	We have already seen that grandpa Smedry can arrive late to his own death over and over again. I actually think this is my favorite talent for the defensive applications...
</p>

<p>
	But what about offensively?
</p>

<p>
	Would he be far more prone to missing his own shots?  Or even just whiffing every attempt at a punch or other strike?
</p>

<p>
	Or could he be so late swinging at the persons face that they inadvertently dodge their head into his punch 3 seconds ago because they themselves forgot where it was coming from?

<p>
	Mine: "Definition of 'Crapaflapnasti': 'adj. Used to describe an item which is as disgusting as fish sticks.' (Note: This word can only be used to describe fish sticks themselves, as nothing has yet been found which is equally crapaflapnasti. Though the unclean, moldy, cluttered space under Brandon Sanderson’s bed comes close.)"

<p>
	<em><span style="background-color:#f1c40f;">Note: At the time I am writing this I am completely lacking information on both Alcatraz and Harry Potter. It's been a few months since I read (well, listened to) Alcatraz and I forgot some things...so I will be relying on what I remember and what I gathered from the Coppermind. The same thing goes with HP; I haven't read any of the books, however, I have watched the movies and did my own research about the HP universe. And this idea was just for fun, heh. And feel free to correct me if I got something wrong.</span></em>
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">
	<strong><span style="background-color:#f1c40f;">IDK IF I SHOULD MARK THIS AS SPOILER SINCE I DO MENTION SOME CHARACTERS THAT AREN'T IN BOOK 1, BUT SMALL SPOILER ALERT ANYWAY.</span></strong>
</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I got inspired by<strong> 'Alcatraz in Roshar, what if...'</strong> so now I present to you:
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>What if Alcatraz and his crew got transported into the HP universe.</strong></span>
</p>

<p>
	I mean, it does sound somewhat plausible (+it's a fanfic idea, go figure). Where the HP and Alcatraz are parallel worlds in one universe--kind of like the Cosmere, except it's much more of a mini-universe in a big universe.
</p>

<p>
	Alcatraz and Kaz's Talents are on the whack again, which ends up with Kaz's Talent making them lost, and Alcatraz' Talent clashing with his. Because of this, it happened to mess with a universal law or the boundary that keeps them separate, which makes them end up in a world completely different (yet similar) from their own.
</p>

<p>
	I did enjoy toying with this idea, but as I went further I seemed to be getting nowhere. These are some other stuff that I came up with though.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>How they got to HP: </strong>I was thinking that they were in the middle of some sort of escape attempt, skirmish, or just playing around. Probably something similar to what happened in book 4 when Kaz tried get them to the glass ship that will transport them to Mokia.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>The crew: </strong>Alcatraz and Kaz, of course. Bastille, maybe the crew in book 4 + Grandpa Smedry or Draulin. Or Sing. I couldn't decide.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>Shenanigans that would happen (this is the best part):</strong>
</p>

<p>
	- Alcatraz would drive Hermione, Snape, Mcgonagall--and practically everyone--nuts
</p>

<p>
	- Alcatraz and Harry would try switching glasses. And I'm sure Al would get along with Harry and Ron. As for Hermione (see the statement above)
</p>

<p>
	- Filch will go mad from the chaos.
</p>

<p>
	- Kaz would get lost on the Quidditch field while a game is going on. He would also wind up in different professor's classes.
</p>

<p>
	- Grandpa Smedry would be late to everything, as always.
</p>

<p>
	- Someone's wand will get broken. I'm sure of it.
</p>

<p>
	- Bastille would totally sucker punch someone with her purse. I'm not sure who, but I'm debating Harry or Draco. She'd also (probably) get along well with Ginny.
</p>

<p>
	- If Bastille and Ginny DO get along, Ginny would invite her to play Quidditch. Bastille would try it, though she won't be happy.
</p>

<p>
	- Alcatraz tries Quidditch. Oliver Wood is not happy.
</p>

<p>
	- Any Mokians on the crew would surely enjoy Hagrid's company. Change my mind.
</p>

<p>
	- LUNA OH MY GOODNESS. I'm sure she'd appreciate the Smedrys' eccentrics.
</p>

<p>
	- When Grandpa gets into an accident, Madam Pomfrey would be confused asf as to why the wound hasn't gotten as bad as it should be by that time.
</p>

<p>
	- Snape doesn't know what to do. He really doesn't. But he does know he hates Alcatraz's guts more than any other students'
</p>

<p>
	- NEVILLE AND AYDEE INTERACTION. IT WOULD BE WHOLESOME ASF.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I might write a fanfic based off this, but I might not. If any of you guys want to use this idea or use this as a writing prompt, then go ahead!
</p>

<p>
	This is all I've come up with for now, though feel free to pitch in any ideas that you guys came up with. I'm curious to see what y'all think.

<p>spoilers, but only in the minorest sense of the chapter titles being revealed, and their relevance discussed.</p>
<p>So, all the chapter titles in this book are a bit weird.  Some of them have an easter egg quality, in that they refer to something, or have hidden significance that you might not see at first glance.  If you can figure out why a specific thing was chosen for a chapter title, please put it in this thread</p>
<p>Chapter titles, with any significance I was able to identify</p>
<p>1: Chapter 2 - because Alcatraz was too stoopid to include chapter 1, which is a shame because it has all the stuff that would make the book non-confusing</p>
<p>2: Chapter 6 - it's a relief he skipped all the boring stuff from chapters 3, 4, and 5</p>
<p>3: Chapter pi</p>
<p>4: Chapter 4 1/2</p>
<p>5: Chapter 42 - The ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy</p>
<p>6: Chapter 144</p>
<p>7: Act V, Scene III</p>
<p>8: Chapter A+</p>
<p>9: Chapter No!</p>
<p>10: Chapter 1010 - 1010 is 10 in binary, which matches up with the fact that it is the 10th chapter</p>
<p>11: Chapter 24601 - Main character's prison number from Les Miserables</p>
<p>12: Chapter 070706 - Probably a date (July 7th, 2006) but I don't know why</p>
<p>13: Chapter 6.02214179 x 10^23 - Avogadro's number, a constant having to do with measuring the number of atoms or molecules in a substance</p>
<p>14: Chapter Four Teens and a Pickle</p>
<p>15: Chapter 8675309 - The phone number in the popular song "Jenny".  Lord have mercy on anyone with this phone number in real life</p>
<p>16: Chapter 16 - Umm, this actually looks like the regular chapter number.  Am I missing some kind of trick here?</p>
<p>17: Chapter NCC-1701 - Or, more completely, USS Enterprise NCC-1701, the name of the ship in the original Star Trek series</p>
<p>18: Chapter 4815162342 - 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 is the sequence of numbers that appeared in the television show Lost.  People trapped on an island thought they had to type these numbers into a computer every so often or the world would end.</p>
<p>19: Chapter ???</p>
<p>20: Chapter infinity</p>
<p>21: Chapter infinity + 1 - for those of you not in the know, this number is the same as infinity.  You can't get any bigger than infinity</p>

<p>
	As you may know, Kazan Smedry, motivated solely by a desire to objectively and rationally study the implications of height on an individual’s ability to function in their communities and society as a whole, has compiled a collection of observations from his extensive scientific research into the nature of persons of comparatively diminutive stature as opposed to their taller counterparts. His list of reasons ‘why shorter people are better off than tall people’ is a landmark theorem in the totally legitimate field of ‘wee folk’ studies. Alas, while we know of <em>some</em> of the entries (noted below), the Librarians have successfully concealed much of Kaz’s research from us seekers of knowledge here in the Hushlands (likely because of their affinity for heeled shoes and other such height manipulating devices. I'm looking at you, <em>stilts</em>).
</p>

<p>
	This censorship is outrageous! I call upon you, enlightened rebels of the Shard,<strong> <em>to help me crowd-source the rest of the reasons on Kazan’s List</em></strong>, to break through this realm's awful haze of tallness propaganda.
</p>

<p>
	<em>The List (So Far):</em>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">1.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> Don't argue with the short person. He's always right. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">15.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> Short people make smaller targets. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">28.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> Short people can find things easier and follow trails better because they are closer to the ground. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">47.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> Tall people's heads are in thinner atmosphere, causing oxygen deprivation, which causes their brains to not work as well as short people's. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">56.5.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> Short people know when to stay on the ground (and avoid scary extreme heights). </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">63.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> If everyone were short, ceilings could be lower, thereby lowering building costs. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">82.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> When short people plummet to their doom, they don't fall as far. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">127.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> Short people have smaller bodies, but regular-sized hearts, so their heart-to-flesh ratio is larger, making them more compassionate. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">Possibly 144. </span></b><span style="color:#222222;">Short people are better because it takes them longer to walk places, therefore they get more exercise. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">236.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> Short people are more humble. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<b><span style="color:#222222;">257.</span></b><span style="color:#222222;"> A tall person can shield you from dragon breath. </span>

	We know that people marrying into the Smedry family gain a Smedry Talent. Which implies that being excepted into the Smedries literally just makes you a Smedry. And presumably if a Smedry couple divorced, the non-blood Smedry stops being a Smedry and loses their Talent. Would that work with adoption? For example, if a Smedry adopted a child would that child get a talent? And vice versa, if a Smedry disowned their child, Would they lose their talent?

<p>
	So there I was, having a normal day, when I began to reflect on how boring my life was. My reflection very quickly turned to the fact that in Alcatraz v.s. the Evil Librarians, Alcatraz's life is quite the opposite of boring. So I was wondering what you guys think the craziest—and most iconic—situations Alcatraz has been in, because there's quite a few to choose from. here are some of the best examples <em>I</em> came up with, but I bet you guys will be able to do even better, because I'm not that smart.
</p>

<p>
	—The situation when he's standing in front of a kitchen fire that seems to be burning unusually brightly holding not only the stove's knob, but also the handle of the pot in front of him. Quite a crazy scene from early book 1
</p>

<p>
	—The scene where he looks into a room full of dinosaurs, and one of them waves at him. Alcatraz decides that this really isn't the strangest thing that's happened to him that day, which is part of what makes this scene so good.
</p>

<p>
	—Uh...
</p>

<p>
	I swear I had more scenes from other books, but the coppermind is weird all of a sudden and I can't find the chapter summaries to remind me, so you guys are guys are going to have to help me out. I'm exited to see what you think of!

<p>
	1. (About) How long did it take you to read Alcatraz the first time (and how many were out at that time)
</p>

<p>
	2. How many times have you re-read Alcatraz?

<p>
	3. How long did the "fictional books" keep you awake at night?

	If a Smedry marries someone, that person gets a Talent because they're legally a Smedry. So what if a Smedry adopts someone? Legally, they would be a Smedry, so they should get a Talent, but I don't think it was ever addressed in the books.
</p>

<p>
	And what if a female Smedry marries someone? Does she still have a Talent if she isn't legally a Smedry? And does her spouse get a Talent?

	So, I've read basically everything by Brandon Sanderson except this series. I definitely enjoyed Rithmatist, Reckoners, and Skyward (especially Skyward), but Alcatraz is supposed to be for a younger age group than those books - is it worth reading for an adult who generally doesn't read middle-grade books?

	When Alcatraz turns the shaper's lens on his mom, it shows a world where the hushlands and free kingdoms live side by side. My thought is, if they live next to each other like that, it means that it would be impossible for the librarians to control information. Everyone would know about physics being a lie (or at least incomplete), and they would know about sands being important. She's taken all of the evil out of the hushlands. In a way, she's being less controlling than the free kingdoms, because she allows them a choice between our technology or theirs. In the fourth book, the King of Mokia tells Alcatraz that their way of life wasn't more advanced, it was just how they preferred it. Well, Shasta is allowing people to choose either the simple or the complicated lifestyle, or even a mixture of both. So I feel like Shasta isn't evil, and I was just wondering other people's opinions. Also, what were your thoughts on the black bubbling liquid she was trying to keep down? Was that the evil of the other librarians, or something warring inside of her? Alcatraz seemed to think it was the other librarians, and I suppose he would know, but it's possible he was mistaken. Honestly, I have no idea what I think about that.

<p>I read Alcatraz after I've read WoK, WoR and Mistborn. While reading Alcatraz I kept seeing analogies and references between this world and Cosmere or other books written by Brandon, or even other authors.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Why don't we try to find all the references from all the books? I can remember only a few from the top of my head, but I bet there are more.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>1) "Wasing not of wasing is" - Quentins Talent kicked in, making him say it. That's obviously reference to Mistborn trilogy.</p>
<p>2) Knights of Crystalia - to he, they have striking similarities to Knights Radiant. Or rather their crystal swords are very similar to Shardblades and their glass armors are somewhat similar to Shardplates.</p>
<p>3) The ending of first book, when Alcatraz expects his grandfather will leave him in his old house for couple of weeks. Grandpa calls it nonsense minutes later. - That's a reference to Harry Potter, Brandon admits it in the Annotations.</p>
<p>4) Curators in the Library of Alexandria --- Shadows from Threnody.</p>
<p>5) Transportation Glass from book 3 --- Oathgates. They work very similarly, exchanging the contents of two rooms.</p>
<p>6) Somewhere in Alcatraz books there is a mention of Rhysadium.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>And that's all I can think of now. What similarities to other worlds have you seen in Alcatraz series?</p>

<p>
	(Tbh they probably won't call it a school. It's a Librarian thing)

<p>
	They probably have something for general education, but not as controlled as grade school in the Hushlands. Maybe Free Kingdomers get to choose a specific field of study at a younger age: take Bastille and Aydee for example.

<p>
	I'm thinking 'schools' in their place are something much more engaging and exciting. Like a summer camp, though it will depend on the field of study you choose.

<p>
	We've listened to book 1 and 2 and decided to get the rest of the series, but I'm slightly confused about book 5's listing on Amazon.
</p>

<p>
	The reviews seem like it's book 5, and the title, while not saying anything about book 5, matches the title listed on Wikipedia.
</p>

<p>
	But the question is about the description and details. The description looks like it was copied and pasted from book 1's description. They also have no mention of it being book 5. I'm sure I'm not the only one who didn't even realize it was a 5th book in the series until I looked up the list on Wikipedia. I thought it was just a re-print or something.
</p>

<p>
	I thought about sending this via a direct message on his website but decided to ask here first in case this is some sort of joke or there is some reason the book's description is off.

<p>
	I decided to come up with a way to fit Alcatraz into Realmatic theory.
</p>

<p>
	Oculator's and Lenses:
</p>

<div class="ipsSpoiler" data-ipsspoiler="">
	<div class="ipsSpoiler_header">
		<span>Spoiler</span>
	</div>

	<div class="ipsSpoiler_contents">

			What happens with Oculator's is that they are constantly leaking ambient investiture from the eye, and very tiny amounts from the rest of the body. They can especially focus it through the eye, and are able to change the amount with practice. This Investiture does nothing on it's own, but when focused by a specific lens, it will do something with said investiture. Examples: Image/Lightweaving (Disguiser's) Wind (Windstormer's) Connection (Translator's) or Fortune (Oracle's). Oculator's lenses are weird, but I think they just let you see what your subconscious is seeing.
		</p>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Alivened:
</p>

<div class="ipsSpoiler" data-ipsspoiler="">
	<div class="ipsSpoiler_header">
		<span>Spoiler</span>
	</div>

	<div class="ipsSpoiler_contents">
		<p>
			Alivened are created when a Dark Oculator pushes part of their identity and their ability to connect with other people into an inanimate object. This warps it however, and just leaves the worst part of connection-the ability to hate others. Bad romance novels are more efficient because it already has some of this from when people felt emotional after reading it.
		</p>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Smedry Talents:
</p>

<div class="ipsSpoiler" data-ipsspoiler="">
	<div class="ipsSpoiler_header">
		<span>Spoiler</span>
	</div>

	<div class="ipsSpoiler_contents">
		<p>
			Smedry talents were created when people made people into lenses. This means that the focus for lenses was put innately into the body. But it was warped and diluted so that it comes out odd, and has side effects. That's really all I got.
		</p>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Brightsand/Silimatics:
</p>

<div class="ipsSpoiler" data-ipsspoiler="">
	<div class="ipsSpoiler_header">
		<span>Spoiler</span>
	</div>

	<div class="ipsSpoiler_contents">

			Brightsand is very Invested by default. So much so that it puts off this in the form of light. It will provide the fuel for the glass to perform it's action. Orientation glass does something similar to windrunning. Oculator Smedry's can fuel it because they have so MUCH innate investiture that it is parallel to brightsand. Unsure why brightsand wouldn't set off oculator's lenses with this.
		</p>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Ah, the joys of being a <s>nerd</s> Sanderfan. You think of things like this knowing that there are people who will agree with you and people who will disagree with you, but also come up with their own idea's.

<p>
	Nobody seems to be speculating (anywhere, even on the wiki) about the talents being, you know, <em>alive?</em>  Alkatraz even comments on it.
</p>

<p>
	…after seeing the Incarnate Wheel with a creature in the center reaching out to poke a spot in one corner during Kaz's teleportation trick.  It looks like only one thing is alive in there, so why the plural anyway?
</p>

<p>
	Wonder if we'll find out exactly how they got the talents in the first place, the nature of that creature, why only certain people have them, and if there were any obvious (and understood) ethical problems at the time.  Really it'd be nice to see the whole understanding of prior history, but that would require someone getting another translator's lens, another copy of the book Shasta burned (can't say she didn't have a good head on her shoulders for that, but that probably also makes her the one person who should have <em>read the damned thing</em> to make sure anything extremely important was grabbed first while also not revealing anything incredibly dangerous), and some way to keep idiots from deciding they can learn from past mistakes <em>by repeating them but not messing up this time</em> instead of by realizing some things are a really bad idea to begin with—which would violate suspension of disbelief far more than even Sanderson can fix.  Remember:  knowledge doesn't stay secret (notice one guy tried to make an entire language permanently-inaccessible and still failed).
</p>

<p>
	That and the amount of stuff that's still up in the air would require Sanderson to drop a Stormlight novel as #6, or do the annoying Mistborn thing and jump to an entire new setting and cast of characters (I would really prefer to not see a distant prequal going through Incarnate history, at least not before seeing a sequel where people other than the reader discover and draw conclusions about that history from records and reflections—it's more interesting to have to see the past first from the present trying to discover the past).
</p>

</div>

<p>
	All i all, I really enjoyed the book although I called the ending about who the traitor was (but not who it really was) and how Attica snuck into the Highbrary. The ending is a little ambiguous about what the ritual actually does and exactly how the mechanics of the whole smedry history came to be. But when carefully reread, it made more sense.
</p>

<p>
	But a question arises: What was the method to create the smedry line? Was it the ritual?
</p>

<p>
	The talent circle isn't further explained.
</p>

<p>
	We don't know what the dark talent actually was. Do we?

	Preface: I only just started reading book three, <em>Knights of Crystallia</em>. If my questions are answered further down the line, please just say RAFO. If they're not, please say so.
</p>

<p>
	We know that if someone marries a Smedry, they got their spouse's Talent. Like for example Shasta got Attica's Talent.
</p>

<p>
	But what if two Smedries marry? Do they get each own's Talents in addition to the ones they were born with?
</p>

<p>
	And what about polygamy? For example, if there would be two Smedries and a non-Smedry in the marriage, would the non-Smedry get both? One of them? Some combination of them?
</p>

<p>
	(I blame Quirk mechanisms from My Hero Academia for instilling these questions in my mind)

<p>
	I had this weird idea about creating a super glas weapon, but not sure how to make it viable. Mainly it is turning the power of the librarians against them, the alivened glass and blood forged lenses specificly.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	using the crystals involved in making those Crystin Knights, the mind stone, flesh stone and the sword and dagger. They are some how combined with alivened glass and blood forged lenses salvaged from battle. The knight crystals create a link to the whole order, while the alivened crystal carry the positive attributes of the librarians. We know the Knights can be gifted talents via the lenses, so could blood forged lenses combined in pseudo knight could allow the whole order access to the abilities, possibly simply channeled through their weapons instead of their lenses. I was thinking some kind of pit which these glass items are placed, as well as that sand used to power glass technology. The alivened glass would allow the knight crystals to link to the golem, allowing the blood forged lenses to be used.
</p>

<p>
	It seems to me the knight crystals only link to a living being. The alivened crystals are the only thing close to living crystal, and blood forged lenses were made from a living being. I dont see how they could form a viable being due to the differing parts, you would end up with a bunch of mismatched glass golem. We know some crystals grow, if these collection of crystals could somehow manipulate their own shapes, they could form a single being. I doubt the being would truly be independent, but potentially a sort of avatar of the order as a whole.
</p>

<p>
	in the future, occulators could willingly donate their remains to create new lenses, to further empower the Knights.

<p>
	I was listening to the Alcatraz audiobook, and I started brainstorming about how fun it would be to have an Alcatraz movie.
</p>

<p>
	Asides. Alcatraz has a lot of asides, especially in the beginnings of chapters. It would be fun to set these up like Kuzco's asides in <em>The Emperors New Groove</em>, only there would be more of them. It would also be cool to have random ones in the middle of a scene where Alcatraz has to explain something.
</p>

<p>
	What do you guys think? How would you like to see Alcatraz as a movie?

<p>
	I noticed a couple of things while reading Alcatraz vs. the Scriveners Bones that I don't understand. Tell me what you think.
</p>

<p>
	The first one is when Alcatraz is on top of <em>Dragonaught</em> and he says,
</p>

<p>
	"I twisted, looking to the cockpit, and saw Kaz concentrating, hand on the panel. Sweat beaded on his brow" (80)
</p>

<p>
	I don't think Alcatraz would be able to see Kaz's face unless he was directly on top of the cockpit, but the entire thing was transparent so maybe he could from another position.
</p>

<p>
	 The second one is after Alcatraz reads the inscription on the tomb of Alcatraz the first he thinks,
</p>

<p>
	"I wished that I had something I could write with, but then decided that it was better that I didn’t copy the text. The Curators would take what I wrote, and if they didn’t already know of the inscription, I didn’t want them to." (223)
</p>

<p>
	If he didn't care for the Curators of Alexandria to have that knowledge, then why did he put it in his book?
</p>

<p>
	I hope we can sort this out together if there is a reasonable answer, but I wonder if Alcatraz is still just trying to annoy us.
</p>

<p>
	After completing the series for a second time, I realized that even though Alcatraz ends his account after they leave the Highbrary, he dropped some hints that the story goes on. These include the fact that he wrote his autobiography, the fact that we know the world wasn't destroyed like Biblioden wanted because he wrote his autobiography, and a few other things he mentions about his life afterwards that I can't remember off the top of my head. Also, I know that Alcatraz suggests that one of the following happened (but most likely the first one): he and Bastille got married, Bastille married a Smedry, or Alcatraz married a Dartmoor (which is unlikely, since we only know of Bastille and her sister). I can't remember exactly what the wording is or where it was, but I am fairly sure it was in the third or fourth book if someone wants to check.
</p>

	What the title says. Time zones are a lie spread by the Librarians to help cover up their conspiracy. Jet lag is actually caused by the gasses released on airplanes to prevent anyone from noticing the extra continents or the extra flight time. The development of instant international communications would have posed a problem, except that the Librarians, having anticipated this, had created a way to communicate through time. So if you're in New York, talking with someone in LA, you're <em>actually</em> three hours ahead.

<div class="ipsSpoiler_contents"><p>Alcatraz's father said he knew the trick to not losing his soul was to not own it when he signs the contract, so he wrote down that he bequeathed his soul to his son. Alcatraz assumes that his dad asked for the book to explain how to get his soul back from the Curator's and this is where he learned this trick. But earlier in the book, Alcatraz learns that rule # 3 for the Curators is that they can reject or accept a request for a soul contract, but says they must hand over the book once the contract is signed. They cannot take the soul for a specified time, but according to this rule Alcatraz's father had to sign the contract before he saw the book, so he would not have been able to write that Alcatraz owned his soul before he signed it away to them. Did Alcatraz get the story wrong and his father knew this trick before he read a book? Otherwise, how could he give his son to Alcatraz before signing the contract since he did not receive the book explaining this technique until he had already signed it?   </p></div>

	I was watching the show Milo Murphy's Law, and I had a thought. The whole premise of the show is that, around Milo, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. While everything is affected in some way, I've noticed that the more high-tech something is, the more likely it is that it goes horribly wrong. Additionally, the point is made that the ability is hereditary. If these don't all indicate a Smedry Talent, I don't know what does.
</p>

<p>
	Thoughts? Additionally, can anyone think of other individuals in TV shows and movies that could count as Smedrys?

	During my first read of the Alcatraz series, specifically the first two books, I kept waiting for Alcatraz to make fun of me for thinking that the lead male would have to be romantically involved with the lead female. After all, this is a real story, not fiction. The real world does not always have a nice and convenient romantic subplot wrapped up in a bow. As the series progressed, and Alcastille began to solidify, the more I questioned. Would it not be just like Alcatraz to write a romantic subplot with no conclusion? He has never outright said that he and Bastille are romantically involved, yet he does strongly imply it. Yet the more he implies, the more suspicious I get. Is this just me!?

<p>
	I just recently finished the Dark Talent and wow was not what I was expecting.
</p>

<p>
	Anyway I’ve had this thought since book three that Alcatraz might not be able to become a popsicle, but he could look like one if he wished.
</p>

<p>
	In book one he has his famous popsicle speech and then in book 2 he is jealous that Australia can look like a popsicle for a short time in the mornings.  In book 4 he mentions that just hoping doesn’t get you anything, otherwise he would be a popsicle (see book 1).
</p>

<p>
	Anyway, while reading book 3 he had the perfect opportunity to bring up the popsicle and he didn’t.  I’m so disappointed in him.  When he was given the disguiser lenses, I was fully expecting to ask if he would turn into a popsicle, but no he asks about a boring rock.
</p>

<p>
	Despite that he didn’t say anything I assume that he uses the lenses to look like a popsicle (with glasses).
</p>

<p>
	So here are some of the things that made me think of this theory:
</p>

<p>
	I think it said somewhere Smedry siblings have similar talents.
</p>

<p>
	In the case of Attica and Kazan, one talent teleports things, the other talent teleports you.
</p>

<p>
	Firebringer's lenses shoot out fire, while the glass they use for torches sets itself on fire.
</p>

<p>
	Then there's Shatterer's lenses that break glass, and Restoring glass which breaks and restores itself, perhaps 'forgetting' it was broken.
</p>

<p>
	So, I think that the Breaking talent and forgetting talent are related, and that someone with the forgetting talent can forget things like injuries and maybe aging.
</p>

<p>
	Any thoughts?
</p>

<p>
	One of the first books by Brandon Sanderson that I read years ago was <u>Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians.</u> While rereading it recently, I found a number of references to other Sanderson books.
</p>

<p>
	1. The Sentinel's Glass of Ryshadium, chapter 16. Keep in mind that Brandon Sanderson published this book in 2007, while <u>The Way of Kings</u>  was published in 2010, so he probably thought, "Hey, that sounds like a cool name for cool horses".
</p>

<p>
	2. Wasing not of wasing is, also chapter 16. Reference to Spook's dialect in <u>Mistborn: The Final Empire,</u> published 2006
</p>

<p>
	3. The steel skull of your archnemesis. chapter 18. Reference to <u>Steelheart,</u> published 2013.
</p>

<p>
	Even though the Alcatraz series is written for younger readers, I still enjoy the style of writing. Finding those references unexpectedly was fun as well.
</p>

<p>
	Did you find any other references? Do you think that these are valid, or am I just making connections that aren't there?

	So, my youngest is developed the Sanderfan gene that his mother, father and two elder siblings already have! But, he's a lot younger than my others were when they got into Mistborn so he's not ready for that or Reckoners yet (he's 8!) But, he was really interested in reading the Alcatraz books which are the one set of Sanderson books that we don't have. Great, thought I, Christmas books sorted ... except, none of the UK booksellers that I've checked stock them anymore (and they aren't available to order) whilst they are hugely, hugely expensive from the main online sellers (and it's not even clear that they're new!). We want actual paper copies rather than e-books.
</p>

<p>
	Anyone know if there's a reason why these books have become a bit of a rarity in the UK?

	I got all the Alcatraz books from the New York Public Library. I saw something about a map in one of the books, but I couldn't find it. Then I saw on the back cover of book 3, "Inside the Jacket: The Map the Evil Librarians Librarians Don't Want You to See." I tried taking off the dust jacket, but it was covered with an extra plastic jacket which made it hard to get off. Eventually, I got the jacket off, but I couldn't see the whole map because the flaps were attached on the ends.
</p>

<p>
	This plastic jacket (which I assume was put there by the by the librarians, rather than the publisher) is further proof that the librarians don't want us to see the map.

<p>
	The biggest thing it shared with Alcatraz was the evil librarians. Unfortunately, I didn't have a Talent. The dream started out with me, my cousin, and my brother separated from our relatives. I don't remember how. The three of us performed an epic infiltration of a library, most of which I have forgotten. My cousin and brother were captured; however, I managed to escape. After that I went to a store, where I bought a few items that I don't remember and a bike without handlebars or a front wheel. For whatever reason, I didn't notice the bike was dysfunctional until after I had left the store. I dumped it outside. After that I went to infiltrate another library, which had a tiny store at the front of the building. I bought a rope there, a rope being the last thing I needed for one scheme(the unknown items from the first store contributed to the scheme as well). I have no idea what the scheme was, but I think it was what allowed me to infiltrate the library in the first place. I eventually reached a richly dressed room. There was a girl with a key(I think I found her in the room, but I can't be sure) to a vault which was in the room. Apparently inside the vault was some sort of refuge for members of the royal line(of which she was one of the last). She opened the vault and we went inside. I don't remember anything else up until a point where the girl had been captured by a rich-looking man with black hair, who may or may not have been her father or uncle. At some time after that, the man with black hair entered the vault. After that I had to find the key again. I also remember a Lego Star Wars III sequence where me and my brother played as clone troopers in the inside-the-vault environment, I'm not sure if that was when the man entered the vault or after I found the key and entered it.
</p>

<p>
	So the notable influences in this dream:
</p>

<p>
	-Alcatraz
</p>

<p>
	-Narnia
</p>

<p>I saw a topic like this on The Stormlight Archives forum and thought, "Hey! We should do this for Alcatraz, because even though Stormlight is Brandon's best work, Alcatraz is the funniest! Think how many people would wet their pants and spit all over them self from laughing!" (As you can tell I'm not a very nice person. I think I'll be a novelist someday)</p>
<p>ANYWAY, please comment below with your favorite funny scenes from Alcatraz! I'll try not to take them all, so I'm restricting myself to only 5 *sigh* it's so hard to be me.</p>
<p>1. This reference:</p>
<p>"I think I'll go for a walk. . . ." Grandpa Smedry said cheerfully.</p>
<p>"Wasing not of wasing is," Quentin added.</p>
<p>2. New words! Someone! Quick! Add it to the dictionary!</p>
<p>Definition of "crapaflapnasti": "Adj. Used to describe an item that is as disgusting as fish sticks." (Note: This word can only be used to describe fish sticks themselves, as nothing had yet been found that is equally crapaflapnasti. Though the unclean, moldy, cluttered space under Brandon Sanderson's bed comes close.</p>
<p>3. In which we learn how awesomish and manlyish Alcatraz is.</p>
<p>I glanced to the side, then jumped as I saw an enormous reptile crawling along the sides of the buildings towards us. Like a spider crawling along the front of a fence.</p>
<p>"Dragon!" I yelled, pointing.</p>
<p>"Brilliant observation, Smedry," Bastille noted from beside me.</p>
<p>I was too alarmed to make an amazing comeback. Fortunately, I'm the author of this book, so I can re-write history as I feel necessary. Let's try that again.</p>
<p>Ahem.</p>
<p>I glanced to the side, whereupon I noticed a dangerous scaly lizard slithering its way along the sides of the buildings, obviously bent on devouring us all.</p>
<p>"Behold!" I bellowed. "'Tis a foul beast of the nether-held. Stand behind me and I shall slay it!"</p>
<p>"Oh Alcatraz," Bastille breathed. "Thou art awesomish and manlyish."</p>
<p>"Lo, let it be such, I said.</p>
<p>4. Violence is not the best solution to problems.</p>
<p>For instance, the next time you get attacked by a group of angry ninjas, one solution would be to kick the lead ninja, steal his katana, and proceed to slay the rest of the group in an awesome display of authorial fury. While this might be fulfilling--and a little bit fun--it would also be rather messy, and would earn you the ire of an entire ninja clan. They'd send assassins after you for the rest of your life. (Having to fight off a ninja in the middle of a date can be quite embarrassing.) </p>
<p>So instead of fighting, you could bribe the ninjas with some soy sauce, and then send them to attack your younger siblings instead. That way you can get rid of some unwanted soy sauce. See how easy it is to avoid violence?</p>
<p>5. (After telling you to act out this book)</p>
<p>We burst out of the room into a hallway, where I hopped up and down on one foot three times, then punched myself (softly) in the forehead. After that we flapped our arms like chickens. Then we twirled around, smacking our brother if he happened to be near. Then we stuck our feet in our mouths before dumping pudding on our heads while singing "Hambo the Great" in Dutch.</p>
<p>There is NO MORE NUDITY. You can proceed with acting out the rest of this chapter if you want.</p>
<p>I stood on my head while singing "The Star Spangled Banner" and juggling live trout with my feet.</p>
<p>Oh, wait. I hope you weren't wearing only a Mokian wrap like me. Sorry about that.</p>
<p>Again, please comment below with your favorite funny Alcatraz scenes! Thank you!</p>

	This has most likely been asked, but I cannot find it. In the fifteenth chapter, Alcatraz talks about doing something with the first fourteen chapters? I can’t figure it out for the life of me. Can someone answer my question or direct me to the appropriate thread?

<p>
	MBTI is a system of personality types.
</p>

<p>
	There are 8 cognitive functions:
</p>

<p>
	Thinking functions
</p>

<p>
	Ti: People with Ti, or introverted thinking, analyze the irremoveble components of how an object functions.
</p>

<p>
	Te: People with extroverted thinking (Te) are fact- oriented and efficient.
</p>

<p>
	Feeling functions
</p>

<p>
	Fi: People with introverted feeling (Fi) are individualistic and want to be themselves. They are also very moral.
</p>

<p>
	Fe: People with extroverted feeling (Fe) are compassionate and focused on social norms a lot. They aren't as focused on being authentic.
</p>

<p>
	Intuitive functions
</p>

<p>
	Ni: People with introverted intuition (Ni) are strategic planners and have epiphanies and intuition about people, science, situations, etc...
</p>

<p>
	Ne: People with extroverted intuition (Ne) are focused on possibilities and are very creative.
</p>

<p>
	Sensing functions
</p>

<p>
	Si: People with introverted sensing (Si) have detailed memories and focus on the past.
</p>

<p>
	Se: People with extroverted sensing (Se) are good at getting in synch with their environment and people around them. A lot of people with Se are athletic.
</p>

<p>
	Everyone has four functions: A thinking function, a feeling function, a sensing function, and an intuitive function. The order they're placed in depends on how well developed they are and how frequently they're used.
</p>

<p>
	For example, an INTP is Ti dominant, Ne is their auxiliary function, Si is their tertiary, and Fe is their inferior function. So they are good at understanding how things work, they are creative, they have good memories and are somewhat past oriented, but not as focused on it as someone with auxiliary or dominant Si, and they're usually not as good with social norms.
</p>

<p>
	The letters are determined like this:
</p>

<p>
	I is for introvert. Someone with a dominant introverted function is an introvert. That's because the function is internally focused. (Fi, Ti, Si, or Ni.)
</p>

<p>
	E is for extrovert, someone with a dominant extroverted function. (Fe, Te, Se, or Ne.)
</p>

<p>
	N is for Intuition. Someone with Ni or Ne as their dominant or auxiliary function.
</p>

<p>
	S is for sensor. Someone with an auxiliary or dominant sensing function. Si or Se.
</p>

<p>
	T is for Thinker. Someone with a dominant or auxiliary thinking function. Ti or Te.
</p>

<p>
	F is for Feeler. Someone with a dominant or auxiliary feeling function. Fi or Fe.
</p>

<p>
	P is for Perceiver. Someone with a perceiving function as their auxiliary. Which is an intuitive or sensing function. (Si, Se, Ni, or Ne.)
</p>

<p>
	J is for Judger. Someone with an auxiliary judging function. Which is a feeling or thinking function. (Fi, Fe, Ti, or Te.)
</p>

<p>
	There are sixteen types: INTP (Ti Ne Si Fe), INTJ (Ni Te Fi Se), INFP (Fi Ne Si Te), INFJ (Ni Fe Ti Se), ISTP (Ti Se Ni Fe), ISTJ (Si Te Fi Ne), ISFP (Fi Se Ni Te), ISFJ (Si Fe Ti Ne), ENTP (Ne Ti Fe Si), ENTJ (Te Ni Se Fi), ENFP (Ne Fi Te Si), ENFJ (Fe Ni Se Ti), ESTP (Se Ti Fe Ni), ESTJ (Te Si Ne Fi), ESFP (Se Fi Te Ni), and ESFJ (Fe Si Ne Ti).
</p>

<p>
	SPs, Sensing perceivers (Sensors who are also perceivers) live in the moment and are impulsive.
</p>

<p>
	SJs, Sensors who are also judgers, are very stable and are focused on the past.
</p>

<p>
	NTs, Intuitives who are also thinkers, are very intellectual and make decisions based on logic.
</p>

<p>
	NFs, Intuitives who are also feelers, make decisions based on emotions, are compassionate, and are often intellectual.
</p>

<p>
	I want to type the characters in the Alcatraz books based on this system.
</p>

<p>
	Here's my opinion:
</p>

<p>
	Alcatraz: INFP (Fi Ne Si Te)
</p>

<p>
	He is unique and different. He is also clever and good at solving problems, which is him using Ne to creatively problem solve.
</p>

<p>
	Grandpa Smedry: ENFP (Ne Fi Te Si)
</p>

<p>
	He is nice to everyone and he is moral. So I think he's an ENFP. In the Knights of crystallia he gets upset because Alcatraz's friends don't really like him. That's introverted feeling.
</p>

<p>
	Attica: INTP (Ti Ne Si Fe)
</p>

<p>
	He is a scientist who is well liked and he enjoys attention from people. This is Fe. He wants people to like him. He also doesn't know what to do with Alcatraz, which means he doesn't really know how to be a parent. I think this is inferior Fe. And he just isn't used to him.
</p>

<p>
	Kazan: ENFP (Ne Fi Te Si)
</p>

<p>
	Kazan is creative and funny. He has a list of reasons why short people are better than tall people, which is Ne. He is also very genuine and in the Scrivener's Bones, he tells Alcatraz to look past people's differences and judge them for who they are, which means he has Fi.
</p>

<p>
	Sing: ISFJ (Si Fe Ti Ne)
</p>

<p>
	Sing cares a lot about the people of Mokia. He is traditional and he wants to save his people from the Librarians. I think that means Sing is an extroverted feeler (Fe) and an introveted sensor (Si).
</p>

<p>
	Folsom: ENFP (Ne Fi Te Si)
</p>

<p>
	Folsom is creative and he likes to be a critic. I think he is a feeler because he cares a lot about Himalaya. He is also Te because he is using it to criticize people.
</p>

<p>
	Himalaya: INFP (Fi Ne Si Te)
</p>

<p>
	Himalaya is moral and joined the Free Kingdoms after she found out Librarians were evil. She is also kind to Alcatraz. And she is intelligent, which INFPs tend to be.
</p>

<p>
	Quentin: INFP (Fi Ne Si Te)
</p>

<p>
	Quentin is moral and he is intelligent. I think he is an introverted feeler. (Fi).
</p>

<p>
	Bastille: ISFP (Fi Se Ni Te)
</p>

<p>
	She is moral (Fi) and she's a good fighter and one of the youngest knights (Se).
</p>

<p>
	Australia: INFP (Fi Ne Si Te)
</p>

<p>
	Australia is moral and she is kind (Fi).
</p>

<p>
	Aydee: ENFP (Ne Fi Te Si)
</p>

<p>
	She is kind and talkative, which makes me think she's an ENFP.
</p>

<p>
	Pattywagon: ESFP (Se Fi Te Ni)
</p>

<p>
	She is outgoing and cares about people. I think she's an introverted feeler.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

	Well, here we go again.
</p>

<p>
	Wyatt Oleff as Alcatraz Smedry(he's pretty young, and he can pull off the attitude needed.)
</p>

<p>
	Christopher Lloyd as Leavenworth Smedry (okay, honestly, he is PERFECT. The first time I read the book, Grandpa appeared and in my mind, I immediately thought, <em>Christopher Lloyd.</em>)
</p>

<p>
	Mackenzie Foy as Bastille (kind of weird, but it fits. Kind of.)
</p>

<p>
	Natalie Portman as Shasta Smedry (It works)
</p>

<p>
	Paul McGann as Radrian Blackburn (YES!! YES!! YES!!)
</p>

<p>
	Matt Damon as Attica Smedry
</p>

<p>
	Richard Dean Anderson as Dif/(I forgot the villain name)
</p>

<p>
	Cate Blanchett as Draulin
</p>

<p>
	Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Sing Sing Smedry
</p>

<p>
	Auli'i Cravalho as Australia Smedry
</p>

<p>
	Peter Dinklage as Kazan Smedry(Who else??)
</p>

<p>
	Brenton Thwaites as Folsom Smedry
</p>

	I was thrilled that we finally got a map of the whole world, but I have a couple questions.
</p>

<p>
	Where is Crystallia supposed to be? I assumed it was near Nalhalla,but it's not on the map.
</p>

<p>
	Is it just a coincidence that Nalhalla has the same shape as France? And was I the only one to assume it was in the Atlantic?
</p>

<p>
	Finally, no Free Kingdoms in the Indian Ocean? Just a Bottomless Pit?

	<span style="color:#272a34;">So really, has anyone noticed the different references are made in Alcatraz. I just finished listening to the first one, and noticed a few different comments that Sanderson made that had to be references to other literary works, and not just his own works, but I am sure there is a reference to the Count of Monte Cristo when they are thrown in jail. Anyone else notice these? I'm pretty sure he is referencing partially to either Harry Potter or books like that at the end where the kids always go back to where it would be easy to find them</span>

<p>
	So I just finished reading it and I have a couple of questions. If the answers are in the next books, please say so and don't give the answer itself.
</p>

<p>
	Why Bastille and Draulin don't wear Warrior's Lenses? IIRC they were used only once when Kaz needed to run faster. But Bastille has used them in the first book just fine, why isn't she doing it now?
</p>

<p>
	Why isn't Kaz an oculator? I got the impression that while every Smedry has a Talent, only those of the main bloodline can be oculators. But if Alcatraz is from the main bloodline, so should Kaz, right?
</p>

<p>
	Also, if you can get Smedry Talent by marriage, why aren't Smedrys polygamous? I'd expect them to enter into purely formal marriages with the Crystin that are assigned to protect them, especially those with useful Talents (totally not thinking of it because of the Ship Tease indicated when Alcatraz got distracted by Bastille while trying to fly out of the pit trap. Totally &gt;.&gt;).

	Okay, so after reading the letter at the end of the book we know that Grandpa Smedry survived by reaching out for his talent.  That was a bit surprising, since we have never seen his talent operate in quite that manner; however, there is a talent that seems very likely to bring someone back from the dead, and that is Attica's talent.  He has a talent for losing things <em>and then finding them again later when he needs them</em>!  He lost his soul and Alcatraz got it back.  Now he lost his life, the only question is, how and when will he get it back?

	The whole time. The whole dang time. The entire time he was writing the series, Brandon knew that there would be a sixth book about how Alcatraz wasn't awful for doing the Terrible Thing. I was in middle school when I read book four. I'm in college now. I dreamed for years about reading book 5, about knowing how it all ended. Brandon waited four years, not knowing if he'd ever get the chance to pull the greatest literary gotcha I've ever had done to me. My view of the series, held the same for so long, changed instantly. Wowza.

	I just recently read the new editions of Alcatraz on my Kindle, and I SWEAR Brandon's changed stuff between the versions (though I don't have my old copy with me).

<p>
	I saw in another thread about the line "The steel skull of your archnemesis" being added, but I'm wondering, are there any other differences?

<p>
	All throughout the Alcatraz series we are told not to flip to the last page.
</p>

<p>
	The Letter is the reason why.
</p>

<p>
	(I <em>just</em> realized this. Brandon must have planned The Letter ever since the first novel. That tricksy librarian scum. <img alt=":P" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="https://uploads.17thshard.com/emoticons/default_tongue.png" srcset="https://uploads.17thshard.com/emoticons/tongue@2x.png 2x" title=":P" width="20" />)

<p>
	Sigh. being not a native speaker have its downfall, especially when you are reading a book full of pun.
</p>

<p>
	Hopefully you guys can shed some light on those hard to catch one.
</p>

<p>
	First Q. Smedry buster 2300? That has to come from somewhere.. where?
</p>

<p>
	Stat means right away... but does that threat regarding tongue have any merit?
</p>

<p>
	I believe there are way, way more. just those I can think of right now.

<p>
	So how do you guys think book six is going to go down? Is it going to be the last book even? State of Sanderson please!
</p>

<p>
	I got basically nothing on this count... Go to worldspire and beat up Biblioden, obviously. I was more wondering about the new structure from a new POV. I seriously got nothing.

<p>
	Is this Alcatraz book the last one? Because in the end, we get a letter from Bastille that (and I quote) "I declare that I will write the real final volume. This story won't end until I say so."
</p>

<p>
	What exactly does this mean? Is there going to be a sixth? Was it just Brandon being funny with us? Does anybody know?
</p>
