Someone is going to think that you’re acting the way you do for selfish or bad reasons, someone is going to dislike what you do to try to make them feel happier or accepted or loved. You can try your very best to do exactly what they want…” his voice broke a little, “but they can still not like you. Does that make sense?” “But very few people like me. I understand that there are people out there who won’t like someone no matter what, but so many people hate me. If everyone you meet thinks you’re awful, then that means something. Not everyone is the type of person to hate someone no matter what. Most people are good.” Jenny hugged her knees, staring at the ground again. She fought to keep back tears. ”There’s gotta be something wrong with me.”

There were these distant screams, but they died out quickly. Then a voice said something along the lines of: Stop messing with things you don't understand, you stupid kid! I responded with a confused what? and the the voice told me to wake up. And I did." "Hm." Terrance seemed to consider this.

Because the one I know that does…well he more than likes you.” He smiled at her. “In fact, he thinks you’re the most wonderful, beautiful, kind person he’s ever met. And he thinks that the people that hate you don’t know you well enough, otherwise they wouldn’t feel like that.”

Maybe people just didn’t know her well enough. Then why don’t people ever want to get to know you? Her smiled faded until it was slight, but it remained. She needed to hold out hope, assume the best. It’s what kept her going; she couldn’t lose that. She finally hugged Ed back.

She didn’t want anyone else to hear about the voice. Only some people knew about it, and they didn’t know the full extent. Ed was the only person who understood it completely, and she wanted to keep it that way. She didn’t want everyone to think she was even crazier.

After all this time…after everything they’d been through together, it was still hard to believe she cared about him that much. But she was scared, terrified, of what the voice could do to him. He would find a way to get rid of it. But for now, he was perfectly content to try to comfort her. He leaned in, putting his forehead against hers. “I love you too, and I won’t let anything come between us. I have someone to fight for, to survive for. I’ve never really had that before.”
