The Kaladin Cut

5 posts in this topic

I have re-read the Stormlight books multiple times at this point:

  • TWoK - 5
  • WoR - 4
  • Oathbringer - 3
  • RoW - 1

I never want to leave them because there is always something more I can find out, or just purely enjoying the books themselves.

Has anyone ever talked about, or even thought about a different way to re-read them?

I was thinking the other night of taking all the scenes for one character and making a cut of the books focused solely on them. (including scenes where the might not be the POV but are still in the scene.

There could be a Kaladin Cut, a Dalinar Cut, even a Shallan Cut for those who would enjoy that.

Just as a different way to re-read and see things in a slightly different perspective.

Might be a terrible idea as you would lose a lot of what makes the books great from experience the whole world from multiple people.

I know a lot of people who do things like that, and I think it’s a great idea for a re-read. Keeps things very continuous, might notice things you wouldn’t otherwise.

However, some of the people I know did something like this on their FIRST read through. And that’s definitely a bad idea.

You mean, so it would be like a regular book. Not like a Sanderson book woh 27 characters and three worldhoppers and three arch’s in each book. Yeah, I’d like that.

I have considered doing this, and have actually started doing it with Taravangian specifically. I wanted to understand him on a spiritual level for... reasons.

I would LOVE this, for research purposes.  Having only physical copies of the novels means it's often a ridiculous chore for me to find a particular scene or passage.  For example, recently it occurred to me that someone said something to Dalinar at some point that I didn't understand at the time, but now might have better context.  It's somewhere in Words of Radiance or Oathbringer.  Well, that's only 2500 pages of text to look through, right?  Unfortunately, I seem unable to "skim" Sanderson.  Five hours later, I've re-read 43 chapters (and missed an appointment) but still have not found the conversation I was after.  Having access to a "Dalinar cut" would make this much more possible.  I also agree with @Dannex that it's NOT a good way for first-timers to read the series.
