"Well, it wasn't, but now it is."

His face reddens almost imperceptibly. "How mature . . ."

"He's 34!" July called back at them.

"July!"

"And in denial about it!"

"Appreciate it!"

August turned back to his book, face red.

July chuckled.

How should we introduce the other months?

That evening...

Naise and Keryth's house was about the size of her parents' and, like theirs, it was near the edge of the village. The three dismounted, and Keryth tied the horses to a post. There was some hay and grass for them to graze on. Naise led her sister inside.

Jolane fiddled with the uncut red stone Roy had given her. Naise had made a curious expression seeing it, but she hadn't explained.

"There's a lot to do tomorrow since we've been gone for a couple days," Naise told her. "Let's get to bed early, then you can help tomorrow. If you want to, of course."

Jolane nodded. "Okay."

Naise sighed. "I know you're disappointed. But with people coming after them, it's not safe for you. We can't lose you again."

"I know.."

Naise hugged her, a hand on the base of Jolane's braid.

yeepp let's get this party started (again)

Somewhere in Truehearth, early morning

March pushed away from the bar, drink in hand. He made his way across the room to where his two companions sat at a round table. They had agreed to meet in the tavern that morning after searching the city for July. Guessing from the fact that July wasn't with them, it seemed they'd had the same poor luck as him.

He set his drink on the table, and his plate armor clinked softly as he sat down.

Really, there was no reason to rush in finding July. It's not like he was a major threat to anything, September was just sore at loosing the Shi-Matahn, and the Emperor wanted him back simply for the sake of having him. The only real issue was that it was way more difficult to get June to do anything productive.

March readjusted his glasses before taking a swig of his drink. "So . . . I'm guessing you didn't find anything?" he asked April and November.

Jolane's family's village, a day or so ago

October scowled at the grave stone. June was humming and combing his horse's mane. They'd searched the whole village and found nothing. No silver buttons, no crystal earrings.

Just a gravestone with 'September' painted on it in scrawling handwriting.

"That's sweet that he took the time to bury her," June commented testily. He was right to be worried about October blowing up, the older man's mood had only gotten worse.

But for some reason, October couldn't be enraged by this. He just felt numb.

"Well you know, he was always the sentimental sort." He scratched his beard thoughtfully.

After a lengthy starting contest with the grave, he turned sharply and swung himself back onto his horse.

"Can I go look for July now, pleeeeease?" June asked, seeing that October was feeling uncharacteristically calm.

"No, August will be in the next city, or maybe the one after that."

"So we'll just keep looking for him for all eternity? He's famous for being slippery 'tober, let's just give up."

October glared at the younger man from his horse.

"Are you trying to stall for him or something? And hear I thought you two had a falling out."

June's face reddened in anger. "We did! This isn't about August at all, I just want to find July!"

"March and the others are taking care of it."

June grumbled something inaudible and got back on his horse.

Truehearth Gates

July looked up at the city wall, staring at the tall buildings past it. It was almost as big as the large cities in the empire he'd grown up in. He found the sound of crowds of people moving in and out oddly comforting.

August put his book away. "Well, we're finally here."

"Occasionally I get dreams that are somewhat... prophetic. When I was small, I dreamt I'd be separated from my parents." She shrugged.

"You mean you dreamt of being chosen by the Emperor himself," March corrected her matter-of-factly. "Don't act like it's some kind of tragedy."
