<p>Character History:</p>
<p>Ungatu was a warrior of the Jarhead Clan, a barbarian tribe that lives in the far reaches of Nowhere In Particular. He has been raised to hunt down and destroy evil, and this is his primary goal in life. Like most of the warriors of his tribe, he gives homage to Sabaoth the Safe, a battle god who allegedly takes the form of a giant winged dog and roams the world stomping on demons. In due worship of Sabaoth, most of the Jarhead warriors joined up with a group of civilized paladins to cleanse a nearby ruin. During the course of the fight, Ungatu killed a particularly powerful demon (it was distracted and wounded from a prolonged duel with a high-level paladin). The demon’s death ripped a hole in the boundaries between the planes and Ungatu was pulled through, to rematerialize in the Great Dungeon.</p>

<p><strong>Entire Party</strong></p>
<p>The ride out from the city is wholly uneventful. As you were told, there was a man waiting a few miles out from the entrance to take back the wagon. Looks like you go on foot from here. The trail rises before you, a set of rocky outcroppings and uneven footing.</p>
<p>As you climb the mountain, rocks and debris slow your ascent. Numerous tracks of different creatures ascend the hillside. The climb levels off as you get closer to the cave mouth. You see a man the size of a galleon lying on the ground at the cave opening. As you get closer, you can see that death has taken him. Despite his obviously decomposed state, the man does not exude the odor of decay. There are no signs of a struggle. Who was he, and how did he die?</p>

<p>Problems: I know nothing about D&amp;D (rules or backstory) and the party has already started out.</p>
<p>Proposed solution: The party will find my character in the dungeon and he will have no memory of where he is or how he got there. This will cover up <em>my</em> ignorance (mostly) and I am hoping it will count as a Flaw and give me an extra feat (like Umeri's voices.</p>
<p>I intend to play a barbarian, which will give you your close-combat specialist. </p>

<p>So with the announcement of D&amp;D Next, i've been feeling like playing some D&amp;D. I play with a gaming group biweekly (mostly), but they play 4th edition, of which I'm not a particular fan. As such, I was wanting to play some 3/3.5 edition D&amp;D (my favorite edition) and I also happen to have a published "module" called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World" rel="external nofollow">World's Largest Dungeon</a> at my disposal, and that got me thinking that it would be fun to put up in a play-by-post fashion. It also works out well, because as a DM i'm fairly lazy, and generally a bit under prepared, so the work has all ready been done for me.</p>
<p>Now, in order to do this, we would need at least 4 players (of which, i suppose if needed i could stand in for a player and do both DMing and player). If I receive a lot of interest in this, i will limit individual party sizes to groups of 4-6, though we could do as many different parties as we wanted.</p>
<p>So anyways, I just thought I'd put this out there and see what kind of interest there is in running this. You don't need to be an expert at 3rd edition, or even familiar with D&amp;D at all. I'm always available to help out with rules and character creation.</p>
<p>Also, we'd probably use <a href="http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/" rel="external nofollow">this</a> site for dice rolling.</p>

<p>The posting went out near a fortnight ago. Word spread across village and town as if carried on wings. The King of Bannor was seeking able bodied adventurers. Rumors surged about the riches to be paid, the magic items to be plundered. Every pair of lips had a different tale of the piles of treasure to be had, but few actually had any details behind the deed itself. </p>
<p>Clearing an army of orcs from the caves, some tales told. </p>
<p>Others told of an ancient dragon come to wake and ravage the land from it's lair deep within the musty catacomb.</p>
<p>Still others talk of a fearsome and terrible Lich contained within the depths of an old cavern come to wage war on the living.</p>
<p>One thing is certain, every tale includes the same destination. A deep cavern, unearthed due to recent geological activity, has shown itself to the north, in the mountains of Perdoth. The rumors also agree, none to date who have left with intentions of entering the cave have yet returned.</p>
<p>By this time, it's common knowledge that prior to this call, the king, King Veldspar III, sent out a handful of small parties to explore this new region. After losing near fifty men to the cursed catacombs in question he put out a call for bold adventurers to plumb its inky depths for the safety of his kingdom. The supposed rewards ranged anywhere from extravagant to legendary.</p>
<p>Everyone from the lowly pauper with a twinkle of gold in his eyes to seasoned adventurers have been rumored to left for the devilish depths. In the two weeks since the news broke, the city has exploded with travelers making their way to try their hand at the cave. Every inn, every tavern, even the stable yards all bustle with bold adventurers ready to take on the loathsome grotto. Some show up to the city all ready formed into bands, others show up solitary, hoping to find companionship within the city walls. Still other overzealous fools have made way for the cave solitary.</p>
<p>Regardless of the methods and plans laid by each participant, one thing is true. None have missed a chance to show up in town to boldly announce their intentions, if only to show off to the common folk.</p>
<p>Maps to the cave can be found around the city like confetti, each with their own nuances and quirks, but practically everyone of them puts the cavern in the same spot.</p>
<p>Despite the frantic bustle of the city, one fact rings true. This location is only the starting point of something greater. Merely the beginning of a truly epic thread in history that you are about to embark on....</p>

<p>Ok, explanation time. This is basically a communal in-character RP thread for people to meet and greet with party members. It's basically just an area for you to gather around the tavern and get to know each other, have a friendly drink or two, etc.</p>
<p>Note that the timing for parties leaving the city doesn't have to coincide with the timeline for when they're actually in the dungeon. That is, the first party that forms here doesn't have to be the "first" that left and started digging through the dungeon. As far as encounters in the dungeon goes, i'm not likely going to keep track of every single one, so most normal encounters will probably repeat for each party (though "boss" encounters may remain cleared). This is just handwaving to keep the book keeping down on my end. Also, just because individual parties leave here at significantly different times doesn't mean they can't meet up within the dungeon. Pretty much if two parties coincide in the same area at the same time, i will have them meet and converse, and maybe even "trade" party members (or if the two parties are small enough, either through initially small size or by players dying and deciding to quit, merge). Keep in mind that I would like to keep parties sized from 4-6 groups. Feel free to have your parties interact within the town before they leave, too. Maybe form some kind of friendly competition/rivalry with them or something (or outright villainous opposition).</p>
<p>Also note that your character doesn't exactly have to be done to participate in this thread (just need to have a rough idea of abilities and personality), so long as you are ready by the time you head out to the dungeon. I want to try to keep rolling/stats/skills/etc. out of this topic as much as possible and just let it flow free form for this thread, since it's a way to introduce your character in the manner that you want, not the manner that the dice say. I will still take care of any NPC interactions you don't wish to directly control (or don't know the answers for) for the sake of what your character does.</p>
<p>Once the party is formed up and ready to head to the dungeon, we will go ahead and split your group out into their own thread. It might also help if you guys decide on a party name once formed so it's a bit more clear who is who.</p>
<p>Also, feel free to make up the locations and such within the city itself. I don't have it mapped out, so it will pretty well form to whatever you need to introduce your character.</p>

<p>Ok, so character creation rules are as follows:</p>
<p>32 point buy</p>
<p>Full HP at 1st level (as standard)</p>
<p>Standard progression afterwards as appropriate for your HD </p>
<p>To give everyone an edge, everyone starts with 100 GP for starting supplies</p>
<p><strong>Experience points: </strong>Experience points will not be calculated nor kept track of. Instead, I will tell you when you level based off of your party's progress (this is how it's recommended in the module)</p>
<p><strong>Flaws</strong>: Flaws are allowed per the standard rules in <a href="http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/buildingCharacters/characterFlaws.htm" rel="external nofollow">Unearthed Arcana</a></p>
<p><strong>Divine MetaMagic + NightSticks:</strong> DMM is allowed, but nightsticks do not stack.</p>
<p><strong>Spells: </strong>I'm putting this here for any who missed it in the original topic, but some spells don't work exactly right within WLD. I won't say specifically which spells, and what's wrong with them is up to you to find out via experience, but in a nutshell, if it's a summoning or teleportation spell, it will likely have something "wrong" with it. You're still more than welcome to use them, but I wanted to put this out there up front so people are aware so that they can't complain later on.</p>
<p><strong>What about psionics/incarnum/truenaming/etc.?: </strong>Alternate magic systems are allowed. We will generally use the magic transparency rule (when there's a choice. PSIONICS. &gt;B( ). However, if your choice of magic system happens to be one that doesn't work out well (something like truenaming, where the DC's scale so that its basically impossible to use at high levels) we will have to look into using one of the various fixes out on the internet for it, which will be looked at and OK'd by me.</p>
<p><strong>Tome of battle?:</strong> Go nuts, buddy!</p>
<p><strong>What about food?:</strong> Food will be handwaved within the dungeon. That is, you won't need to worry about bringing enough rations/hunting down food, it will be assumed that you are able to keep yourselves well fed enough to live. The only exception to this may be in a particular area where part of the challenge is lack of food/water. If this is the case, i will assign a certain amount of food/water to the PC's at the beginning of the area, and once you leave the area, it will again become trivial. It's a bit too much book keeping, and no one likes to lose a hero because they starved to death.</p>
<p><strong>A word of advice: </strong>Because of how brutal this campaign is, and based on how it was developed, I can't recommend enough that a "balanced" part is used. That is, that it uses all the 4 stereotypical roles, A meatshield, an offensive caster, a healer, and a trapper.<em><strong> I also want to stress the importance of someone who can take care of traps</strong></em>, even if its an artificer who is focused on trapping, an incarnate with the required soul melds, or even just someone with a single level of rogue who keeps up with his disable device/open lock/search/spot skills. There are traps in this dungeon, and they are NOT pleasant. I won't force a particular role upon anyone, but i wanted to make this known ahead of time.</p>
<p><span style="font-size:10px;"><strong>On crafting: </strong></span><span style="font-size:10px;"><span style="color:#1C2837;">As far as crafting goes, since we aren't using EXP, if anyone wants to craft, we'll have to use crafting points similar to what an artificer gets (though non artificers probably won't get as many points as an artificer. Don't wanna belittle their class feature). Non-artificers will get half the crafting points of an artificer, as listed below. For every 2 crafting feats you have, add 50% (rounded down) of the below values. This includes artificers who pick up extra crafting feats. Artificers get the same amount for crafting feats as non-artificers (they just get a base pool every level that's twice the size). Also, for the GP cost, you will just be able to subtract that from your GP for any components required (so you don't have to try to hunt down specific items it lists)</span></span></p>

<p><strong>On spell components:</strong> <span style="color:#1C2837;"><span style="font-size:10px;">When you find gems in the dungeon, they're just going to be a generic "you find X GP worth of gems". These gems will function as spell components for any spell that requires gems of a costly amount. So instead of needing to find a pearl worth 100 GP for identify, or a diamond worth 5,000 GP for raise dead, you can just collect up the piles of generic gems until you have the amount needed for the spell. This is so that we don't have as much micromanagement for stuff like those spell components.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:10px;"><strong>On magic items: </strong></span><span style="font-size:10px;"><span style="color:#1C2837;">Everyone should come up with an item wishlist, and put it in your character thread. During the dungeon i will sometimes replace some magic items listed in the dungeon with things people actually want. Note that just because its on your wishlist doesnt guarantee you to get it. Also, make sure everything on your wishlist is reasonable for your current level, and just modify it as you level up. For example, if you're level 2, putting an epic +5 Vorpal wounding flaming longsword means you likely aren't going to get it. </span></span> </p>

<p>Character History: Striax was an unusual elf sense his 30th year.  For one thing, he started being blunt and to the point, which is unusual among elves.  He also started becoming more in tune with nature than other elves, and following the teachings of Nendawen.  For elves, this was highly unusual, as Nendawen was a beast in many elves eyes, his teachings only suitable for humans and lesser species.  Striax refused to listen to the cammands of his elders to stop following Nendawen, so he was banished from his tribe.  As he wandered the land Hwilan, the current Hand of the Hunter and Chosen of Nendawen came to him.  She offered him a choice: To stay wandering Faerun or to enter a portal that had been hidden underground and explore the new world for Nendawen.  Striax's restless heart told him to explore the new realm, and so he accepted.  But as he entered the underground portal, an earthquake was triggered and the portal was crushed right after Striax entered it.  The portal on the new side was also crushed, so Striax has been exploring and kind of looking for another portal in this new world.  Striax is an easygoing elf so the exile hasn't been to hard on him.</p>

<p><strong>Halmyr</strong></p>
<p>The deity of strategy and skill in warfare.</p>
<p>Domains: Knowledge, Law, Planning, Time, Travel and War. Base in CW is Law, Planning, and War. I added Time (Controlling the time of one's engagement is critical. When one is rested and your opponent is tired, victory is swift and sure.), Travel (As with time, controlling the location of a fight can make a difference between victory and defeat.) and Knowledge (...and knowing is half the battle. GIJOE!) I think they fit pretty well with him thematically (not that there is much in CW about him) and only 3 domains for a deity makes me sad.</p>
<p>Favored Weapon: Spear. Rapier in CW... I originally changed that to a greatsword, but I thought that might be a little much and spears are cool.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Character History:</strong></span></p>
<p>Born to human parents, both devout worshipers of Halmyr (his mother was a former scribe for the church and his father was a retired fighter), Sael Scarfr was entrusted to the clerics of Halmyr within minutes after his birth. His parents came to this decision rather easily, as the child obviously had some Celestial blood flowing through its veins (both of his parents have Celestial ancestors around 5 generations back but are unaware of this) and they felt he would be able to serve their god in a much greater capacity with the priests than he could with his parents. Given his name by his parents, Sael grew up in the order of Halmyr. Learning combat and studying warfare in general, combined with holy training, Sael was a quick study in all of his work but preferred the actual combat training to book reading, of which their was very little. However, knowledge is an important aspect of warfare, and Sael put forth the effort necessary to succeed, though it was a fairly long journey. Now that Sael has completed his initial training, Halmyr is sending him to the nearby town that sits at the feet of the mountains of Perdoth, as the deity can feel the initial rumblings of something big. While a more experienced member of his clergy might have been a more appropriate choice, Halmyr feels that the Aasimar is ready and should do well.</p>
<p>While Sael knows his parents fairly well, as they were frequent visitors to the temple, his main family is the other priests and his god. Like most Aasimar, Sael has a different relationship with his god than other followers. It more closely resembles a younger child and their distant uncle, rather than a worshiper and deity, as the Aasimar share actual blood ties with most Celestials.</p>
<p>Sael's personality is fairly easy-going, though he becomes serious during times of battle. He is prone to over focusing on a task or idea, which leads him to miss details that a more careful observer would spot  (this got him in trouble fairly often during training but it tends to serve him well during a fight.) Like his deity, Sael prefers to think and plan first, instead of charging into a situation, though if there is someone in need he will do so. Confident in battle, knowing that his deity is nearby, Sael is a rather talented fighter considering his mostly knowledge orientated training. However, Sael has a slight tremor that interferes with steadying his weapon for throwing. He ignores this, for the most part, and focuses on fighting at close range.</p>

<p>Character History:</p>
<p>Seynir's parent were killed soon after his birth by raiders, so he was brought up by his grandparents. A combination of unusual intelligence and childish sensitivity, allowed to understand concepts of aging and mortality very early, scarring and shaping his perceptions of the world. Equally afraid and fascinated by death, he has decided  to devote himself to Wizardry as possible means of obtaining immortality, or quick death, whichever comes first. </p>
<p>This outlook has also shaped his interaction with other people. He rarely forms empathic bond, but is quite protective of those that he does. On the flip side, he cannot care less about people outside his circle, and will gladly sacrifice a few hundred innocents if it means one of his friends coming back to life (or so he says to himself).</p>
<p>His pursuit if knowledge has lead him to the entrance of WLD, where he hopes to pursuit his knowledge of arcane arts, focused on immortality and destruction (for self-defense, obviously).</p>

<p>Idiosyncrasies:</p>
<p>Due to a close emphatic link between a familiar and himself , cannot bear the idea of putting it in danger, so the familiar never participates in battles/scouting/etc. (Just a HP buff, essentially)</p>
<p>Eats monsters, especially new species encountered. </p>
<p> Finds it very hard to speak lies in any form (can still joke, if certain that the joke is perceived as such. clarifies otherwise): bluff, diplomacy penalty. (Lying, or at least concealing own feelings is essential for diplomacy, IMO)</p>

<p>"First of all, let me get this straight.  My name is Umieri Bast D'Deneith of House Deneith.  You, however, may call me Umieri.  Or if we are getting formal, Sir Umieri D'Deneith. Never call me Bast, or make cat jokes about my name. Understand?</p>
<p>" I suppose you wish to know a little about me.  After all, you may be putting your life into my hands.  It is not the most interesting of stories, but it sure as the Six is not boring."</p>
<p>	I was was born the third son of a minor House Scion of House Deneith.  As far as I can gather, no House from where I come from exists here, so I will explain a little of what House Deneith is.  The Houses are mercantile empires, run by people who bear a specific Dragonmark, like me.  House Deneith is one such house, and they maintain a small mercenary army which, as would be obvious, is hired out to the highest bidder.  Further,  members of House Deneith are hired out as bodyguards, you might see why later.  I was one such bodyguard, and my client was an artificer studying the ancient ruins of Xendrick.  Xendrick being the ancient continent of giants and elves, but  I digress.  </p>
<p>	One such ruin was, as we were to find out, a lab for researching the possibility of alternate planes, beyond what can be access by the magic of that time.  As the ruins were located deep within the continent, and hidden within a manifest zone of unusual properties, I was hired as support for the primary bodyguards.  I say support because I am a cleric, not a fighter.  While my comrades tried so hard to tear themselves apart at the seems, I kept them together.  I wouldn't say being a cleric is an unusual profession for a Deneith, but it is certainly not common one.</p>
<p>	We arrived at the site in, well, not a <em>bad </em>condition, but certainly <em>not</em> a pristine one.  Several days passed without incident, but eventually our luck got pressed too far.  We got attacked, out of all people, by House Cannith!  Those spawn of Aureon's Shadow felt that, because the site held the remnants of an ancient prototype warforged, they could simply walk in and take over.  Of course we fought back.</p>
<p>	The rest of the events are fuzzy, but I am almost certain that is when I left my world altogether.  Perhaps an experiment started so long ago was completed, or an errant spell activated an eldritch machine, but a rift opened can swallowed the entire structure.</p>
<p>	The trip wasn't pleasant, it was actually quite painful.  I do not wish to make such a trip again.  Especially since I might encounter those...Things.  They wander the cold and dark in the space between spaces, jealous of our warmth, of our light.  Sometimes I think I brought them with me, they sit just out of the corner of my mind.  Like a fetid mold, or an ooze, seeping into my thoughts like an assassin's poisoned blade. Heh.</p>
