"Ah. Well, I'm sure we'll be informed of what's going on soon enough." Maverick stood awkwardly. He'd never been good at conversing.

"Oh - Do you need to go?"

"Oh, no, no. I'm sorry, Lady Eleanor, I've never been very adept at small talk."

"Good. I don't know that I could work up the courage to go talk to someone else." Aliénor smiled.

Mav smiled back. "So, what kinds of things do you like, Highness?"

Is she being sarcastic? It seems really sarcastic...

"Well, history, for one. But reading mystery novels" - he gestured to his book - "and gardening are what I tend to do in my free time."

No. She's not sarcastic.

"Mystery novels? Found any good ones?"

"Yes. The one I'm reading actually managed to throw me for a loop."

"Geists in the Shadows," said Mav. "Has to do with the the legend of the Witherlord. Ever heard about that?"

Mav chuckled. "It's essentially a spin on a classic fairytale. One of my favorite fairytales as a kid."

"Well," Maverick began. "Legend has it that centuries - no, millennia - ago, a dark creature of chaos called the Witherlord was imprisoned. He longs to be released and causes calamities to happen with his servants the withergeists. The story has been around for quite a while, so it's been changed bit by bit, but historians believe that it does have its roots in some forgotten truth."

"I'm sure you could find any number of stories on Witherlore if you look into it. 'Geists actually make their way into lots of literature; if you have an eye to notice it, you'll see them alluded to rather often."

Arabella backed away. "I snuck in alone. I figured I could get some easy money and sneak out when I accidentally caused a scene."

Caden growled, "a child snuck into the King's own ball alone to steal some money? Do you take me for a fool!" Caden stalked up to the child, towering over her. "You are here, working for someone, WHO?!"

"I'm afraid that's quite impossible. Would you mind coming out here so that we might talk further?"

The guards nodded to each other, readying their weapons. "Sir, if you refuse to adhere to the lockdown you'll be committing treason. I'll only give you one more chance, stand down."

"Yeah." Maverick looked about, feeling uncomfortable. He had no idea what to say. And it wasn't just that - this lockdown was beginning to unnerve him and he was frightened that talking to the King's betrothed could land him in trouble somehow.

"Um... is there anything else you've enjoyed? In terms of books?"

"I cannot. I suppose you're going to settle this by way of trial by combat? So be it." Jasper takes a deep breath, steps back from the door, and settles into a defensive stance.

Mav shrugged. "I usually don't remember book titles. It's just kind of a mindless thing to do. That and gardening."
