't "around these parts," presumably Roshar. Although Adolin probably thinks Wit means the Shattered Plains.
AerionBFII he/him Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 It's Cultivation!! Khriss is about but Hoids a lot older than her.
DSC01 he/him Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 We really don't know if Khriss is on the planet during the time period of the story. Nazh definitely is, but we don't know enough about how they operate as a team to say whether or not this means that she is certainly on-planet too. I'd say probably--it seems like she probably sets up shop to do her research somewhere, then sends Nazh out to do adventuring for her--but who knows?
natc Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Yes, but they aren't "around these parts," presumably Roshar. Although Adolin probably thinks Wit means the Shattered Plains. Well, as long as you're on the right planet technically a small percentage of the shard is always there . . . they might not be watching though.
Nyali she/her Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that there have never been any shards on Roshar other than the three we know about, and only one of them has a female vessel (or whatever the right term is for someone who takes up a Shard of Adonalsium) - Cultivation. That's been WoBed.
ZenBossanova Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Isn't there a WoB that technically, all the shards have been on Roshar?
Nyali she/her Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Isn't there a WoB that technically, all the shards have been on Roshar? I thought the WoB was that there are only three shards that have been to Roshar, Honor, Cultivation, and Odium?
Vander Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Isn't there a WoB that technically, all the shards have been on Roshar? Even if there was (And I'm not sure there is), note the word "technically". It could be referring to Adonalsium itself, which is technically all the shards and (presumably) had a part in making Roshar, and was as such on it at some point.
