Ulim's oddities

Why does Ulim manifest as human? How does Nale know him, seemingly quite well, and why is Ulim very socially awkward around Nale?

The implications seem to be that Ulim was an Ashynite, but...if so, how is he a spren?

Ulim's speech mannerisms also very oddly anachronistic to me: it feels like contemporary Earth speech, in a way that no other characters' speech evokes. That feeling seems deliberate in the writing by Brandon, and not an accident.

Makes me wonder what the heck is going on.

Ulim manifests as human in the same way that Syl (or many other spren) manifests as human. It doesn't make her any more human than it makes him. I do think you might be onto something with his speech mannerisms, though. He does have a way of speaking that seems odd to me, and it did stand out when I was reading.

Spren are formed according to expectations of sapient beings on Roshar. The easiest explasnation is that Ulim was among the first spren generated as Ashynite refugees aeeived. Hence culturally he is Ashunite.
