"Well, you saw one. What do you want me to do? I can probably do most of what you'd expect."

"Hm." She closed her eyes for a moment, concentrating. The room around then suddenly burst into light, the ceiling opening to sky and the walls vanishing as a peaceful forest unraveled around them. The sights, the sounds, even the smell of the air were shifted. It seemed too real to be a construct.

Julie yelped, and the illusion vanished, leaving the room jarringly dark, small, and cold. She rushed to his side, once again looking tired and disheveled. And now, frightened.

"Daniel! Are you okay? What's happening?"

He doesn’t respond. She can faintly see something moving around him, seeming to be attacking him.

She froze as she saw the thing. "What... what are you? Leave him alone!"

It ignored her, kicking at Daniel, who flinched. The thing continued attacking until Daniel stopped moving. Then it dissipated into nothing.

"Daniel?" She tried to see if he was still breathing.

She jumped. "You're alright!"

He shuddered. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just another vision. I guess now you can see why I don’t like to talk about them.”

"There was this... thing attacking you. I thought... I thought you might have..." She went quiet.

“You saw that? People usually can’t see anything,” he said, voice shaking. “I’m sorry you had to see it.”

"I'm sorry you went through it! What is that thing?" She went red. "Uh, you don't have to answer that. Sorry."

“No, it’s fine. This time, somebody killed me, they beat me to death.”

Yeah, I haven’t seen them before, but they’ll come sometime.”

Julie nodded. "So... are you alright?"

“Yeah, just give me a second. He suddenly stopped shaking, his voice instantly returning to normal.”

"Are you sure?" She looked him over, still appearing frightened. The illusion she had placed on herself had not been restored; apparently it had been forgotten.
