It is a dim night. Not dark or stormy, the moon lights up the scenery outside your window quite well, but you are exhausted after a long day. You open a secure private browser, the process taking an irritating amount of time, and log onto a secret forum, BlackWeb. Nothing much has happened since you last visited, except a user you don’t recognize, anonymous account 228B22, has posted a new thread.

”Horror. It has a bad reputation, like metal or certain corners of the internet, but there are certainly pieces of art from the genre that are worth your time in some sort of way. What media from the horror genre abroad has struck you, whether good or bad, profound or shallow, terrifying or unsettling? Discuss.”

Cooper opened his browser on his phone. What better place to be on BlackWeb than in an empty, dark park? He sat down on a rusty old bench, looked at the long shut down fountain beside him, and clicked on the hidden bookmark taking him to the secret forum

Brushing her hair aside, a petite girl dressed in black tapped furiously at her phone. 

"idk who you are" she typed out, "but there are definitely horror elements that make a good story." She continued this train of thought into her mind, before continuing to type away. "Most horror games and stories tend to be from a first person POV, but the thing that does it best has to be Réalisez-Moi." 

She glanced it over once again, then posted it. Her username, Bellstrum, displayed next to the forum post in her vivid green "community supporter" color. It wasn't related to her real name, Nora, but it was almost signature to her at this point. 

She let out a sigh of relief, then put the phone face down in her lap and yawned.

Ash sits alone on their bed with the lights off. Outside, they can hear an occasional car pass by, though those are infrequent. Ash technically lives in this apartment with their parents, but they... aren't around much, and tonight is a night like all the rest.

Ash sighs, then groans, then rolls off their small bed—not minding the pain from hitting the uncarpeted floor—and searches in the moonlit darkness under the bed for their laptop. Their fingers find the clunky machine and they drag it out, and—lying on the floor—open it.

It takes several minutes to start up, and the fan goes on and off. Ash has to restart the whole process as they plug it in—the thing died as soon as it turned on, of course.

Once it finishes, Ash types in their password and opens up the private browser. They know their parents check their search history. If they... have the time or care to...

Ash shakes their head and logs into the forum. They found it all that time ago, and... it's become a solace, these past few years. There's a new post by some sketchy user—well, as sketchy as one can be here. "Horror. It has a bad reputation..."

Ash—here, NotAfraid07—reads the post, but doesn't reply. They don't usually like being the first to post; they're more of a... lurker.

I haven't yet decided if they're hyper-active or just a "check the forum a few times a day or spend hours when depressed/bored" type of person but yeah we can see

At the bottom of the screen, the “now viewing” indicator, which only lists three users, Bellstrum, NotAfraid07, and [ @GG0z mind providing a username?], suddenly ticked up to four, though no username appeared. After a few seconds, it ticked back down to three. This wasn’t necessarily alarming, anonymous users or moderators technically didn’t have usernames and a moderator would most often use an anonymous account to scan the forum with a but more privacy. Still, several of the other users still found the anonymous accounts a little creepy. Best forget that happened.

A boy opens his computer and boots up a VM, 4 different VPNs and a custom proxy server for extra safety before logging into BlackWeb. Everyone here just knows him by his username, Deception.

His signature contains hidden links to who-knows-where, so if you were to accidentally click under his message, you would probably end up with his spyware on your device. Everyone knows to avoid putting their mouse or finger in the general area, but sometimes people mess up. It never goes down well when they do.

He types out a short message: Horror is only good when the characters all end up dead in the end.

He hits the post button, the message taking a second to pass through all of the filters before escaping onto the forum, with the deadly signature underneath.

"@288B22 Don't mind edgy "decepticon" here", Nora wrote, "He's just trying to get you to click on the links in his signature, because he's too stupid to figure out how to hyperlink it in text instead. Just go to user settings and disable signatures- trust me, it'll be better for you"

She sat back in her bed. It was super comfy for some reason, and was kinda cool, like the kind you only get by doing a lot of work first before actually trying to rest.

@anonuser288b22’s username appeared at the bottom of the screen. A minute or two later, a post loaded in from the user, quoting Deception.

Horror isn’t necessarily edgy, it read. Robert W. Chamber’s The King In Yellow is a set of related horror short stories told in more of a style of the romantic period, with themes of insanity, edenic loss of innocence, and unspeakable evil. In many of the stories, however, there is some form of a happy ending.

An account called IQWT587 randomly joins and starts posting seemingly empty messages, that are actually full of tab characters hyperlinked to ...u guessed it... more spyware. It posts really fast - too fast for anyone to communicate properly on the forum without having to scroll through 5 pages of sketchy posts every time.

@dejavu, 288B22 posts, pinging a moderator. Fairly quickly, an anonymous account appears, tracks down the IP address of the spammer, and bans all user connected, then adds the Deception account to a specific “monitor” category to allow limited access to the site.

"Dude, actually just $#%! off," Nora wrote as Bellstrum, invoking the swear filter whilest quoting Deception,"If you want to be a useful hacker, maybe stop posting links on the world's most obscure message board and look at something like, idk, a fan-made discussion board for a well known fantasy author or something. Or maybe try to be less irritating with your methods"

She watched as what she presumed was the anti-spam quickly deleting all of the posts made by this new user while she was typing it.

Before sending, she notices this, but doesn't comment on it. "Maybe it's just another Fell alt." She muses to herself.
