Kealie flicked her morningknife at the creature, suddenly very nervous.

Hey, get off the path into those trees and there’s a thicket. You might be able to lose it there.

Kealie relayed the info to Vance. “So… what do we do?”

2 minutes ago, Channelknight Fadran said:

Oh damn. Vance thought to himself.

"Stay back!" He ordered. "I'll take care of this... guy. See if you can tie up the witch or something if you get the chance."

The demon swung his sword through the air and a crackling wave of fire swept towards Vance and Kealie.

"Ah... snap. You're right." Vance whipped out both his knives. "Well, if you've ever wanted to learn to be a support caster, then now is certainly prime time to learn."

“Support caster?”

First strikes were, more often than not, easy enough to dodge. Vance vaulted to the side and came up with a roll, subtly pushing out the air around him to make a weak force field. Knowing Kealie she'd be fine as well, but trying to fight against this thing and protect her at the same time was... somewhat ludicrous. Against this thing, it almost definitely would be better in most situations just to run.

There was, of course, a problem with that.

"Retrive Aether stone. Kill everyone."

Where in the world did a witch like that get a leash on something like this? Vance started circling about the demon, staying clear of its attack radius for the time being. Though I've been thinking that a lot recently, come to think of it. Maybe I just underestimated her.

Summoning a demon was one thing. Commanding one was another. No doubt this creature was the culmination of months' - possible years' - worth of efforts. And it was worth expending for this stone?

No shot she's working alone. Vance had circled back around to near Kealie. Too bad she gave us the slip... though I doubt this will be the last we've seen of her.

Well... unless we die here, that is.

"Support caster," Vance said, half-guarding Kealie with his stance, "means a less offensive role in combat. Instead of hurling fireballs or hitting things with pointy sticks, you stay back and control the battlefield to be as advantageous as possible for your teammates. Your powers are perfect for that - especially if you do it subtly and make sure not to eat up too much of your own energy."

Against this thing? Without any doubles training? It would be shoddy work at best. But Kealie learned quick. Surely her help would turn out to be invaluable at best.

"Try not to do anything big and dramatic like that tree or the lava pit," he explained. "It'll drain you a lot quicker - not to mention you might stop believing in it. Simple things like putting a root in their way, smoothing the ground underneath me; stuff like that. Lots of people look past the small things like that, but it's really the most unnoticeable changes that are most invaluable to setting the terrain for yourself in battle."

Who said she had it on a leash? (Redacted because I probably shouldn't share the magic theory until after the battle)

Also Haly, what is the radius of the rain? Is it covering the battlefield or the region or what?

The demon roared and flew forward towards Vance, sword held to its side.

“Oh, okay. I’ll try.” She focused on the battlefield, watching for things she might have missed. There was a small rock.

Don’t know if that’ll do any good, but okay.

It doesn’t cover a lot of area. She’s not focusing on it.

Also I gotta go.

"Crap-" Vance blazed out with his energy, covering both him and Kealie with an incredibly dense cone of cutting wind.

The demon crashed into the cone of wind, the air cutting into it's body. It limped back and roared, sending another wave of fire towards Vance.

The fire was blasted aside, not a trace making its way anywhere near Vance and Kealie. For now this shield would hold against just about anything that demon could throw at them, but holding it forever was - by definition - impossible..

"Anyways," Vance grunted, "if I die, just run. Don't try to take the aether stone. I might end up using it on this thing... I dunno."

What are the dimensions of the shield?

What benefit would that give us? We'd be trapped. Hyron thought at the voice, glaring at the soldier, who was still holding Yerik.

Between Kaeni & Kealie and Fadran & Vance I’ve been quite caught up myself.

“And then we would have taken those trees down too. People fell hundreds a day to build the most basic of homes, just to survive the wind and rain. Two or three is not many.”

its*

"it's" is "it is." Its is possessive.

To this day I'm not entirely sure why.

ARID-

Vance's concentration skyrocketed in the precious few instants before the sword made contact. All the mud he'd slid through hardened in an instant, coating him in a rock-hard clay. His arms shot into a cross over his face instinctively, guarding him with another burst of air. It wouldn't be enough and he knew it, but -

The sword crashed into him, and the shockwave of force on force sent him flying. Vance was thrown into the foliage, smashing through branches and splintering a dead tree clean in half. The last impact sent a heaving cough out his mouth, but broke his momentum and dropped him with an awkward tumble into the ground. The shield of wind and earth alongside a botched landing prevented him from taking any further damage, but impact from the sword and that tree...

Blood dripped down from Vance's nose.

Looks like I'll have to use that thing after all...

He reached over his shoulder for the staff.

But it wasn't there.

Hmm, the more you know. English is so weird.

The demon made some sort of twisted laugh and turned to Kealie, sending a wave of fire towards her.
