One question that came to mind just now for me after my 2nd read through of WaT is, if the shards impart memory of their power’s history to their vessel, did the individual powers’ memories extend to before the shattering or do they begin at the shattering?

Well, I don't think so, as otherwise

HoA (Hero of Ages)

Spoiler

Sazed would know more about Adonalsium, and he doesn't appear to.

But, theorycrafting later. Which of Brandon's books have you read? Have you finished the Cosmere? What is you favourite Cosmere character?

I’ve read all the cosmere except for the Emperor’s soul. So many favorites. Kaladin speaks to my souls as a protector, also LOVE Adolin. Hoid, Vasher, and Lift are up there too.

Yes I have read Arcanum. Good info for sure. I’ll have to check out ES. The reason for my initial question was a thought that if Adolnalsium broke off a big piece of himself and tucked it away on his favorite creation before he was shattered, the powers/Shards would have no knowledge of it…..

Do you mean something like Roshar or Canticle? You know, you I think you should create a topic here.

Hi, posts in Introduce Yourself should not have spoiler questions or Cosmere discussion, as we have other boards for that. I have moved this into the Wind and Truth spoiler board.

I think it

Just depends

Like - the powers are obviously sentient, right? And they have some memory of what happened before.

But they are also… like… little babies. Young.

Sooooo… they prolly have difficulty remembering with all exactitude, ye?

They were likely born at the point of the shattering - not before (ie adonalsium is a parent, sorta like a spren doesn’t share Honor’s memory)

and it is also a matter of what they choose to share.

From WaT we see that the spiritual realm has all the info you could ever want, but you need a connection to that moment. I would guess, if memories are different than that, it works the same way.  If someone had Adonalsium’s hairpin or some other way of forging the connection I think it’s possible.

I know the shards were a part of Adonalsium so that should count but maybe it’s not enough. Maybe you need a connection to all the shards to see back that far.

I don't think they're all sapient. I think Honor and Odium became moreso because they were in conflict with their Vessels. I see no evidence that, say, Preservation is independent of Sazed. (The implication is that Ruin might become so.)

I think, given the right circumstances, they can grow to recognize their sapience - they all have a basic moral code aligned with their intent.
