"I never said I was happy. That's not a very reasonable goal for someone who can't make eye contact without terrifying people."

“That doesn’t mean you aren’t supposed to be happy. It’s not your fault that you accidentally scare people sometimes. You didn’t choose to be different. You didn’t pick for your parent to be the god of what most people hate, even though it’s a necessary thing. You’ve got it harder than most, but that doesn’t mean you should just give up.”

He shook his head.

“She’s right. People have misjudged her just because of who her dad is, I’ve seen it. Your parent doesn’t decide who you are.”

"It does when it has a tendency to inspire people to get rid of you by any means necessary."

“It’s not doing that right now, Terrance. I know how rare that is for people like us. I’d encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity, at least give us a chance.“

He did not answer, but he sat down instead of entering the forest.

Jenny smiled. He’d finally listened. She’d actually helped. She would’ve thanked Terrance for staying, but was worried speaking to him again would somehow scare him off.

She squeezed Ed’s hand and whispered to him.

”Thanks for backing me up.”

Aaron spun around, his sword materialising from his bracelet, and he was already calling up vines, when he noticed who it was. "What do you want" he sighed

“Of course, sorry I couldn’t do more.” He squeezed her hand back.

“He’s listening. That’s good enough for now.”

Jenny scanned Ed, checking for visible signs of injury. It was probably fine to ask about whatever had happened to him a few minutes ago now.

”Are you ok? You seemed like you were hurting really badly earlier.”

“I’m fine, just a little shaken up. I think whatever happened to Terrance did something to me too.” He bowed his head. “I should have been stronger though.”

“Sometimes there’s only so much you can do. You can’t tough out everything. Please don’t think this was your fault.”

Jenny was a bit worried by Ed’s answer. She didn’t like the possibility that whatever Terrance had was contagious.

“I guess.” He didn’t seem convinced.

Jenny had no idea if she’d successfully convinced Ed or not. She hoped so.

She sat still for a moment. Her tiredness allowed her to do that for once. She was worried that falling asleep wasn’t a good idea, however. They needed to be able to leave quickly, so Jenny needed to be alert.

”I need to find a way to stay awake. Got any ideas?”

She rarely had this problem. Jenny had a surprisingly good sleep schedule.

“You could just fall asleep. You probably need it.” He hugged her gently.

Something in Jenny was terrified of falling asleep. She didn’t know why it was so scared, but she listened to the feeling anyways. She trusted her instincts.

”For some reason sleep doesn’t sound like a good idea to me right now.”

“I’m good, although I appreciate the gesture.”

Jenny yawned. She was so tired… maybe her instincts were a little off. Sleep was good. Why did her head hurt? That didn’t matter. She began to nod off.

By this point, Jenny had already passed out. Her breathing was noticeable, chest rising and falling. That was odd, for her. It wasn’t heavy breathing, but it was a step up from her normal corpse-like state when she slept.

Terrance started humming softly, nearly inaudibly. There was no clear melody that could be made out.

Edgar smiled, stroking her hair gently.

Lucid then walks off, joining the main group, sitting in the nearby tree to take the first watch.
