Having now sat back down at the table, Jenny felt rather proud of Terrance. He’d done a pretty good job of consoling Elsie. It seemed a little out of character for him, in a good way. She carefully inspected her cards lying on the table, trying to see if they had been tampered with or moved.

Did Edgar mess with Jenny’s cards?

He didn’t.

Noticing that her face was streaked from tears and the just from the way Jenny was acting, Edgar immediately knew something had happened. Something not good. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to  him.

Her cards seemed fine, thankfully. Ed suddenly hugged her. What was that about? Did she look sad? Maybe she still looked upset from earlier. She did feel a little funny, but couldn’t pin down exactly why. Things felt off, somehow.

It looked like everything was a little too saturated. It was comparable to the result of someone overcompensating with the brightness of their paints after being criticized for creating washed-out looking art. Maybe her eyes had dried out too much or something. She rubbed them, but it didn’t do much. The experience left her looking slightly confused.

She would tell him what had happened if she wanted to. He didn’t want to force her to talk about something she didn’t want to. “Do you need anything?” he whispered to her.

“I don’t think so. I’d like to play some more Uno, though.”

Fortunately, her excitement for that hadn’t been quashed. She still wanted to win. She carefully picked up her cards, noting that her movements were weirdly stiff. Strange. That was probably just a result of her injury. She should be fully up and running by the next morning, thankfully.

He kissed her quickly. “Ok, let’s play.” He stayed next to her, hoping his presence could help her relax. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Jenny smiled, still a little confused. She leaned on Ed a bit, fighting off the urge to sleep. She’d have time for that later. Right now, she needed to destroy all of her friends at a card game.

He smiled back, holding her tight.

Skip to the end of the game?

I’m good with that.

After the game was done, Edgar decided he needed to figure out what was going on with Jenny. Something had happened, and he needed to know how to help. “Will you walk with me for a little bit?” he asked Jenny.

“Sure!”

Jenny hopped up, excited at the excuse to move around. Trains involved a lot of sitting. They’d also moved on to an area with less animals standing in fields, so the view out the window wasn’t as interesting anymore.

He walked with her along the train until they found a secluded area. “Will you tell me what happened with you and Terrance?”

“Terrance was upset because he thought he was a monster. I made eye contact with him and got really spooked. I think with the way he’s been talking about things, it’s been bringing up some not very good thoughts in my head. The dread amplified them.”

Jenny felt strangely embarrassed. She kept losing any progress she made when it came to improving her self image, despite all that Ed was doing to try to help her.

He wrapped his arms around her again. “I’m so sorry, that must have been horrible for you. Can I do anything to help?”

Something in Jenny felt indecisive. That emotion then withdrew, the saturation leaving along with it. She would’ve felt more relieved were it not for the fact that her put-togetherness had also faded away. Her posture slumped a bit and she once again was on the edge of pushing herself too far.

“Hugs are nice.”

He hugged her a little tighter. “Well I’m always here to give them.”

Jenny smiled weakly. This quest would’ve gone far worse for her had Ed not been there to calm her down. She slowly forced herself to relax. Staying tense would just exhaust her more. She hugged Ed back, but not quite as tightly. Her arms felt too heavy for that.

“Is there anything else I can do?”

“Um… don’t die?”

Jenny always felt bad when she didn’t know what to do to help, so she figured that she should give Ed an answer since he’d been asking that so much. She also genuinely wanted him to follow that request, although he was probably already planning on doing that. Still, it couldn’t hurt to remind him.

“I won’t. I promise you I won’t. I have someone to live for now, remember?”

Jenny nodded. It made her sad to think that Ed apparently didn’t have anything to live for before he’d met her. It had admittedly been the same for herself, though. Thinking about how awful that had felt just made her more sad for Ed. She was glad he didn’t have to feel that way anymore. Since her head was pressed against his chest, she closed her eyes and listened to his heartbeat. It was a comforting reminder that he was ok.

He rested his head on top of hers, holding her there for a long moment. He didn’t feel like he needed to talk anymore.

Eventually, Jenny nearly collapsed. Standing there with her eyes closed, the sound of Ed’s heartbeat had briefly lulled her to sleep. His arms around her prevented her from falling, but she still blushed with embarrassment. She probably should’ve sat down, but she didn’t want to move.
