Jenny nearly started to speak, then glanced over at Roy. She wanted to help Harold- he was inexperienced and needed someone to protect him. Killing monsters was something she was good at, something she could do to help. Perhaps make up for yelling at him earlier.

But she couldn’t leave Edgar alone with Roy. Edgar didn’t seem like he was going to go with Harold, and Roy had nearly killed him less than two days ago. Jenny fully expected him to try murdering him again, especially while he was still tired. While the other demigods would be there, she didn’t expect them to keep as vigilant a watch as she would. She would go with Harold only if Roy did as well.

"I could If you want."

"Alright. You set the pace. I'll go slow." Harold says, waiting for Rob.

"You need to rest. I don't want you hurt any more than you already are."

“Of course I am,” he said with a sigh. They probably just didn’t want him to mess them up. They had good reason.

Jenny guessed that Edgar was sad about this. He hated feeling useless, and not being able to help probably made him feel that way. It wasn’t his fault, but telling him that didn’t seem to make him feel any differently. She squeezed his hand in an attempt to comfort him.

She didn’t particularly like that Harold was talking about Edgar like he was still injured. He was tired, sure, but was back to completely healthy after drinking the gorgon blood. Edgar could still do helpful things, even if those things didn’t involve fighting.

He squeezed her hand back, giving a sad smile. He immediately changed it  to a fake, happier smile. He didn’t want his feelings to be a burden on her too.

"Okay" he said starting to run, not as fast as Harold would want to maybe but still a good speed and probably faster than he expects.

Roy had decided to join Harold and Rob. Jenny figured that three people would be enough, so she stayed behind. A group any larger might seem suspicious or draw attention.

Edgar was smiling, so that meant he was probably happy. Maybe he was starting to like himself more. Maybe she was actually helping.

He’s lying to you, Jenny.

Ignoring the voice, she took out Sword and began tossing it in the air. Jenny eyed a particularly thick, sturdy looking tree.

“Wanna practice throwing knives again? We can use that tree as a target.”

“Sure, then maybe I’ll finally be of use,” he said glumly.

She’d been wrong.

He can’t even be bothered to keep up the lie.

”Edgar, I…”

Do you really think anything you could say would help?

Jenny bonked the side of her head to see if that would get rid of the voice.

Seriously?

She bonked her head again in case it was trying to throw her off. Jenny had now been distracted enough that forgot about Edgar’s statement.

”What were we doing…”

Before he could respond, she answered her own question.

”Knife throwing, right.”

She chucked Sword at the tree, which embedded itself right in the center of the trunk.

He grabbed her other hand, then pulled her so she was looking towards him. “What is it? I can tell something’s bothering you, is it the voice again?”

He wished he could help more. He was failing again.

 Useless.

“Yep. It keeps calling you a liar.”

There wasn’t much of a reason not to tell the truth. Edgar already knew, why hide it from him? Jenny bonked her head.

You’re making yourself look ridiculous.

“I’m trying to see if I can rattle it.”

She bonked her head yet again. All she got in return was a long sigh.

”I don’t think it’s working.”

“It’s ok, the voice is just trying to be mean. I don’t think you’re a liar, smiling doesn’t count as lying.”

Jenny quickly dashed over to the tree and back, retrieving Sword. She’d now given up on trying to physically affect the voice.

”And it’s ok to tell me when you’re not ok. I think hiding it can just make you more upset.”

“I don’t know…body language is called a language for a reason. Regardless, I’m sorry.”

He watched her run. He was lucky to have such a good…friend? Girlfriend? He wasn’t sure.

“Yeah, it can. I’m just…bad at talking.”

Aaron

Aaron watches the exchange between his two peers. He shakes his head. So much drama, and what is this about a voice in her head? he pulls h=out his leatherish journal again, and he writes in it, the harsh colour of the magic ink bleeding literally into the page.

He snaps his book shut again, "Wish that we were seen less recently" he mumbles. "It would have allowed us to use standard transport, but NO, Furies and hellhounds attack us on a bus full of mortals, and of course we meet Medusa, and we have to be seen walking away from that as well."

He sighs, "Why me?" he asks the Sky, and the Earth

He sits back, resting against a boulder, feeling the weight of his actions, and watches Jenny and Edgar practice knife throwing.

Love the Drama by the way. I am hooked.

“I’m bad at body language, so together we have the social skills of one regular person.”

Jenny attempted to make a deadpan joke, but a slight smile still stole its way onto her face. Humor always cheered her up, so hopefully it would do the same for Edgar.

She noticed Aaron watching them and immediately waved.

”Hi Aaron! Wanna learn how to throw knives?”

The kid had been less insufferable than he was at the beginning of the quest. Perhaps he was realizing that he needed to be more humble.

He smiled at that. “You’re right, and with us two, we have the beauty of three regular people.” He leaned in and whispered, “Four of those are from you,” but this didn’t have the same depressed tone as before, it was obviously a joke.

Thanks for reminding me about the Hubris

Aaron

"I know how to throw knives" Aaron lied. "I can do it very well, so why do you want to teach me?" he asks. Please don't ask me for a demonstration he mentally pleads.

He sits back, and tries to pretend that he is asleep, adding some extremely realistic snoring sounds into the mix.

Remember Aaron is 12, so he is extremely bad at these things, but somehow he is adept at fighting and magic...

Jenny was about to correct him, her face briefly concerned, but realized that he was probably also making a joke and laughed. She blushed a little at the compliment, too. Humor seemed to be helping. She’d make sure to remember that.

”Oh, that’s great! Maybe you can help give Edgar some pointers!”

They needed to stay vigilant, especially now that half of the group had left, so letting people sleep wasn’t a great idea.

Please go away he once again mentally pleads. Still pretending to be asleep. He adds a bit more snoring, which he hopes will drive her away. As she would think that he is sleeping.
