By saying “I love you,” I would assume. As for you and Edgar…I am bad with emotions, and I cannot interfere here. You must do this on your own.

Ok, thanks.

That wasn’t very helpful, but she couldn’t blame Gift. It probably didn’t have experience with this stuff. Jenny balled her fists and stood there for about five more seconds. She then walked back over to Ed and tapped him on the shoulder.

”Um, talk. Tree. Please.”

Well, she’d at least gotten the important words out. She gestured in the general direction of the tree, struggling to make eye contact.

He looked up at her. “Ok,” he said quietly. He looked afraid. Was she going to break up with him? That had to be it, her nervousness, the way she had ran, the reason for her earlier headache. It made sense. He prepared himself for it. He wouldn’t be taken by surprise. He would be strong. He walked with her.

When they got to the tree, Jenny took a single, deep breath. She started to talk extremely quickly.

”Ok, so this is probably way too early, but I’ve got something to say. I’m honestly worried that I might die soon cause of the quest and weird headache stuff, and I just need to tell you in case something happens. It’s ok if you don’t feel the same way. I mean, I hope you do, but it’s ok if not.”

She took another breath, anchoring herself in Ed’s eyes. She could do this.

”I love you, Ed.”

Oh. That. He hadn’t been expecting that. It was one question answered though. He wished he could say he loved her back, wished he could feel something other than the numbness that covered him at her words. But he wasn’t sure. He couldn’t know yet. He wanted to love her, he really liked her for sure, but he wasn’t sure if he loved her.
“Oh.” How to respond… “Thank you?” He looked down.

Jenny nodded. He didn’t love her back. That was ok. Had she pushed him away now, though? He was looking down. She’d screwed up. She’d ruined it all. Stupid, impulsive Jenny.

”I’m, um, sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”

She then scaled the tree, ignoring the flare of pain in her side, and hid in the branches. She had practice with this, so she managed to become completely hidden.

She had messed up. She should’ve waited. She never thought things through. Even things as important as this she failed to approach logically. So, so stupid.

Edgar tried to grab her arm before she could leave, but failed. So he started to slowly climb the tree after her. “Don’t leave, please,” he said to her, voice strangely hoarse. She loved him. That wasn’t bad, right? Even if he didn’t know if he loved her back? He probably did, right?

Jenny didn’t reveal herself. She was too afraid that Ed didn’t like her anymore. That he felt like he was forced to choose between two extremes. She was going way too fast. No wonder she always scared people off. They were right to run.

He looked around, trying to find her. “No, I’m sorry.” He looked around, more frantic. Where was she? Didn’t she know he needed her? Was that needing her love? Her was such an idiot. “Let me see you, please,” he said, almost begging.

Jenny reluctantly popped her head out of a particularly thick cluster of branches. Her braids were ruined by this point, filled with leaves and snapped off twigs.

”Please don’t be sorry.”

Ed feeling sorry made her feel even worse. It was her fault she’d put him in such an uncomfortable position. She was such a terrible girlfriend.

He scrambled towards her. “Thank you.” He reached out to her, his fingers almost brushing hers, then promptly fell out of the tree, landing hard on his back. The air rushed out of his chest, and he felt like he couldn’t breathe. He needed her.

Jenny immediately jumped after him, barely managing to land on her feet.

”Are you ok?!”

She started getting out some of the last of her ambrosia, in case he’d broken something. Her concern for Ed temporarily extinguished her feelings of shame and regret. It was her fault he’d fallen out of the tree, but she didn’t have time to think about that right then. He needed her help.

He gasped, air flooding his lungs. “Fine,” he coughed out.

Jenny frantically thought, trying to figure out what to do. Had he broken bones, fractured something? She’d need a crash course from the Apollo kids when they got back to camp.

”Does anything hurt really bad?”

She kept the ambrosia ready, just in case, although he didn’t seem to be urgently bleeding out or anything.

He struggled to sit up. “No. Fine. Just need. You.” He looked into her eyes.

Jenny looked concerned and a bit scared. She helped him sit up, trying her best to not hurt his likely now bruised back. Her feelings of shame were now racing back to her. She was the reason he had climbed up into the tree, so it was her fault he’d fallen and hurt himself.

”What do you need me to do?”

“Just need. You. Here, with me.” It hurt, but not as bad as the confusion did. Why couldn’t he just know?

Jenny nodded. He was struggling to talk. He seemed to be fine otherwise, so maybe the wind had just gotten knocked out of him. She wanted to hold his hand, but he might not want her to do that anymore.

But he said he needed her. She had to do something to make him feel better, anything. There was one thing she knew had worked before. Jenny grabbed the flower from her braids and held it out to him, her hand shaking a bit.

”Do you want a death flower?”

He reached out and took it. “Thank you. I…I’m sorry for not knowing,” he said, his voice returning.

“No, please don’t be sorry! I brought this up way too soon, probably. I just… I’m really scared. I don’t know if I’m gonna survive this quest, and I wanted you to know. I shouldn’t have told you yet, I’m so sorry.”

She was so selfish, hurting Ed just because she was frightened. You weren’t supposed to do that to someone you loved. She wished she could take their conversation back, ensure she didn’t make him feel this way.

“It’s…nice to know. I was wondering anyway. I just wish I could know myself well enough to say I love you back. I want to. I want to be in love with you. I might be, I don’t know.”

 Why was he so terrible?

Jenny nodded.

”It’s ok, really.”

They hadn’t known each other for very long at all. She always rushed headlong into things, and it wasn’t reasonable to expect anyone else to. But it had made Ed upset. She was so foolish. So shortsighted.

“Ed, we practically just met. I’m surprised I feel this way so soon. I don’t expect you to, yet. That wouldn’t be fair.”

He felt guilty. He was already worried about her, and now he felt guilty too. She knew this was a bad idea, why didn’t she listen to herself? She wanted to run away again, but Ed had said he needed her there.

Very, very slowly and hesitantly, he put his arms around her, then pulled her close to him. “Can I still do this?” he whispered. He wanted to hold her, to have her there. Was that love?

“Of course.”

Jenny wrapped her arms around Ed and rested her chin on his shoulder. She managed to keep herself from crying. That would make Ed feel even worse. She was glad he still wanted to hold her. Maybe she hadn’t completely driven him away.
